Outstanding Ridge gourd yield in Udalguri, Assam Situation: Mr. Dilip Rabha from Udalguri district of Assam was earning his living by cultivating paddy and selling vegetables in the market. Response: He showed interest and active participation in different extension programmes whenever held in his village. Seeing his active participation, CSS-ATMA at Khairabari block selected him as a beneficiary and assisted him in getting inputs like seeds, insecticides, fertilizers etc to go for commercialization of ridge gourd production. Result: He is earning Rs.72,000/- annually from his ridge gourd cultivation. He has cultivated ridge gourd in 0.3ha of land and got an average yield of 30 quintals. The plastic mulches were used in the rows and it was found that the yield of the crops increases with drastic reduction of weed infestation, cost of irrigation and labour charges etc. Out of the different mulches used, black polythene Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

He sold his produce @ Rs. 40/Kg which help him to earn Rs. 24,500/- per 0.13 ha with a cost involvement of Rs. 11,000/- per 0.13 ha. Composite Fish Farming in East Siang, Arunachal Pradesh Situation: Mr. Taki Muang of East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh started doing fishery with a failure in an area of 0.5 ha. He was disappointed by experiencing repeated failure in pisciculture as digging pond cost him higher expenses. Response: In the year 2013, he came in contact with Mr. S.M. Hussain, SMS Fisheries, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, East Siang along with the field staff of Agricultural Technology Management Agency Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

Success Stories of NE States | 44 (ATMA). Mr. Hussain proposed him to take one FLD (Front Line Demonstration) programme on composite fish farming in his pond in a participatory mode in collaboration with ATMA, East siang. Initially the FLD programme commenced with a training programme on ‘composite fish farming system’ for benefit of the fish growing farmers of the village. Mr. Muang along with few progressive farmers of the district were also taken to exposure visit to College of Fisheries Sciences, Central Agricultural University, Agartala, Tripura during North East Agri Fair organized by Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur. The visit was funded by ATMA, East Siang. Mr. Muang was involved in each and every step of the FLD operations. Result: The demonstration itself helped him to harvest a good rate of return and a tool of learning improved practices of fishery management. Evidence: Inspired by the FLD, many of the youths in the area have been coming up to take pisciculture as enterprises. 24. Successful case of Floriculture based Farm School in Mohonpur, Tripura Situation: Mr. Santo Bhowmik, of Mohonpur subdivision of Tripura was a marginal flower grower who cultivates various flowers ranging from tuberose, gladiolus, anthurium, gerbera and other orchids. The entire Mohonpur area is famous for flower production where most of the farmers engaged in flower production. Response: The agriculture department of Mohonpur sub-division has initiated a farm school in his farm covering 25 progressive flower growers of that locality. Keeping in view the growing demands of flowers in Agartala market and the potentialities of the Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

Success Stories of NE States | 46 area, the site has been selected purposively by department of agriculture. The technical guidance and other support were made available by the ATMA. Mr. Santo Bhowmik was selected as the nodal farmer of the farm school which helps him in getting ideas and information through interaction with the experts. Result: Followed by the technological intervention made by the agriculture department in his farm through farm school, Mr. Santo Bhowmik has expanded his cultivation area of flower to 5 ha from which he could earn enough to meet his family requirements. Evidence: Mr. Bhowmik is a source of inspiration for the entire fellow farmer in the area and it is because of his initiatives, the other farmers of the locality are getting benefit out of the farm school. Successful goatery production unit in Singai, West Bengal Situation: Mr. Santosh Paul of Singai village of Pachim Medinipur district of West Bengal was from a very poor family who started goatery farming in the year 2000 with 6 nos. of Black Bengal goats. Response: He was selected as a beneficiary of a training programme organized by ATMA Pachim Medinipur district. There, he learned the techniques of scientific rearing of goat and the method of breeding of local breeds with the high yielding breed. Result: He uses the scientific management of goats in his farm which he lateron extended with the help of his family members. He has taken the help of block veterinary dispensaries centre to upgrade his local stock of breed to high yielding one. Now, is earning Rs. 80,000-1,00,000 per annum. He has been a source of great inspiration for his neighbours who are also suffering from poverty and unemployment. 26. Story of Makhamali Women SHG of Sikkim Situation: Agriculture in Sikkim is still in the substinence level practised in the hilly slopes by poor farmers. Therefore, intensive measures have been taken by the concerned agencies for promoting profitable alternatives and adopting the group approach. Here is a story of an SHG that was formed in the year 2012 Response: Mr.Yogesh Gautam, BTM under the supervision of Mrs.S. L.Dorjee, Director, SAMETI, Gangtok has been making efforts to form SHGs. Success Stories of NE States | 49 and harvesting the mustard together. Mustard oil was extracted from the mustard produced and marketed it t get encouraging profits. Recently they are cultivating turmeric and are interested in value addition of turmeric. The SHG is supported by ATMA East Sikkim and is running farm school of seed cultivation of mustard. Result: The SHG has converted into a CIG and a Farm School on Oilseeds has been opened in 2014. The group was awarded by Honourable Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling on Kisan Mela at th Saramsa Garden on 18 January, 2014 for success achieved in Group Mustard cultivation Evidence: The success of the group members has been a great inspiration for the other farmers in the region. Success Stories of NE States | 50 27. A Journey from landless to a successful farmer from Mayong, Assam Situation: Mr. Pabitra Mandal, village 2 nos. Murkata, Mayong Dev. Block of Morigaon district was a landless agricultural labour who was somehow managing his nine numbers of families from daily wages. He studied up to class IX and started cultivation of vegetables by taking 0.02 ha of land on lease basis with the help of surplus money he saved from his daily wages. Response: He participated in one training programme on vegetable cultivation organized by the ATMA of Morigaon district of Assam. There he learned how to cultivate vegetables well ahead of time to catch the advance market for better price. Inspired by the input got in the training, he started cultivation of vegetables like ridge gourd, spine gourd and tomatoes like all season vegetables in a scientific manner. Success Stories of NE States | 51 Result: Now, Mr. Mandal is well known as a successful vegetable grower in the farming community of that locality. He has earned around Rs. 2.4 lakhs per annum from watermelon and a net profit of Rs. 1.5 lakh from off season vegetables like ridge gourd, bottle gourd, spine gourd, tomato, and brinjal. Evidence: Today Sri Probitra Mandal has become a proud owner of 2.4 ha of agricultural land. He is the pioneer of watermelon cultivation of that locality and now the farmers from nearby area are motivated to follow his practices of watermelon cultivation. Success Stories of NE States | 52 28. F. Sangkhuma – A progressive coffee grower of Lunglei, Mizoram Situation: Shri F. Sangkhuma of Lunglei district of Mizoram was earning his living for 5 members of his family from coffee plantation from his 4 ha of land. Coffee is one of the crops that suit the climatic condition of Mizoram. Response: Shri F. Sangkhuma started growing coffee production in the year 1993 with his 4 ha of land. He is earning Rs. 2,60,000/- per annum from his 8 ha of coffee plantation. The extension intervention under ATMA with the support from Coffee Board of India not only giving him technical expertise to run the business but also help him to earn constant flow of income by reducing distress sell of his produce. From the year 2012 onwards, the coffee board of India is purchasing coffee from his farm at a sustainable rate. Success Stories of NE States | 53 quintal in the year 2013. He had extended his farm from 4 ha to 8 ha of land by planting more numbers of coffee crops in the subsequent years. Evidence: Now, his coffee farm is already 21 years old, which is acting as sustainable source of income for his livelihood. Presently, all his family members were engaged in coffee production 29. Florist Pranbir: An idol in Pachim Mednipur of West Bengal Situation: Mr. Pranbir Maity of Jagpur village of Pachim Mednipur district of West Bengal started nursery on small scale comprising of 0.4 ha land with 5-6 nos of labour. Response: He attended a training programme organized by ATMA where he learned about the different techniques of cutting, grafting, T- budding, and layering needed for raising different varieties of rose. Result: Now, he is a proud owner of ‘Puspanjali’ flower nursery which has an annual transaction of Rs. 1.5 crore. The nursery has an Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

Success Stories of NE States | 54 area of 17 acre with 2500 different varieties of rose. These roses are exported to the southern part of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Dubai and Nepal. Out of the 17 acre of land, 5 acre of land is water which he utilizes for fish production. Now, he has 105 nos. of labour working together on permanent basis each day in his nursery. Evidence: Mr. Maity is leading a comfortable life and a great source of inspiration for all other. He has been invited to act as resource person in many training and his farm is being utilized as place of exposure visit. 30. Profitable paddy cultivation in Nagaon, Assam Situation: Mr. Satyendra Kuhar, a youth of Hojai Sub- division of Nagaon district of Assam is educated up to class IX with good marks. Success Stories of NE States | 55 Since, he is the only educated person from his family; his parents want to see him as a Govt. service holder. So, he tried hard to get a job and appeared many interviews, but his dream is not fulfilled. Response: He started helping his father in farming activities occasionally. At that time, he came in contact with the ATMA officials of the district who guided him properly and selected him for 2-3 nos of different training programme conducted by State Agril. Department. In the year 2012-13, he was selected for 1 ha demonstration of paddy cultivation under ATMA. Result: He worked hard and by the help of SRI method he got around 65 Qtls in one ha. And it was almost double he got than before. He got confident that with the help of modern technology and good quality inputs one can earn money from farming activities also. In the same time, the food cooperation of India launched one scheme to procure paddy with good price with the help of state Agril departments. Because of that, he could earn a good amount of money. He did 3 crops in a year and increased the cropping intensity up to 300 per cent. He successfully repaid the loan and because of the good track record of repayments, he got another loan of higher amount for the next cropping season. Success Stories of NE States | 56 Evidence: In the recent season, he got one KCC loan of Rs. 40,000/- from the potato cultivation. He installed one STW in the subsidized rate under RKVY scheme. Now, he becomes the president of local Farm Management Committee. With the help of FMC members he was cultivating potato in 2 ha of land to get a good harvest. Now, he is undergoing a training under SIRD Khanapara on Mushroom cultivation to set up one mushroom unit by formulating one SHG with the local people. Mr. Satyendra Kuhar has become a proud owner of a power tiller and his social status is now upgraded. Successful case of farmer’s club in Babpur, West Bengal Situation: Mr. Shankar Jana of Babpur village in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal was a progressive farmer who has set up three farmer’s interest group (FIGs) in the village successfully. Response: He got the idea of setting up farmer’s interest group (FIGs) from the field official of ATMA. All the line departments of agriculture i.e. horticulture, fisheries and agricultural marketing board have helped him since inception through technical guidance and assistance. The central and state sector schemes that help him are- ISOPOM, RKVY, NFSM. Result: Now, the 3 (three) FIGs together took the shape of farmer’s club and Mr Shankar Jana became the secretary of the club. The Farmer’s club has set up three marketing network i.e two at salt lake and one at Damdum. The club has also set up a bio village which is helping the farmers in getting higher price for their produce. Success Stories of NE States | 58 has set up at least one vermi-compost unit either pucca or ketcha. All the farmers of that village are producing rice by the SRI (Systemic Rice intensification) method. The village has its own seed stock for their own production and has been selling its produce under their own banner. This programme has a huge employment generation, increase demand for crop production and timely supply of inputs which ultimately help in uplifting the socio-economic condition of the beneficiaries. The farmers of that village has their own brand name under which they have been selling different vegetables like brinjal, capsicum, ridge gourd, okra, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, baby corn and turnips through their own marketing outlet. Evidence: The Non use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides has increases the crop diversification and cropping intensity in the Babpur village. Success Stories of NE States | 59 is covered under irrigation and the farmer’s don’t depend entirely on monsoon. Farm mechanization has started in the village and most of the progressive farmers use farm machines like power tiller, tractor, husking machine, power reaper etc. Easy access to market through private sector has reduced the risk and uncertainty of the produce in the village. 32. Improved livelihood through scientific cattle rearing in Vartak, Mizoram Situation: Mr. J. Thantluanga of Vartak, Mizoram was a small and traditional dairy farmer for last 10 years. He posses 1 acre of land which includes his house and cattle shed. He was struggling to fulfill the needs of his family members including the education of his children as he was getting only Rs. 2000/- per month as an income. Response: one day he came in contact with a veterinary scientist of KVK who advised him to attend a training programme on dairy Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

Success Stories of NE States | 60 farming organized by ATMA. He attended the training and learned the principles of scientific dairy farming. With the support of high quality semen and other facilities provided by the project centre at KVK, Champhai, he started cattle rearing in a scientific way. Result: Now, Mr. J. Thantluanga is having 5 milch cows which he is managing in a scientific manner to ensure at least 3 milching cows around the year to get uniform production. He is selling about 16 litre of milk per day in the local market which is sufficient to meet his family expenses including the children’s education. Evidence: His family is enjoying a good socio-economic status in the village and leading a comfortable life. He has converted his temporary cattle shed to permanent concrete shed with adequate space in between two animals. 33. Successful venture on Integrated Farming in Bishnupur, Manipur Situation: Mr. Thingbaijam Amuchon, a 36 year old progressive farmer of Bishnupur district of Manipur was somehow earning his living from the paddy cultivation. Success Stories of NE States | 61 Response: Things begin to change for him when he taken help and stated growing rice under the guidance of KVK Bishnupur and support from ATMA. He was motivated to grow ‘Tamphu Phou’ variety of paddy released by CAU, Imphal following terrace cultivation practices. Result: Now, he is growing paddy in 4.0 ha of land comprising of ‘Tamphu Phou’ and local aromatic black rice variety. Besides, he has 700 nos. of tick plantation in 0.25 acre of land and a composite fish farming unit. Evidence: Mr. Singh is leading a comfortable life with his family through integrated farming. He purchased one tractor, one power tiller and one irrigation pump out of his profit. Presently, he is a role model of the area and many youths are coming up to take agriculture as profession. Diversified farming in Sankarpur, West Bengal Situation: Mr. Gobinda Sardar of Sankarpur village of South Parganas district of West Bengal was a marginal farmers and somehow managing his family from the income he earned by selling vegetable produced in his farm. He was struggling for commercialization of his farm by getting financial assistance from banks. Response: He was selected as beneficiary of a training programme organized by ATMA on ‘Diversified farming’. There he learned about the different techniques and scientific management of farm. Success Stories of NE States | 63 Result: with the financial assistance he got from bank he extended his farm to 1.2 ha by leasing in 0.8 ha of land. He started diversifying his farm by accommodating both livestock and crop enterprises. He has a unit of dairy, poultry and fishery in his farm and a vermin-compost unit. He is having a vegetable gardens where he cultivates brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, pea, mustard, bitter gourd, beans, pea, bitter gourd, potato, papaya and pumpkin. Apart from that, he has a 0.4 ha area of plantation of guava, mango, litchi, lemon and banana. The diversified farming in his farm help him reducing the cost of cultivation as the by-product of one enterprise can be used as raw material for another enterprise. He uses different scientific propagation technique for his vegetable and fruit garden. He has cultivated paddy for his home consumption and selling in the market. Success Stories of NE States | 64 Evidence: He received ‘Krishi Ratna’ award from the Govt. of West Bengal. He is leading a comfortable life and a great source of inspiration for his fellow farmers. 35. Profitable watermelon cultivation in Udalguri, Assam Situation: Mr. Premol Mochahari, of Gersong village of Udalguri district was a marginal farmer of paddy and vegetables. He was struggling for earning living due to the financial crisis. Response: His farm was selected for a demonstration on watermelon in an area of 0.2 ha by ATMA, Udalguri development block. The variety of watermelon used in the demonstration was ‘Stella’ which was giving good yield in his farm. From the demonstration, he came to know about the management aspect of watermelon cultivation and its marketing potential. Result: In the next year of demonstration, he has earned a net profit of Rs. 90,000/- from his 0.7 ha of watermelon area. Later on, Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

Now, he is very much motivated to increase the area of watermelon cultivation up to 6 ha of land in the forthcoming season. Evidence: Now he is leading a comfortable life with his family and become a source of inspiration for many unemployed youth. 36. Rearing of sheep getting momentum in Tripura Situation: Md. Najir Ali of Kadamtala block of North Tripura was a very poor farmer who was earning his living through rearing of sheep. However, the rearing of sheep is much easier than goat as they reported to be roam in groups, easy to feed and good for hilly terrain. They need cool climate for rapid growth and produce good quality meat production. The demand for meat and its pricing is almost same with that of goat. Response: Keeping in view the importance of sheep rearing, the PD ATMA of North Tripura District has set up a farm school comprising of 20 progressive farmers in Kadamtala block. Md. The veterinary department of the area is also extending technical guidance towards health care, sanitation and feeding needed for scientific rearing of sheep. Result: Now, Md. Ali extended his farm by increasing the numbers of sheep to 26 numbers. He has become very successful although it is a new business entity in the locality. Evidence: It is expected that the Kadamtala area will become a zone of sheep production with the active leadership of Md. Ali and support from veterinary department. 37. Successful ridge gourd grower in Amguri, Assam Situation: Mr. Abhijit Gogoi of Amguri development block in Sivsagar district of Assam was unemployed youth who used to pass time gossiping with his friends. Response: He was selected to involve in various agricultural practices and trainings under ATMA, Amguri block. In the year 2011-12, his field was selected for Ridge Gourd demonstration under ATMA. The demonstration was conducted in 0.4 ha of land and technical interventions were showed in case of seed treatment, spacing, fertilizer application and plant protection. Many of the youth from the neighbouring area were participated in the programme. Result: He got a yield of 51.2 Qtls of ridge gourd from his 0.4 ha plot which helped him to earn a profit of Rs. 78,000/-. Followed by the success he got in farming, he replicated the technology in the next year which gave him more income than the earlier. Recently, he was sent to Punjab and Haryana from ATMA Amguri block for exposure visit. Many unemployed youths are now coming up to take vegetable cultivation as enterprise in nearby area. 38. Profitable off season vegetable in Bishalgarh area of Tripura Situation: Mr. Nihar Das, a 35 years old vegetable farmer of Golaghati Panchayat of Bishal garh area of th Tripura is a 12 passed out who was struggling for earning for his joint family from his traditional way of vegetable cultivation. Response: Things begin to change for him when he got training under ATMA on off season vegetable cultivation. He was given a poly house as assistance from ATMA with technical guidance to Extension Education Institute (NE Region), AAU, Jorhat-13

Success Stories of NE States | 69 incorporate valuable summer vegetables. He has learned about the neem based insecticides and use of trichoderma card and pheromone trap as a measure of pest control. Result: Presently, he is growing cabbage, cauliflower, chilli, brocolli, knolkhol, bottle gourd, bean, brinjal and bitter gourd during summer season with the help of polyhouse to make early release of vegetable to get higher price. He has appointed 5 labours on regular basis and earning a profit of Rs. 25,000/- per month to meet his family expenditure. Evidence: With the 1 ha of land occupied by vegetable cultivation, Mr. Das is leading a comfortable life and became a source of inspiration for all other farmers. Scented lemon cultivation in Madhupur area of Tripura Situation: Mr. Harekrishna Bawl of Madhupur area of Bishalgarh subdivision is a progressive farmer of scented lemon. Earlier, he started farming with winter vegetables which was not sufficient to meet the family expenditures. Response: He attended one training on scientific cultivation of lemon organized by ATMA. There he learned the techniques of selection of planting material, different propagation methods and scientific management of lemon garden. Result: He applied his learning in 1 ha area of his land to earn successfully Rs.1,50,000/- annually. He applied different propagation methods like cutting, layering and seed stock rising to maintain the quality planting stock in his farm. He is also cultivating banana as an inter crop to add additional income. Off season vegetable cultivation: A success story from Dhupabor, Assam Situation: Mr. Prafulla Barua of Dhupabor block of Sivsagar district is a progressive farmer who is 54 years old and lives with his two th children and his wife. Right after the 10 standard, due to his family problem he took agriculture as his livelihood. He started his cultivation with the traditional varieties of paddy in his 1 ha of land which is not sufficient to meet the family expenditure. He has a horticulture garden in the backyard of his household and a small pond to take care of his few nos. of ducks. Response: Things begin to change for him after he met ADO of his block. He took part in many training and demonstration programme organized by CSS- ATMA of his block. He learned the technique of producing off season cultivation of vegetables by attending a training programme organized by ATMA. He was also provided one power tiller and a pump set from the department of agriculture. Result: Mr. Barua is earning a lot from the off season cultivation of winter vegetables. Presently, he is having 5 nos. of milch cow, 10 nos. of goat and 2 boxes of bee hive. The annual income of Mr.Barua is around Rs. 5 lakhs with which he could manage his family and educated his children up to graduate level. Successful Mix Farming in Kamalkpur, Tripura Situation: Mr. Kritimohon Singha, a science graduate of Halahali panchayat of Kamalpur area of Tripura is a progressive farmer who is doing mix farming. Earlier he was doing farming in a traditional way to meet the minimum of his family expenditure. Response: He got several training from the ATMA on SRI techniques on rice and production of winter and summer vegetables. He applied all his learning in his 2.5 ha of land following both traditional and scientific way. Result: He has successfully grown 2 season rice following SRI techniques. He could harvest 8-10 Qtls of rice per 0.16 ha of land. He has made one vermi-compost unit on his own and developed an indigenous organic formulation to apply effectively in his farm.
