JAN BISHOPCANCERCENTEROn January 30, 2017, the Jan Bishop Cancer Centeropened its doors. The center is bright, spacious, andbrings all cancer-related services under the same rooffor the first time in the history of YVMC’s modernmedical campus. The center provides friends and lovedones a place to be comfortable while patients areundergoing treatment.The cancer center is part of a multi million dollar projectthat included renovating the hospital’s OutpatientPavilion and building a new 14,000-square-foot, two-storyaddition, with the cancer center on the top floor. The YVMCFoundation raised $3.8 million toward the project.This cancer center would not have been possible withoutJoe Bishop’s generous donation in his sister’s name to theYVMC Foundation’s fundraising campaign. We are so verygrateful to Joe for his continued support of our hospital.

PENGUINPLUNGEPicture a perfect March morning in Steamboat at the Catamount LakeHouse. Blue skies, puffy white clouds surrounded by vivid sunshine. Theoutside temperature a crisp 15 degrees. The pool, complete with floatingchunks of ice, a chilly 30 degrees. Why, you might ask, would anyone carewhat the temperature of the pool is on this beautiful March morning?Where else can you get dressed in costume, create a dance routine, performit in front of hundreds of adoring fans AND then jump in to 30 degreewater? The answer lies in the joy, excitement and craziness of the 13thAnnual Penguin Plunge.Raising money for YVMC’s Emergency and Trauma Services, this year’s themefor the Penguin Plunge was the 70’s and being one “Groovy Community.” Nearly100 people in 12 teams competed for several awards while raising moneyfor these services. More than $67,000 was raised that morning from thispassionate, fun spirited group. Congratulations to all the winners for theiroutstanding efforts in fundraising, performance and team spirit. Special thanksto everyone who sponsored, participated and contributed to making the 13thannual Penguin Plunge a success.

DIAMONDS& DENIMThe 3rd annual Diamonds & Denim event was once again a overwhelming success with morethan $263,000 raised for YVMC’s Emergency and Trauma Services. Belen De Leon, Channel 9’smeteorologist, was the emcee during an evening full of delicious food, laughter and comrad-ery. More than 300 attendees enjoyed live entertainment by the Front Range funk/rock’nroll band, The Motet. And yes, there were the famous blinking lights on the tables and on manyof the folks on the dance floor. Our gratitude goes out to the 85 sponsors who helped us reachour fundraising goal!

GARY AND SANDY NEALEGary and Sandy Neale led an active life while raising their two children in Illinois. They belonged toa swim and tennis club and spent most summer weekends on their sail boat on Lake Michigan.In the mid-70s, the Neale’s made the decision to head to Colorado for a family ski week. Their son,David, and daughter, Julie, quickly fell in love with Steamboat Springs and soon thereafter, the Nealefamily purchased a condominium.Gary retired in 2005 and their trips to Steamboat became more frequent. Gary said, “As vacation home-owners, we were in and out and had no connection to the community. It wasn’t until we discoveredsummer and all the great outdoor activities and what the entire town has to offer that we committedto retiring to Steamboat.”Sandy joined the YVMC Foundation Board of Directors in 2012. “It was the Board’s mission to bring aboutsuch wonderful services as the Gloria Gossard Breast Health Center, the Jan Bishop Cancer Center and nowYVMC’s Emergency and Trauma Services.” In 2014, her time on the Board was interrupted with a medicalissue. “Although most of my treatments were in Arizona where we spend half the year, I was able to havemy chemo infusions right here at home. That was such a blessing and it is for all those others who are ableto be treated here. We are pleased to have funded an infusion bay in the new Jan Bishop Cancer Center.”Gary and Sandy established the Neale Family Foundation, which funds many organizations such as STARS,The Boys and Girls Club, Strings, The Community Foundation, LiftUp and, of course, the YVMC Foundation. Julieis the Executive Director of STARS and David is involved with YMCAs in South Carolina. “Our grandchildren arenow bringing recommendations to our family foundation board. We seriously consider those recommendationsand are happy to be able to instill a sense of philanthropy in each of them,” said Gary, “YVMC is the place thatwe, our families and friends rely on for medical care. We know first-hand how important it is to preserve andenhance this quality community resource. “
