A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dear all, Namaskar. Dr Nalini Pati President, Orioz Inc. It gives me an immense pleasure to write for this exciting first edition of “Dwaipayana”, which will be published every three months. At the outset, let me thank the entire team of “Dwaipayana”, particularly Satya Dash, Amit Mishra, the comms team, reviewers for putting their time and effort to make it possible. It has been a well thought out format to help achieve better readability which would be user friendly and surely will help better community engagement. In turn will have some impact on our readers both here and overseas that the Odia language, culture and values are maintained here in our adopted land! Ongoing reshaping and strengthening of this newsletter “Dwaipayana”, is only possible with all your contribution, constructive feedback and cooperation. Also, I am very hopeful that with all your keen interest and help, the publication of Dwaipayana will continue. As we know, we are in an extremely difficult unprecedented time during this COVID 19 pandemic with all the lockdown etc. As we recover here, we are extremely terrified all the time with the situation in Odisha, that there is no one affected or if affected recover completely. But it has taught us one thing- what is important in life, how to prioritise things in life? At the same time we have started doing things differently and perhaps in a better way, so that we feel closer, yet more global. “Dwaipayana” certainly will connect us even more, achieving that simple goal. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 1

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT As we grow, our needs change, so also the community dynamics. Together, we all in this united, progressive community can achieve things for our own benefit, upholding the Orioz Charter. However, we need to remind every time, leaving behind our own motherland, adopting this second land, we need to integrate more with this extended family, ignoring the minor differences if at all. We need to maintain a happy environment in the community, and then this will happen. Then we can dream big and try to make Orioz more \"Global\", work on some projects in Odisha, so we contribute from here as a group. And off course, continue to promote Odia values, language, culture here in Oz land, particularly amongst the younger generation. We need to be known ourselves further in this country and worldwide that, we are a strong, dynamic community and we do contribute to wider causes in the society. Publication of newsletters, in a way as we know is an attempt to keep community engaged which will help bringing the community together in various ways while focussing on language and arts. Hope you enjoy reading this edition and continue to contribute to the future editions and provide your valuable ideas for further improvement. Importantly, we are part of a big family and try to help each other and spread the love and peace across. And make this Orioz a happy place for everyone. Love you all. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 2

State NEWS QUEENSLAND Challenger Cup Cricket Orioz Queensland seemed to have overcome the boredom of the COVID restrictions and followed up their recently held successful badminton challenger cup with a spectacular Challenger Cup Cricket on 14th August. There was no better fit to the names of the challenging teams, Odisha Ratnas and Utkal Gauravas with that of the hosting ground, Clayfield. Taking advantage of a local holiday, the event was wonderfully organised by our Young Turk Dharam (Dharam Teja Mansingh), with excellent support by the State Lead Sambit Das and other members of the community. Apart from all the cricket enthusiasts, the event was attended by family members including the young kids. The beautiful Challenger Cup, sponsored by Orioz Australia was lifted by the overjoyed Odisha Ratnas, after an exellent game of cricket. The enjoyable social event culminated with a biryani lunch. Excellent photography by Sidharth captured the key moments of the event and the creative flyer was prepared by Ashish Panigrahi. With the outstanding success of the event, the community is looking forward to another sports event soon. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 6

State NEWS WESTERN AUSTRALIA Ganesh Puja Ganesh Puja 2020 was celebrated by Orioz inc members on 22.08.2020 at Corinthian hall, Shelly. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 7

State NEWS VICTORIA With Stage-4 lockdown in force, the state of Victoria had spent unusually quiet 3 months since June. All the members were pretty much confined to a 5km restricted zone around their house and waged a tough battle with the pandemic being cut off from other Australian states and the world. In this situation, a group of volunteers led by Sikander Alam and Sambit Das tried to touch base with as many Orioz members as they could to do a remote health check and shared a few words as a gesture of support for each other in the community. As no face-to-face interactions were possible during period, the team organized some online sessions over the video conferencing platform (ZOOM) to beat the isolation and keep the community connected. Some of these events were organized with sports as a theme. After the retirement of legendary Indian Captain MS Dhoni, Barun Patra hosted a trivia session to remember his life and superlative deeds on the cricket field. Then with the ever popular Indian Premier League around the horizon, Sameek Mohanty orgnized a session where groups of members represented different IPL franchises and analyzed their team potential to win this year's competition. Though linked to our common enthusiasm around cricket, It brought about the bonhomie and camraderie among different members currently living far from each other. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 8

AMA KATHA The Idea of being Rich!!!! Among the many festivities and traditions observed by Odias-there's one which remains close to my heart. Its special to me. I am among the few lucky ones, who gets into the center of attraction. It’s a feeling of stardom and pampering which marks this special day.ubheading Yes – I am talking about Prathamashtami which is SAMYAK celebrated in honor of the first borns of Odia MISHRA, VIC households. Typically this day falls around Kartika Purnima. As a kid,the day would start with my grand mother ;I fondly call her “Bou”- waking me up to take bath early morning. A new dress would be waiting for me. After getting dressed up; it was time to get decked up. Funnily enough, small dots of sandalwood paste would be placed all around my forehead. I would look pretty close to being a little groom!!. Then Bou would call me to sit in front of her in the puja room and rituals would commence. The puja was pretty interesting. With a lit lamp,Bou would perform the worshipping(adoration) by first offering prayers to God. Then the same lit lamp would be circled around my face – all the while chanting mantras. My little eyes followed the path of the lamp. The puja would enter its cresendo with me holding the auspicious offering of the day “enduri pitha”. With loud chants of sanskrit slokas , I would be showered with little grains of rice and the puja would come to an end. The offering(“Enduri Pitha”) was be typically a combination of flour and gram based bread wrapped in turmeric leaf. Bou would command me to bow and pray to God first. Then she would ask me to touch her feet.I would fondly do it, as I would get my first earnings of the day. She would lovely hand me some coins and whisper in my ears – “Its your day today. Touch the feet of every elder today. I would immediately commence the project of touching the feet of all of them. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 11

AMA KATHA A little man about 6 years of age, going around the house, bowing and touching the feet of all elders and receiving coins in return was an exciting return. And I ensured that I never left any stones unturned. I even once touched the feet of an elderly lady who worked as a house maid at our house!! Bou gave me some coins on her behalf. I am pretty sure looking back .. the idea of coins was more important than the significance of the bowing and touching the feet of elders!!bheading By afternoon,I would have toched feet of ma, papa, my aunts and uncles who lived with us.. essentially I would have a bounty of Rs 10 in coins.. good enough to get me some icecreams at the school canteen. In the evening –the celebrations continued… I would visit homes of other relatives. The same ritutal of touching their feet and getting paid continued. Most of them loved the idea of a little me eagerly bowing and touching their feet and always handed me the coins after smiling hugging me. Towards mid evening I would start flaunting my earnings. My pockets would be full of coins and would never trade them for cash notes. The clinging sounds of the coins in my pockets was a concious promotion of me getting to the next elder expecting some coins. I had learnt the trick from loads of icrecream and cake hawkers who went around neighborhood with bells letting all of us know of their arrival. The feeling of being rich would honestly be pampering and tilting towards a sense of pride. But I loved it. For a long time I used think that Pratahmashtami’s sole purpose was to be wealthy on my own way and never thought about its social significance. As years passed Bou passed away. I moved out of home for studies and work. The news of upcoming Prathamashtamis would be informed by my mother on phone. Ma would always ask me to buy a new dress and visit the temple. Many times I oblized. Most times I would swap the new dress with buying something new for me such a badminton racket,an audio system etc. OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 12

AMA KATHA Over the last few years however – I started to feel a void during Prathamashtami, everytime my mother reminded me. My customised way of observing the ritual has become a benchmark for me. But I missed the clinging of the coins. I missed the smiles of elders the moment I touched their feet.I missed the Sanskrit slokas, showering of rice on me and the lovely frangrance of the enduri pitha. The feeling of being wealthy was missing. Most importantly I missed the purpose of Prathamashtami - which was to be blessed by elders for being the older one of the household. As I tide through the tussles of traditions and modernisation; I have conviniently ignored the traditions and moved ahead with time. However as a thread of of our Odia culture – I wish to continue remembering those wonderful times which has shaped me.eading -------- XXXXXXXXX ------- OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 13

AMA KATHA The Bushfires of 2020 When I think about 2020, there is a very little to cheer. This Margie Biswal year has been hit by series of disasters. To me the bushfires Victoria of 2020 is by far the most disastrous, nerve-racking events of the year. The fires blazed through most of Australia’s iconic forest and bushland. It damaged many homes and natural habitats, leaving countless animals and people homeless. It was so devastating that it felt like I was watching a horror movie in real life. The skies were filled with smoke and an unpleasant burning odour. There was the deep dark orange cloud as far as I can see. The flames raised higher and higher, burning everything in its path. Houses and castles were burnt to the ground. The poor koalas and kangaroos sprint towards safety, but unfortunately some of them were not able to reach in time. The soft, green grass was burnt by the raging fires, turning it into ashy black powder. The fires were so high that it could be seen from the space. Help poured in from every part of Australia and from many parts of the world. The firemen came rushing with a hose in their hands. Helicopters fill the sky, holding vast buckets of water. The sound of sirens echoed sharp and clear through the endless bushland. Embers of fire float in the air as the fire roared on. The furious fire did not spare the helpful people either, some of these heroes lost their lives trying to help stop the tragic fires. My heart feels for them. Many of the bushfires this year were believed to be caused by the struck of dry lightning. However, there were news of some accidental or deliberate lit too. The drought from past years helped the fire spread across Australia. Scientist believe it is a manmade disaster as the root cause of bush fire is global warming that us humans are responsible for. Hopefully, we have learnt our lessons from this disaster prevent the same in the future by preserving the nature. ----- XXXXXX ------ OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 17

AMA KATHA A \"day\" in Paris !! Saanvi Dash Victoria “Welcome to Paris”, said the air hostess. I looked out of the window and saw a very big city. In a few moments, we arrived in Paris. We got off the plane and went to our hotel. We threw our bags. We came out of our hotel room and walked to the city. While we were walking, we saw a beautiful macaroon store. I asked my Mum and Dad if I could have one and they said yes. I got many flavours and ate them all up. Then, we got back to the hotel and rested in our room. After some time, my Dad rented a car and we went to Disneyland. I had so much fun !! We returned to the city in our car and saw the glamorous, glowing Eiffel Tower. We came back to our hotel room and slept. Suddenly, I heard my Dad’s voice; “Siddhi, wake up, it's time for your class Webex meeting.” I woke up and saw that I was still in Melbourne. And, it was a dream. I hope I can go to Paris when this coronavirus ends. ----- XXXXXX ------ OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 18

AMA KATHA CoronA ViRUS Hello! My name is Corona Virus! First name Corona, last name Virus! But my nickname everybody calls me is Covid-19! But Vaibhavi Srivastava, QLD you’re probably wondering why the number 19 is in my nickname? Well that is because I’m the 19th member Parents - Ruchi & Neeraj Srivastava of the disease family ! Anyway, my mum is the flu, and my dad is the cold! But you see, I’m an energetic little virus, and I love to travel the world! But I’m very slow on my own, soa person’s dirty hand or mouth makes a pretty good place to settle in or stay in. I usually have a nice long sleep in the person’s body, but you see, I’m a playful virus, so after 2 weeks I start Add a subheadinggetting bored of sleeping and start pacing around the person’s body. That makes the have a runny nose, sore throat, dry coughs, trouble breathing, fever and tiredness. After some time they take that person to hospital, and try and find me. They usually do, and kick me out of their body into my own family. People here don’t really like me being in their bodies, so they wear masks, put hand sanitizer on and wash their hands frequently. So that prevents me from getting into their body, because their mouths are blocked and their hands a really clean, so I get bored from being on their hand because there’s no germs to talk to. So that’s the way people are preventing me from getting in their body.publish is accurate.g me from getting in their body.publish is accurate. ----- XXXXXX ----- OCTOBER 2020 DWAIPAYANA 19

AMA KATHA LIFE DURING COVID COVID-19 is a type of virus that was first Mokhyada, QLD reported in Wuhan, China in late 2019. It is important to maintain good hygiene, practice Parents - Sonalisa & Rakesh Nanda social distancing, avoid public gatherings and to self-isolate if you are concerned. The meaning of life for me has changed a lot. COVID-19 taught me that life is about caring for our friends and family, even if you can’t physically meet them. With suddenly so much spare time on our hands, we learn more about each other. We had a great time watching movies, playing games, painting, singing and dancing together at home.I think that the lockdown was enjoyable. I virtually painted with Subrat Uncle, had singing lessons from home, discovered a new hobby of watercolor painting and generally had a great time. I didn’t expect that staying at home with nothing to do for more than a month could be so fun ! OCTOBER 2020 ----- XXXXXX ----- 20 DWAIPAYANA
