Since 2007, the Nuveen Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) has provided students with community-building activities which promote cultural understanding and inclusion. We are grateful that each year the Nuveen Benevolent Trust chooses to be part of our community of enduring supporters by dedicating annual funds to help the Nuveen Center develop and execute programming. Your annual investment continues to make a lasting impact on SAIC students who participate in programs each year. During the 2021-22 academic year, programs at the Nuveen Center had 1,833 attendees across 68 programs. Daniel Boucher, assistant director of Residence Life for conduct and special programs, shares: “With in-person programs back in swing, the Nuveen Center Staff was excited to return to large-scale in-person programs inside and outside the building. The center focused on hosting all in-person programs versus virtual ones to help students find a larger sense of community at SAIC.” Support for the Nuveen Center encourages SAIC’s students to engage fully in their commitment to inspiring the next generation of citizen artists. The pages that follow share achievements from the last academic year which support from the Nuveen Benevolent Trust makes possible. Thank you for your continued partnership. 1

AN UPDATE FROM THE NUVEEN CENTER Daniel Boucher, assistant director of Residence Life for Conduct and Special Programs In the 2021-22 academic year, the Nuveen Center Staff was excited to return to large- scale in-person programs on and around campus. Over the past year, the Nuveen Center focused programming in four areas to support community-building and connection for international students at SAIC: Chicago as Home, Making Together, Education and Sharing our Culture, and The Whole Student. Chicago as Home To help students feel at home in Chicago, new and returning students participated in excursions to different neighborhoods and learned about hidden gems of Chicago. Making Together Connecting students with others who have a shared interest, the Nuveen Center Make Together tutorials were led by Programming Assistants. Through these tutorials, students learned how to make items ranging from pumpkin spice lattes and tote bags to dorm decor and watercolors. Education and Sharing our Culture Helping students continue to learn and grow outside of the classroom is a goal for the Nuveen Center. Educational and cultural programs like the Mid-Autumn Festival, Korean language night, tea-tasting workshop, Lunar New Year, and Holi celebrations helped students learn more about a specific topic, culture, or resource at SAIC. The Whole Student The well-being of SAIC students is a key institutional focus. Nuveen Center programs like the LGBTQIA+ History Night and Internship Night helped students grow their understanding of themselves and also prepare for what is next after SAIC. 2 Opposite Page: Nuveen Center staff, clockwise from top left Ryan, Blake, Daniel, Shreya, Mila, Sai & Faith.:

SUMMARY OF CENTER ACTIVITY Each year, the Nuveen Benevolent Trust contribution offsets a portion of the cost of offering Nuveen Center programming to SAIC students. Since the Nuveen Center’s founding, it has hosted over 760 programs with more than 24,800 attendees. Now that students are back on campus and COVID-19 restrictions are lifting, we are seeing a renewed interest in our programming which is reflected in attendance numbers. 2021-2022 PROGRAMMING 9 The 18 Whole Education Student and Sharing 25 our Culture Making Together 16 Chicago as Home PROGRAM BUDGET 4

THE WHOLE STUDENT FALL FEST Nuveen partnered with Residence Life to host fall fest. Students were able to gather with their community right outside the 162 building. While there, students could participate in crafts, enjoy seasonal treats and take pictures at the fall themed photo booth. CHICAGO AS HOME ICE SKATING AT MILLENIUM PARK Nuveen Center staff collaborated with Residence Life to take students to ice skate in Millennium Park. Residents were able to attend for free and experience a Chicago tradition before the cold became unbearable. 6

MAKING TOGETHER ARTWORK DOCUMENTATION WORKSHOP Nuveen Programming Assistant Ryan, who is a photography student, gave a presentation on documentation practices and shared tips to help other students better photograph their work. Ryan also assisted students with documenting their work to put on their personal websites. EDUCATION AND SHARING OUR CULTURE KOREAN LANGUAGE NIGHT Nuveen Center staff offered Korean language night, where students learned about Korean culture and participated in an introductory Korean language lesson. 7

LOOKING AHEAD Your generous $30,000 contribution to the Nuveen Center and plus your additional $5,000 commitment to the Fund for SAIC last year made a huge difference in Nuveen Center programming. As COVID restrictions continue to lift, Nuveen Center staff are excited to host more programs that take students off campus. We look forward to bringing back bus trips that help students explore areas they would not typically be able to. Nuveen Center staff also look forward to finding new ways to use the physical space in Nuveen for ongoing programs, including setting up a clothing and book exchange that students can visit at any time. We look forward to discussing your support for this upcoming year. Your continued support will ensure that Nuveen Center staff continues to be a resource for SAIC students seeking to engage in cultural, educational, and community building activities.
