MAY 2023 ISSUE 4 THE DAILY ‘O’ WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE O… Graffiti Alley By: Anjila Khatiwada Graffiti is an art form that holds a lot of stigma. Its criminal connotations make it unwelcome in many places. People have gone far enough to say it isn’t art at all. Graffiti is exhibited as vandalistic but that does not invalidate the creativity and self- expression that goes into creating the pieces. This art form is still rejected from the average streets. There is a place, however, on 128 W North Ave, Baltimore, MD 21201 where this art form is appreciated and encouraged. Hidden away in Baltimore City is a place called “Graffiti Alley”. Created in 2005, this alley presents a haven for artists who use graffiti art to express themselves without risk of arrest or fines. On the adjacent building, you will find colorful portraits including one of Edgar Allen Poe, cats, and a bejeweled dancer. But the true attraction is when you enter the alley. Looking to your sides, looking up, and even below your feet you will see graffiti. Stepping into the alley myself felt almost surreal as it was larger and more dynamic than what I had seen in pictures. An incredible thing about the alley is that it is constantly changing. These pictures I took on March 19th, 2023 of the most recent artworks. If you go see it today, it will have most likely changed. I encourage you to take a drive down and see it for yourself! THE DAILY ‘O’ TEMITAYO ARIYO, OVERLEA HIGH SCHOOL BCPS schools attended: Shady Spring Elementary School, Golden Ring Middle School, Sollers Point Technical High School, and Overlea High School Tell us about a teacher, assignment, field trip, or extracurricular activity that had a significant impact on you? Running for my school has completely changed who I am as a person in the best ways possible. Track and field has introduced me to amazing people, exposed me to hardship and difficulty, and has made me a thousand times stronger than I would be without it. It has shown me what it means to be committed, what it means to sacrifice, and most importantly what it's like to find a family within a team. The people I have met and worked with as an athlete are some of the closest people to me. I can't imagine my life without them, and every day, I am grateful for their impact on me. “Track and field has introduced me to amazing people, exposed me to hardship and difficulty, and has made me a thousand times stronger than I would be without it.” What did you accomplish that you are most proud of? The accomplishment I'm most proud of isn’t a single achievement, but rather the legacy and precedent I will leave behind at my school. The most important thing that I could do for my school is leave an impact as a role model for the younger students and those who are to come in the future. I want my academics, athletics, and participation in school organizations to provide an example for students to follow, and every time I achieve something which helps to fulfill this, I am proud. “I want my academics, athletics, and participation in school organizations to provide an example for students to follow, and every time I achieve something which helps to fulfill this, I am proud.” What’s next for you? Committing to a 4-year college where I will major in kinesiology and continue my cross country/track and field career. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Pursuing osteopathic medicine upon completing undergrad. Favorite quote “It's a good day to have a good day.” Favorite book \"The Kite Runner\" by Khaled Hosseini PAGE 5
