Rainmaker Spotlight: Andrea Pokorny “I’m blessed. Andrea Pokorny takes business calls even while she’s soaking up sun and enjoying I don’t know some treasured family time. “I love what I do, and when I’m on vacation, I’m still what I did to working,” she says. “I started out in the real estate business because, early on, it was be so lucky, but something that gave me what I needed as the mom of two children, to be there for I’m taking it!” my kids when they were young and dependent.” That kind of flexibility proved true at first, but at one point, Andrea remembers, she had to reassess. “Things had gotten so busy that it began to interfere with my personal life. My husband, Clay, was traveling a lot at the time, so I prioritized and pulled back a bit.” Now her daughter, Carson, is a pre-med scholar and soccer player at Christopher Newport University. Carson has won an early acceptance to Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she will attend after graduating in 2020. Son Cole, an outdoorsman, initially tried charter fishing as a career, but transitioned to commercial construction after deciding that fishing should be for fun and not business. At this stage of life, Andrea’s free to pursue real estate in the wholehearted way that comes naturally to her.

“I’ve always been a very high-energy person. I couldn’t possibly sit behind a desk all day; I have to be out and about, meeting people and doing things,” she says. Andrea’s gregarious personality makes her easy to talk to. “Clay’s company moved us here from our native Long Island, New York right after we got married in 1992. I’d lived in the same place all my life and was afraid it might be hard to find new friends. Turns out I’m that person who picks up strangers in the grocery store!” She soon established herself through joining different clubs, eventually connecting with a wide group of young parents when babies came along, people who have remained lifelong friends. As the children grew and went to school, Andrea worked in the medical equipment field, but wasn’t passionate about it. The agent who sold them a home was grateful for Andrea’s subsequent numerous referrals and suggested she might be happier selling real estate herself. “I started out in a small Mom and Pop office with just five agents, a great place to learn the ropes. I always said if I left, I’d go with Liz Moore. You want to do your best for the person who believes in you,” she says. “It’s important to know that if a deal gets shaky, Liz answers a call from her agent, even in the middle of the night.” Andrea finds the real estate business to be challenging and fun. “You wear a lot of hats as a Realtor,” she says. “Things can get crazy at times, and part of the job is to remain confident and calm, acting as a counselor, financial advisor, agent and friend.” It’s easy to get burned out when life is all work and no play, and Andrea tries to maintain a good balance. As residents of Ford’s Colony, Andrea and Clay play golf. “I’m not competitive; I just want to have fun!” she admits. “I think you can be a competitive person in business in the sense that you want to do well, but you can still be compassionate. I’m always happy to hear of others’ successes because I don’t feel diminished by them.” However, Andrea shows no mercy when playing cards at the family’s weekend getaway cottage on the water in Lanexa. “We play canasta, and I have to say that the women have been beating the men badly lately. Any day we can put our dogs, Darcy and Milo, in the boat and drive around the Chickahominy River, and then sit around the table, eating, laughing, and playing cards… to us, that’s fun!” It sounds like a heavenly way to spend a weekend, but even in the midst of all the fun and relaxation, if the phone rings, Andrea Pokorny picks up. You never know what’s next in the real estate business, and she doesn’t want to miss a thing. “I’m blessed. I don’t know what I did to be so lucky, but I’m taking it!” Andrea says with a smile.
