CVN Kalari, Japan Chizuko Asami began her training under Sunil Gurukkal in 2001, at CVN Kalari (Calicut, Kerala). She started teaching Kalaripayattu in Tokyo since 2006, with years of training and experience at CVN Kalari(Calicut, Kerala). She incorporated CVN KALARI JAPAN together with Nidheesh Gurukkal(certified as a master teacher by CVN Kalari) after he moved to Japan in 2012. Pulivesha Pili Nalike or tiger dance, is a folk dance form of Dakshina Kannada the coastal belt of Karnataka. This dance or performance is offered as an offering to Godess Durga during Navaratri. As per local beliefs, a mother of a young child who had walking disabilities since birth had vowed to Goddess Mangaladevi that if her child were to find strength in his limbs she would have him painted like a tiger and dance at the shrine like her vahana (vehicle). It is believed that the child was cured of his disability and to this day every year, we can find young tiger cubs practicing dance steps and turning to tigers during Mangalore Dushera. Sandosham Group, Japan SANDOSHAM is an Indian movie dance team, formed by Mikan and the students. Mikan had been coached by a genuine dance master from south India. Now several Indian movie dance classes are offered mainly in Shibuya. Mikan also teaches at culture schools and a university. Our team organize a charity event regularly and donate to children in Varanasi who cannot go to school for various reasons. We are actively engaged in the Indian movie dance because we wish to introduce and spread interest of Indian culture widely in Japan. Today, we are going to present three numbers in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam , all of which are all happy songs. We will perform our beloved Indian dance with all our heart today. Yavanika Theatres Yavanika Theatres was formed by a bunch of charismatic and enthusiastic individuals with the sole aim of creating and promoting arts, especially live theatre productions, in Japan. Through such performances and events, Yavanika Theatres aims at enhancing the cultural integration between Japan and India. With this purpose, Sangamam 2022 is the first event being organized by Yavanika Theatres. The event will be headlined by their first theatre production – Shilapuranam. Shilapuranam Scene 1 Summary The evil king, Veerendra, is returning to his court in the kingdom of Panchashrunga after a successful conquest along with his Army commander in chief, namely Chandrasena. Amidst the celebrations, news arrives that a bunch of young subjects are revolting against the King’s decision to build a humongous statue as tribute to himself. Enraged, King Veerendra orders the arrest and imprisonment of the youngsters at the site of the statue and further, their execution on the day of unveiling of the statue. The mysterious sculptor, Kalicharan enters the court, proclaiming that he will build the statue for the King and future generations, all by himself. He even has a location at the foot of Mahendragiri valley, which the royal court accepts. King Veerendra orders Chandrasena to guard the construction site with all possible might and anybody who opposes shall be punished severely. YAVANIKA THEATRES SANGAMAM 2022

Shilapuranam Scene 1 Transcript The victorious King Veerendra enters with his military chief, Chandrasena. The Chief Minister, the Royal Advisor (Raja Guru) and the Royal Priest are already present in court. The jubilant King Veerendra and his courtiers discuss about the great victory, further conquests and other steps taken to ensure that praise for the King reaches across the kingdom. Veerendra asks the Minister to update him about the preparations for making the greatest sculpture known to man. Minister informs that the news has been spread to all corners of the kingdom. At this moment, a foot soldier enters with news that a few youth have revolted against the making of the great sculpture. Enraged, King Veerendra orders them to be arrested and be brought to court. Soldiers bring the youth tied up, but they bravely raise their concern that the people in the country are suffering from poverty and hunger. They demand the use of the money for the sculpture for the benefit of the public instead. YAVANIKA THEATRES SANGAMAM 2022

Shilapuranam Scene 1 Transcript The King and his court are furious at this audacity and the King orders the youth to be imprisoned at the site of the construction of the sculpture. The King decrees that the youth will be executed when the sculpture will be unveiled. The hapless youth are dragged away mercilessly. Another soldier informs the court about the arrival of the mystical sculptor, Kalicharan. Kalicharan claims that he knows exactly what the King wants and that he can complete the task by himself, even though King Veerendra offers all the help he may need. Kalicharan suggests that he has found the perfect location and stone at the foothills of Mahendragiri valley and requests permission to start work. The King is mighty impressed and grants permission to make the sculpture. Kalicharan takes leave. However, King Veerendra orders for the close security at the site of the sculpture and warns that even a whisper of disobedience will not go unpunished in his kingdom. Shilapuranam Scene 2 Summary After impatiently waiting for the royal priest to handover the massive stone, Kalicharan ecstatically starts his work. Some soldiers mock the youth and try to persuade them to give up their rebellion. However, the defiant youth are hell bent on continuing their rebellion, come what may. Soldiers and the masses are mesmerised by the talent and lineage of the sculptor. As time passes by and the sculpture takes shape, Kalicharan orders the sculpture to be covered and hidden so that no one sees it before the unveiling. After months, Kalicharan completes the sculpture and dances in celebration. News reaches the royal court and the Minister asks to see the statue. Kalicharan refuses saying it will be unveiled only in front of the King and sets a date for the same. YAVANIKA THEATRES SANGAMAM 2022

Shilapuranam Scene 2 Transcript The great Mahendragiri mountain in the background, Kalicharan paces restlessly in front of the stone he had selected for the sculpture. The imprisoned youth are struggling in heavy chains. The royal priest enters and declares that it is time to sanctify the stone before beginning to work on the sculpture. Kalicharan obviously unimpressed waits impatiently for the priest to complete. Once the priest leaves, he performs a dance as if spiritually connecting with the stone and in a trance, begins work on the stone. A few days later, two soldiers come to check on the prisoners. They make fun of the youths’ stupid idea to revolt against the King. However, the youth are unfazed and give fiery replies to the soldiers. Death itself cannot scare them. The soldiers, although bit impressed with the youth, return to the palace fearing punishment if they are heard supporting the youth. Weeks and months pass by. The youth are weltering away in the heat and rain and cold. YAVANIKA THEATRES SANGAMAM 2022

Shilapuranam Scene 2 Transcript Soldiers pass by to check on the prisoners. They discuss about the great lineage and talent of Kalicharan. Even though he is such a famous artist, he is known for his eccentric character and wild temper. The soldiers get rudely sent away when they try to get close to Kalicharan. This reaffirms the rumours about the sculptor and the soldiers return. Few more months pass by and now some part of the sculpture can be seen. It looks like a huge bird with it wings spread wide. Soldiers discuss about the beauty and magnificence of the sculpture. Kalicharan asks the soldiers to bring a huge cover that can hide the sculpture. The soldiers obey and return. A few days later, Kalicharan emerges from behind the covers and starts dancing in a wild trance. Soldiers and the prisoners are mesmerised and scared. The soldiers rush to inform the royal court that the sculpture is completed. The Minister, upon receiving news about the sculpture goes to Mahendragiri and requests Kalicharan to show the sculpture but Kalicharan apologises and says that he will show the sculpture to the King on the day of the unveiling. He then proceeds to tell the Minister that the unveiling will happen the following day. Minister returns to the palace to inform the King. YAVANIKA THEATRES SANGAMAM 2022

Shilapuranam Scene 3 Summary King Veerendra, his courtiers and some of the countrymen gather at Mahendragiri to witness the unveiling of the grand sculpture built by Kalicharan. Will the sculpture appeal to King Veerendra? Will the youth be killed as ordered? Or… YAVANIKA THEATRES SANGAMAM 2022

Shilapuranam Scene 3 Transcript Kalicharan, some soldiers and some countrymen are gathered around the sculpture which is still covered. The King and his court enters. King Veerendra asks Kalicharan to show him the sculpture. Kalicharan signs the soldiers to move the covers. Behold! A great sculpture of a Vulture! King Veerendra and all present are mighty impressed. The ecstatic King offers anything as reward to Kalicharan which he refuses but requests permission to worship the sculpture before handing it over to the kingdom. Veerendra agrees even though the priest protests. Kalicharan performs a mad ritual and falls dead declaring his life to be absorbed by the sculpture. Suddenly, the sculpture starts to move as if it has come to life. It starts moving towards the crowd attacking innocent onlookers. Even more thrilled, the King declares this beast as his servant who will oppress the people! However, the beast being of vile nature, turns out to be a tyrant and attacks the King’s soldiers. Shilapuranam Scene 3 Transcript Veerendra, now angry, asks Chandrasena to fight and capture the beast. Chandrasena and his soldiers perish in the fierce battle. King Veerendra himself attacks the beast but is killed. Using this diversion, the prisoners free themselves and attack the beast that has been trying to kill everyone. With a concerted effort they are able to bring the beast of oppression down. They are finally free, in all sense of the word and they resolve to fight all ignorance, hatred and oppression together. Shilapuranam - Message We see all around us unspeakable atrocities committed against humanity, in the name of fake morality and righteousness. Sadly, humans have come to the point of being nothing but \"thinking animals\" in a society tumbling down the path of moral degradation and apathy.
