About Us 5 Quirky, sustainable, durable, and laced with imagination, Joseph & Alexander is fashion with a conscious. Specialising in swimwear, Joseph & Alexander’s environmentally conscious pieces are designed to inspire the imagination and provoke curiosity. With each piece designed to spark an “educational conversation”, critical world issues and championing environmental action are at the heart of the brand. Operating consciously using recycled fabric from ocean plastics, eco- friendly ink and reusable packaging, each collection depicts awareness-raising narratives of minimising our environmental footprint, and having fun whilst doing so.

GIVING BACK Plastic Oceans Foundation was created in 2009 by Jo Ruxton and Sonjia Norman. As the first plastic pollution charity in the UK, Plastic Oceans UK’s mission is to raise awareness of plastic pollution as a call to action to protect our beautiful and vulnerable oceans. Working for five years on the first BBC Blue Planet series, Jo saw first-hand the growing impact of ocean plastic. The Foundation embarked on an ambitious project to create the definitive feature-length film with the world’s 6 leading scientists and conservationists, to reach as many people as possible. That ambition was realised with the release of A Plastic Ocean in 2017, to international acclaim and awards.

With over 300 million tonnes of plastic produced globally 7 each year, 8 million tonnes are reaching our oceans. We still have a great deal to do. Plastic is an important material in our lives, but it doesn’t belong in our precious oceans. In support of this awesome foundation, Joseph & Alexander have created two designs highlighting plastic and the effect it has on the ocean. Not only do these pieces tell a story, but they are made from plastic bottles that have been recycled into fabric! Joseph & Alexander will donate 10% of annual profits to support Plastic Oceans UK Foundation.

SS20 J&A introduce a full collection for the entire 11 family from our mama and me to dad and son. Keeping in theme with our ethos our inspiration behind the designs all stem back to the ocean, environment and nature. Our aim is spark an educational conversation through our visual designs and production methods.

“Heavyweight” J&A x Saif Chilmiran 32 Plastics made up 10% of global solid waste. With this in mind, J&A joined forces with artist and environmentalist, Saif Chilmiran with the creation of a limited edition design titled “Heavyweight”. Over the last 30 years, more than 20 million bottle caps and lids were found during beach cleaning activities around the world. It’s a sad fact that consumers leave behind 80% of the plastic bottle caps on the beach

Chilmiran shares his inspiration behind the 33 design, “The spots represent plastic bottle caps, which are placed above and beneath the turtle to depict the issue of trash disposed in the oceans and the upcoming pile. How many spots will fall above the turtle? Although plastic is light, it’s forever and that’s a “heavyweight” the next generations will have to carry.” Saif Chilmiran, who grew up during the economic boom of Abu Dhabi, was part of a multicultural underground ‘Punk’ scene developed by diverse youth. The Emirates Landing collection uses recycled fabric derived from ocean plastics and eco-friendly ink in the textile designs. Onboard, Emirates provides sustainably made blankets for its Economy Class passengers on long-haul flights. Each blanket is made from 28 recycled plastic bottles.
