The contrast of precast concrete panels and Sun shades used for light control in the glass curtain walls create the industrial look exhibit spaces. that is reflected throughout the building. 6

Adaptive ReuseIn this class the final project wasto build a bench at full scaleusing at minimum a recycledobject as well as incorporateany type of tropical hardwood.This design uses 100 yearold barn wood, newlybought purple heart tropicalhardwood, and reused bentsteel. The center is located onthe campus of Southern IllinoisUniversity Carbondale and willbe relocating across the Uni-versity and needed to ensurefit within the new space. The render and section (below) is a presentation of the Departments “Welcome” Wall This feature wall displaysthe word “welcome” in all of the languages spoken by international students and staff members of the university. The existing ceiling condition was kept for its unique use of coves and lighting 22

Actual Design UPPart of the furniture inventory included visiting multiple sites on campus toaccount all of the furniture that belonged to the department. Materials selectionswere chosen by the hired firm.23
