INDIGO DESIGN AWARD 2018 366 WINNER 60’s Farewell Tour University of Alberta https://www.valeriedamen.comIn celebration of Fern Snart — U of A’s previous Faculty of Education dean — steppingdown from her position, the Office of the Dean coordinated a 60’s themed farewelltour in her honor. With graphic stylization inspired from the 60’s and the Beatles, Ihand-rendered playful typography in the form of a butterfly and experimented withthe construction of a psychedelic pattern. Butterflies symbolize transformation, change, and growth, so I thought it was an elegant way to represent Fern’s departure. The illustration was formatted for posters, invitations, and social media formats for both Edmonton and Calgary events. • Awards: Silver in Lettering • Design Director: Valerie Damen • Client: Faculty of Education, University of Alberta

To enter the competition we hadto make a video application. Since our website is based on clean design and minimalistaesthetics, one of the most common comments was that it looks simple. “Simple” soundslike it was simple to make, so we based our video on this insight that clean design is easyto accomplish. Designing our website, winning SOTD, creating this video and winning thesecond competition wasn’t simple. But we take it as a compliment if it appears to be so :)

INDIGO DESIGN AWARD 2018 392 WINNER Skol 2018 Illustrations Barca http://www.wearebarca.comBeer in Brazil is not just a drink, it’s an cultural element. For years Brazilian beeradvertisements were limited to woman’s sexualization. Skol, one of the most popularBrazilian beer brands, has been rebranding itself as a more inclusive and progressivebeer. By doing this, it’s also reshaping a whole market in the process. In 2017, Tatil(communication and design agency) created a manual for Skol’s identity and invited BarcaStudio to develop their new illustration style. Skol communicates closely with Brazilianculture and habits, therefore it was extremely important for them to pick an Illustrationstudio based in Brazil that could translate themes like carnival, summer and music. Barcacreated modular illustrations that can be dismembered and combined for multiple usages:packaging, product, advertising, promotional materials, social media, etc. Using brand’scolors, the style also relies on fluid compositions that reflects Skol’s beer lightness.

INDIGO DESIGN AWARD 2018 394 WINNER Beautiful things don’t ask for attention Artsy Kiddo https://www.behance.net/ artsykiddoI find nature as a fascinating source of inspiration. I strongly agree with the famousquote “Beautiful things don’t ask for attention” from ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’.Unlike us humans these wild creatures do not strive for beauty nor attention. Theysimply be. I enjoy challenging myself by using the least number of lines and shapes tocapture the physical characteristics of different animals. I have a distinctive aesthetic, which incorporates various geometric shapes and patterns to depict nature andarranging them in a playful puzzle-like manner. My works are also visually influencedby foreign patterns that can be found in diverse cultures--traditional Asian patterns, African patterns, Aztec and Mayan patters, etc.

INDIGO DESIGN AWARD 2018 400 WINNER Illustrated Alphabet Carlo Cadenas https://www.behance.net/ gallery/36843365/Illustrated- AlphabetI decided to use 3D Software exclusively to give me the opportunity to establish lettersand numbers in space and composition of environment as a way to open up to a new path, different and with a different approach at a creative level. By establishing alternatingcolor compositions I was able to delimit several parameters and follow the exploratoryway of the form to give life to each one of the letters and numbers. Every main recognitionparameter was altered to seek to obtain the desired result. Each shape mutated with adistinctive unique trait in the symbols. Each material was selected with a previous relatedstudy to determine its use in the compositions. The lighting compound was determinantbecause it set the basis of variants that would give colored to the compounds. This isthe result of my experimentation for the Instagram challenge “36 Days of Type 2016”.
