For Teresa and Bob “Sully” Sullivan, the office wasn’t a paper company in LIFE AND Scranton, Pennsylvania, but a real estate agency in Newport News, Virginia where they had WORK been casual co-workers. “She was just another agent in the office,” says Sully. At the time, Sully, a former Air Force Officer and a divorced dad raising a high school aged son, had been selling real estate for about five years. His older daughter had recently moved to Illinois. Teresa, who had previously owned a Hallmark Store, had been in the business for about eight years. But, in 1999, Teresa’s long-time husband passed away, leaving her to support and raise two daughters, one in college and one in high school, on her own. Now 19 married years later, Teresa and Sully credit the office, a high school football rivalry and a Walt Disney movie for not only their marriage, but also their success as a top team of award winning REALTORS®. Often, if the two saw each other in the office, they would banter about the football rivalry between Poquoson High School, where Teresa’s daughter, Leigh, was enrolled and Grafton High School, where Sully’s son, Greg, attended and played football.
One night, they casually met at a game. They had such a great time that they met at another game. That led to a dinner date at County Grille and a video, “Darby O’Gill and the Little People,” that Sully picked up at Blockbusters. The 1959 movie about an Irishman, played by Sean Connery, “in a battle of wits with some leprechauns” was one of Sully’s favorites. Teresa, he discovered, owned a copy herself. “We both loved it,’ laughs Teresa. Two months and nine days later, they flew their four kids to Las Vegas and tied the knot in a chapel chosen by Sully’s parents who lived in the area. “My parents met Teresa for the first time at the chapel,” says Sully who admits they thought he had lost his mind. Teresa and Sully both knew, however, that, while the office, football and a movie may have been the means, God was the way. Their relationship was, as Teresa puts it, “a God thing.” And Sully agrees. “This is the person that God put in my life.” While combining two households and four kids was a “difficult transition,” it was accomplished through teamwork. Recently, the kids who are now in their 30’s gathered at Greg’s wedding in California. “It was nice to see them all hanging out and having fun as adults,” says Sully. After joining lives and combining families, the couple, who had both been award winning agents on their own prior to marriage, decided to merge their businesses as well. Now the couple’s clients get a twofer--two highly knowledgeable and competent REALTORS® for the price of one team with over 50 years of combined experience in every conceivable market. “We both bring different strengths to the table,” says Sully. “Sometimes one of us will see something different from the other. We’ll talk it through and it always works out best for the client. I honestly don’t think there is a better team on the peninsula.” To point, in November, the Sullivans were awarded the 2018 Sales Team of the Year by the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors (VPAR), the second time they have been awarded this honor. In addition to their breath of knowledge and experience, what really makes them successful is their attention to detail, their system processes, their quick response times and accessibility to clients. Sunday, however, is sacred. “We turn off our phones on Saturday night because Sunday is our time off,” says Teresa who is a deacon in their church. It’s time off to be grateful for four kids, three grandkids, a poodle named “Miss Ellie,” good careers and a strong relationship that began in the most humble of places, the office.
