The Plot
Josey Aimes returns to Minnesota. Josey Aimes (Clarize Theron) who had abusive husband returns with her children Sammy and Karen to her homeland in northern Minnesota, where she lives with her parents (Alice Aimes and Hank Aimes). Hank despises Joseybecause she had Sammy as a teen without knows the father. Josey reunites with an old friend, Glory Dodge, who works at the local iron mine and encourages Josey do the same, as the money is six times higher. Josey and her kids live with Glory and her husband after getting a job at the mine as her relationship with Hank worsen. The mine's work environment Josey eventually befriends several other female mine workers and discovers that the women are targets for sexual harassment and humiliation. Bobby Sharp, Josey's high school ex, particularly target her. Josey tries to discuss the issue with her boss, Arlen Pavich, but he ignores her concerns. As a revenge, Bobby accuse that Josey tried to seduce him, prompting his wife to humiliate Josey publicly during Sammy's hockey game. Sammy became resentful of the town's treatment and believes the rumours about his mother's promiscuity.
Meeting with Don Pearson goes wrong Despite his words saying that he is always there to help, Don Pearson has brought Pavich and several other executives to the meeting and offers to accept Josey resignation immediately. She refuses, and when Pearson hints he believes her bad rumours, she leaves. Later, Bobby sexually attacked Josey knowing that she tried to complain to Pearson, she resigns and begs Kyle and Glory's lawyer friend Bill White to assist her in suing the firm. Bill recommends her to launch a class action case with other women, which will be the first filed case regarding this matter. However, the women afraid losing their jobs and being harassed more, so Josey takes the case alone. She soon learns Glory has Lou Gehrig's Disease and is fast worsening. She still my daughter!!! Alice leaves Hank after an argument over Josey's lawsuit. A union gathering interrupts and insults Josey's attempts to address the miners and explain her reasons for suing the mine, prompting Hank to defend Josey and admonish his coworkers for their treatment to all female miner there. Then Josey and Hank reconcile. Bobby testifies that Josey's son, Sammy is the consequence of a relationship between Josey and their high school teacher, Paul Lattavansky. Josey then explains that she was raped by Lattavansky resulting her pregnancy with Sammy. Hank attacks Lattavansky and Josey storms out of court.
All she wanted was to make a living, Instead she make history. Bill interrogates Bobby and gets him to reveal that he saw Paul rape Josey, but was too afraid to act. Glory, who is partially paralyzed and unable to talk, has Kyle read a letter in which she expresses her support for Josey, but this still not meet the requirement to qualify this case as a class action lawsuit against the company. After a brief pause, a few of the women, family members, and a few non- harassing male miners make their mark to support Josey case. Because of this, a landmark sexual harassment policy has been implemented at the mining corporation. The End
