Our Profile HISTORY AND BUSINESS OF THE COMPANY HEBN Publishers Plc (formerly Heinemann Educational Books (Nigeria) Plc) was established in Nigeria as a sales outlet of Heinemann Educational Books, UK in 1962. The company was incorporated in 1969. In 1972 with the indigenization decree, the company became publicly owned with 40% shareholding by Nigerians while Heinemann Books, UK had 60% of the equity. But this was reversed with the revised indigenization decree of 1977. It became 60% to Nigerians and 40% to Heinemann, UK. Heinemann UK was acquired by Harcourt Education Limited (which has also been acquired by Pearson Education Ltd). However, Harcourt Education UK disposed of its shares in 2006 and our company is now fully owned by Nigerians. The company has been in the forefront of Educational and General Publishing in Nigeria for over fifty years now. The company has been built from the start (when it was incorporated) by an all-Nigerian staff. The company's strength hinges mainly on an efficient administration, sound financial management, a strong publishing team and a dynamic sales and marketing force. The company publisher and markets books which span all levels of education, that is, Pre-Primary, Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary and Tertiary as well as leisure and general readership. ABOUT HEBN PUBLISHERS PLC Our company is a foremost publisher in Nigeria, and indeed, in the Commonwealth. We are reputed for publishing literary works, including the African Writers Series under which the “immortal” Things Fall Apart was published some fifty-five years ago. We are also known for the famous senior secondary school chemistry book, A New Certificate Chemistry by Holderness and Lambert. We publish a strong list of excellent texts in the arts, social sciences, pure science, mathematics and technology at the Primary, JSS, SSS and tertiary levels. The company also has children's literature titles and general books on leisure, contemporary socio-political and economic issues, etc. In particular, we are the publishers of the outstandingly successful Nigerian Integrated Science Project (NISP), a junior secondary school (JSS) Integrated Science text (now Nigerian Basic Science Project) produced by the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and published locally in 1971. Textbooks and other instructional materials are indispensable tools for education and indeed for teaching and learning. They are also the vital ingredients of socio-cultural and economic development. Therefore making them available is a great challenge. To this end, and as partners in progress in the development of education, our company collaborates with stakeholders in making educational materials available and affordable in schools and colleges at the right quantity, quality and variety. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE We pioneered Joint Publishing Ventures with State Governments and other institutions and societies in Nigeria. We have, in fact, answered the call of State Governments, institutions of learning, government parastatals and subject associations to develop course books and supply library and school texts. For example, we collaborated with the old Imo State (now Imo and Abia States), to publish a primary school course series 4 .................................................................................................................

Our Profile in English Language titled Imo Reader and later changed to Primary English Today; and the old Rivers State (now Rivers and Bayelsa States) to publish course books in Primary Social Studies,Mathematics, Civics and Art and Crafts. Also we collaborated with the old Kano State (now Kano and Jigawa States) to produce Primary Education Curricula for Primary School Teachers and Jagorar Malami Ilmi Bada. Aside from State Governments, we also collaborated with subject associations like the Historical Society of Nigeria to produce Groundwork of Nigerian History; and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), among others, to produce Nigerian Integrated Science Project (now Nigerian Basic Science Project), STAN Chemistry, STAN Biology and STAN Physics. Furthermore, we have worked with government parastatals such as the National Teachers' Institute (NTI) to produce Course Books on Mathematics Modules 1-9 and Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Abuja, in producing primary school courses in English Language and Mathematics titled: Primary English for Nigerian Schools and Primary Mathematics for Nigerian Schools which have been changed to Prime English and Prime Mathematics respectively and Comparative Education Study and Adaptation Centre (CESAC) Social Studies Project, now Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) Nigerian Secondary Schools Social Studies Project for JSS. World Bank Primary Education Projects (PEP) I and II We like to state that we are one of the few publishers involved in the production and distribution of primary school textbooks to local government areas in some states under the three phases of the World Bank-assisted Primary Education Project (PEP) I (in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education/National Primary Education Commission). Among top publishers in Nigeria and abroad, we were the winner of the World Bank Primary Education Project (PEP) II contract, which we duly completed, for the procurement and distribution of library books and supplementary readers to focus primary schools throughout the Federation. We gained considerable experience with this project which involved the procurement of some 2 million local and foreign supplementary readers and library books from Nigeria, Ghana, Cote D'Ivoire, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Europe, the US, etc., and distribution to 1,110 focus schools (i.e. 30 in each of the 36 States and FCT). Other Contract Awards We participated some years ago in the Federal Ministry of Education-sponsored supply of library books to fourteen old secondary schools in some States of the Federation. We also won Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) National Educational Materials Procurement Programme contract for the supply of over 1 million various textbooks to primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria. We won and executed a contract to produce 430,000 books for JSS and SSS under the Cross River State Book Development Project, as well as the second phase of this contract which involved the production of about 500,000 books. Then the third phase involving 495,000 books which we have equally executed. Similarly, we have been involved in book supply contracts with the Federal Ministry of Education, and Abia, Adamawa, Benue, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Yobe, Taraba and other States. 5 .................................................................................................................
