Rainmaker Spotlight: Heather Grimsley “I discovered Born in Lanexa, Realtor Heather Grimsley and her twin brother, Buddy, were raised by that I enjoyed their mother, Renee. Their mother supported them as a registered nurse who cared for the elderly as well as cleaned houses. While her mother provided a loving home, things could negotiating, get tight. and I am “We didn’t have a lot, “ says Heather. In fact, Christmas gifts were often provided by the local Toys for Tots and their church. good at doing Renee raised her children to be independent and strong, so Heather and her brother began property working at an early age. Heather would lifeguard in the summers as well as help at her aunt’s research” daycare in Gloucester. “That’s how, as a realtor, I know the Gloucester area,” says Heather. “I know all about rural areas because I grew up in them including New Kent. I also know the more urban Williamsburg because I went to school there and worked there.” Always a good student, Heather graduated from Lafayette High School early, worked full- time for Polo Ralph Lauren and attend community college, taking TeleTechnet classes through Old Dominion University. In her 11 years at Polo Ralph Lauren, Heather became an assistant manager, overseeing over 11 million in sales a year for the store, while also working in human resources, merchandising, marketing and operations. She covered new store openings all along the east coast and was often away for a week at a time. When Heather decided to start a family, she knew a career change was in order.

“I couldn’t have a family while traveling and working the hours I was working,” says Heather. Real estate seemed to be the answer. At 18, Heather, her brother and other family members inherited a piece of property. When Heather and Buddy decided to sell their portion back to the family, Heather went to the courthouse, pulled county records and researched the property’s value. “I discovered that I enjoyed negotiating, and I am good at doing property research,” says Heather. Despite leaving a salaried job with benefits for a commission-only real estate career in a down market, Heather made the move anyway. Great company training, resources and her experience in sales and customer service allowed Heather to excel. She’s been selling fast and furious ever since. Three years in, Heather earned her broker’s license. Ten years later, she has achieved her Certified Residential Specialist, maintaining over $1 million in sales per year for the last decade with at least 40 transactions. This year, she completed her Graduate Realtor Institute designation. In 2012, Heather welcomed her first child, Hanna and in 2019 her son John IV was born. Raised in the church, Heather wanted the same for her daughter and son. Her best friend from high school, Melissa Croft, introduced her to a church that has made her faith stronger. It has also caused Heather to marvel at the long lasting relationships that God has created in her path through life. “I would not be where I am today without God,” explains Heather. Another of those relationships is with John Grimsley. What began as a friendship through their shared love of hiking, skiing and snowboarding has grown into a lasting relationship and marriage. John also taught Heather how to disc golf which they do often. They now share their love of those activities with Hanna and John IV. In John’s family, Heather has found additional support and love. “They are one of the most caring families I have encountered,” says Heather who feels blessed to spend time with them. In addition to family reunions with John’s family, Heather and her family also make time to visit extended family in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Faith and family have allowed Heather to focus on her passions and her real estate career. In return, her career allows her to be more involved in the local community as well as focus on giving back to charities like Toys for Tots and CHKD. Real estate also allows her to continue to build relationships. In fact, when Heather meets her clients for the first time, she often explains that they are going to spend lots of time together. “I tell them we are going to become friends and family,” says Heather. “It’s very true.”
