Page 18 Health & Wellness Walking: Take Steps Toward Better Health One of the most effective forms of exercise is something that doesn’t involve grueling effort or long hours in the gym. In fact, you’ve been doing it every day since you were a toddler: It’s walking. When you decide to walk for fitness, it does take a little bit of planning and effort. But by incorporating more steps into your daily routine, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier lifestyle. Here are some of the benefits of establishing a regular walking routine:  Increase HDL (the “good” cholesterol) and lower LDL (the “bad” cholesterol)  Increase muscle tone and bone density  Increase energy, stamina and metabolism  Reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), back pain and arthritis  Reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity  Reduce stress How many steps do you have to take for your body to feel the benefits? The recommended number of steps per day is 10,000. By wearing a pedometer or other personal fitness device, you can track your steps easily. Or, use a step-counting app on your smartphone. Try tracking your steps for a day as you go through your normal routine. You might be surprised at how many steps you’re already taking. You can use that number as a baseline as you increase your steps to an activity level that’s right for you. If you don’t have a step-counting device, just track the amount of time you dedicate to walking throughout the week. An effective routine will consist of walking for 30-60 minutes a day, five days a week. Get the most out of a walking routine with these tips:  If you have health problems, check with your doctor before starting a walking program.  Choose comfortable, supportive shoes, such as running, walking, or cross training shoes, or wear light hiking boots.  For longer walks, warm up with stretching exercises and include a cool-down period to reduce stress on your heart and muscles.  Practice correct posture as you walk — head upright, arms bent at the elbow and swinging as you stride.  What’s a good pace? A rule of thumb is that you should be able to carry on a conversation while walking, but not sing.  Drink plenty of water before, during and after walking to cool your muscles and keep your body hydrated.  Find ways to make your walks more fun — you’ll look forward them to them and they’ll go faster. You might find a friend to walk with, listen to music, or catch up on a radio program or podcast you enjoy. Once you make a brisk walk part of your routine, your day just won’t feel right without it! Page 23 2020 Insurance Changes Every year we evaluate the cost of health care for our business. The fiscal year of 2019 was not a good one for our company. The use of our health program is up 14% over 2018 and the cost of care has risen 22%. Therefore, we have taken steps to attempt to control future costs. These changes will still provide benefits for our team so that they receive the most comprehensive health care packages available while keeping cost affordable. The following few changes will take effect in January for the 2020 plan year. 1. The fourth quarter deductible carry-over is no longer available. Currently, amounts applied toward the de- ductible in the fourth quarter also apply to the next year deductible. 2. The maximum out of pocket allowed will no longer include the annual deductible. Currently the maximum out of pocket amount allowed includes the deductible amount of $1500/$750.  Beginning January 1, 2020 the deductible will not be included in the maximum out of pocket allowed. (scheduling your preventative health screening and blood work up will assist in keeping cost down) 3. Vision benefits will remain the same; however, there will be a slight premium increase. Current premiums are $1.50 for single and $3.00 for family coverage.  Beginning on January of 2020, Single coverage will be $1.75 and Family coverage will be $3.50 4. RX Benefits will manage the Prescription drug plan in 2020. Currently the Prescription Drug Plan is with Express-Scripts.  You will receive a new prescription card for 2020 and it will be important to throw away the old card and replace with the new cards.  RX Benefits will take steps to make sure we are using the most cost effective medicines while still ad- dressing patient symptoms.  Your Co-payments will remain the same.  You will continue to see the Express Script name on the card. If you have created an account with Ex- press-Scripts, your user name and passwords will remain the same.  RX Benefits is a utilization management program. You may be required to receive new authorizations for your prescription use. 5. Dental insurance will be with Delta Dental of SC. Effective January 1, 2020. Currently WSI offers dental ben- efits through The Standard.  The dental benefits coverage will now include orthodontics and implants.  You will receive a new card and should discard the Standard dental card after January 1, 2020.  The employee contribution for single coverage and plus one coverage will be lower than current premi- ums (New rates are $3.65 EE Only, $8.82 EE + 1) (Current is $3.88, $9.13)  The employee contribution for family is slightly higher. (New Rate = $15.41 for Family) (Current is $14.47) 6. A diabetes management platform; ONE DROP, has been added to the 2020 benefits package at no addition- al cost to the employees. 7. Employee contributions for medical will remain the same. New Benefit Guides will be available next month, please see your manager to get your copy. The Benefit Guides will have all of the new Legal Notices for 2020 as well as all of the changes mentioned in this article. Lea Ann Stierley 23
