2020... Four magazines together... This time each group have their own edition. It has been really challenging for me to design four editions together. I thought of making each group's magazine unique in the design point of view, and finally I can only say 'somewhat I succeeded in finishing it'. I hope you will forgive if there is any flaws. And kids... I was delighted to see all of your creativity and your urge to contribute for your magazine. And really appreciate your interpretation of the concerns like plastic pollution, importance of our mother tongue, Delhi riots, cleanliness, and of course the coronavirus pandemic. These are only few. Also I'm glad to see all of your beautiful drawings. Our coordinators did a wonderful job. Appreciating all coordinators for their dedication to bring the maximum involvement of kids from their group. We can see their efforts from the number of articles and drawings. Big thanks to editorial board for their patience to check each article and providing feedback taking time out of their hectic schedule. Special appreciation to Rakhi Biju for her support in the design. And to all of you, Engage with our quarantine editions. Read, share and send your feedback... Dear Gurukulam team, Our ‘MAZHAVILLU', the fascinating collection of writings and illustrations that leave a huge impression on the minds of our little ones of Gurukulam is entering to another stage of its growth. It gives me great pleasure and pride that for the first time four groups of Tapas Gurukulam are publishing four separate magazines of their own. The goal of ‘MAZHAVILLU’ is not to make everyone an artist or a writer, but to give all the children the opportunity to showcase their creativity and to have a pl atform to reach out the same to others. Three magazines published last year have contributed immensely in this direction. Congratulations to all those who are behind this great achievement. Sure, this will be another golden crown for Tapas Gurukulam. No matter how much we admire the Chief Editor Divya Manoj's sincerity, talent and hard work. The role of each group coordinators are also commendable in this regard. Congratulations to the children, parents and all helping hands who supported in achieving this goal. Best wishes to ‘MAZHAVILLU’ - the beauty of colours among diversity to conquer even greater heights. We all know very well that such magazines are very effective and independent medium for sharing the thoughts, ideas and imaginations of our kids with others. Recently I heard from my father about the shocking news of three forest warden’s death on wild fire. The tribes were trying to extinguish the fire using green leafs. Really shocking right? Yes, it is from my state, Kerala. The fire was man made. They were trying to cut the trees, camp, and do some dirty business as per the report. Just imagine how dumb and cruel they are. Animals, birds, trees…burn alive. And finally the people those who are trying to protect the forest and wild life. (We humans misbelieve that only we love family and live for the family members. But here comes a real story of true love… Happened in 2019) Do you know some facts about the most family oriented bird in the world? Bird which loves and keeps its mate throughout its life. It is the hornbills. The interesting fact is that when lady hornbills put eggs in the holes made at the top of bigger trees and wait for hatching eggs, it closes the door leaving a small hole to get food. The male brings food and feed it through the small hole till the little ones comes out. WILD THOUGHTS After hearing the news of the manmade wild fire, I just looked back at the information of Late Mr.Baiju Vasudev, the famous guard of nature and forest and also about an incident related to hornbill. This happened in forest area of Trissur dt. Kerala in 2019. Baiju Vasudev used to steal things from forest and misused his wild life experience in his early ages, but he became a nature lover and protector of wild life after getting closer to it.
He suddenly realised that its lover and little ones are waiting for the food which the male hornbill was carrying in his beak. Humans killed him driving carelessly on his way back to his dear ones. Mr. Baiju started searching its home tree by tree with the help of forest wardens and his friends. Finally after the hard work of two days they found the home but they were at doubt about the life of the birds as it passed away two days earlier. They did not loss the hope. Using a tall ladder he started to feed them like the male do. Surprisingly, the food was received form the members inside. The whole team were happy. They continued feeding them. Finally the little ones came out. This news was widely spread everywhere and Mr.Baiju Vasudev became famous. But unfortunately he passed away due to heart attack in 2019. Friends don’t you see the irony, one side people loving the nature and trying to protect it as much as they can by putting efforts, turning their entire life for it and devoting their life for it. Other side some people trying to destroy it for their greed. Destroying the nature is somewhat committing suicide. This will destroy the entire echo system and slowly kills generations. If you want to see the beauty, if you want to enjoy the beauty of life or if you want to survive in this earth, if you want the next generation to live in this earth, protect the nature. We should protect ourselves. Thank you. One day he found the body of a hornbill near the road side, which was hit by some vehicle and he also found it holds some food in its beak. He was not happy and felt very bad. Adithya Arun Grade 7

T H E S T R E E T - S W E E P E R A broad ray of sunlight fell into an old hut waking up a man. He is very tired because of the work pressure he had. The hut looks like it’s not been maintained for years. Everything looks misplaced. The person’s name is John and he hate his job. His job is to keep the streets clean or in simple words, a Street-cleaner. He doesn’t like his job because of the way the people treat him. People treat him in a really bad way which even made him think that he is not a human being. According to him, most of the people sees him as a servant who doesn’t have any feelings and rights. He knows that there is no use of complaining as he thinks that no one cares.
Suddenly he heard someone shout, “Dad, I am leaving.” By hearing it, he came into reality. He realized that the sound came from his son who was about to leave for college. “Will you accompany me? ” Asked his son. John refused by saying that his friends will tease him if they find that your father is a street-sweeper. His son then left with a disappointed face. John realized that he was late and started getting ready for work. When he was about to leave and was closing the door, he heard someone say, “Hey Cleaner” in a teasing manner. John didn’t respond and started to walk. After walking for a while, he reached the street where he was supposed to clean. As he started cleaning, he noticed that many people purposely dropped their waste on the ground even though the dustbin was near thinking that he would pick it up. “What if I wasn’t there. The whole street would be dirty” thought John. As he started working more, he got tired and went to a nearby shop for some water, the moment he entered the shop, the shopkeeper told him to stand outside and he will give him what he wanted. John understood that it’s because of his job, the shopkeeper is not allowing him inside the shop. After his worktime, he reached his house and he decided to meet his manager with a resignation letter. He took rest for sometime and started walking towards the manager’s office. Just before reaching, he saw a professor who teaches his son. John understood that the professor was waking towards him.
“Is there any problem sir? ” Asked John as the professor reached near him. “Your son told me that you hate your job. Is that right?” Asked the professor. John replied by saying yes and also told him the reason why he doesn’t like his job. Professor responded by saying, “Every job has a value. It’s because of people like you the streets are kept clean and also you are helping to make our world a clean and tidy place. If sweepers like you weren’t there, then this generation would have to see a very unclean world. Cleaning the environment is something that everyone should be honored to do. I know that there are some people who treat you badly. Those are people who don’t know the importance of this job. There are many people who are facing hunger everyday because they don’t have a job. All I am trying to say is respect your job and be happy with what you have instead of complaining and yearning for more and being unhappy. Also you are very lucky to have a blessed child, usually kids have inferiority complex due to the low profile job of their parents but your son knows that you work hard for him and respects your job.\" John understood that he is very luck to be a worker and tore his resignation letter. Let us start by saying, I am the kind of person who only reads the ‘Tabloid!’ in a newspaper. Like there could be a huge picture of a chicken on the front page and all I will know is that Selena Gomez dyed her hair blue. I just hate reading newspapers. And I am sure that most of you agree (shhh… Don’t tell my parents !). Now, if you read a Tabloid or as people reading Khaleej Times will know as City Times, you will always notice a whole page dedicated to knowing your horoscope. Which I used to think was so interesting but the more I think about it, it doesn’t even make sense. It just assigns you a name, or “zodiac sign”, based on your birthday and pretends to predict your future. They're witches, you know. I’m not telling that you shouldn’t believe in it and it may make sense to you but not for me. So I'm not trying to offend anybody. This is just what I think. Back to what I was saying. These zodiac signs tell your personality and basically your life based on your birthday. It also gives you an element. I’m a Virgo, earth sign, and I still don’t understand why Virgos are called organized. YOUR HOROSCOPE IS TO BLAME FOR WHY THINGS WENT WRONG Devapriya Vinayan Grade 6
I'm not a person who believes in these but they are up to something. Wanna know why something bad happened, well ask your pesky little sign. Its funny how things go wrong based on when you were born. Once I had a really bad day and when I read the horoscope page it literally said that something bad might have happened. I was shocked. So all I wanna say is that, don’t blame your friends, don’t blame your parents, don’t blame anyone but the unknown troublemaker, your zodiac sign. It was meant to happen. They were on to you this whole time. But on a side note, if you can blame your zodiac sign for the bad things, then they should also take credit for the good things in your life. Just like everyone else in this world. Someone did something bad doesn’t mean they never did good. So I want to end this kinda true, never thought about write up by saying, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” DOLLY PARTON ~ I am the opposite of organized. Ok, let's leave all that behind. I wanna ask you a question. Have things gone wrong in your life? Im sure it’s a yes. Well, it's your sign to blame. If signs can predict your life, then its obviously the ones in charge of what happened.
Well I’m sure that everyone was told to stay in your house. I was so happy when they announced that there was NO SCHOOL. But slowly, it started boring and I wanted to go to school and meet every one. Alaas.. Then I started my time pass activities. I tried lots of different things like trying nail art and much more. It was so frustrating to not go out anywhere. That’s when an idea clicked onto my mind. I could do something adventurous that I had not really experienced before and that made me run to my Mom and tell her that I wanted to cook something “delicious”. Finally I convinced her and she gave me 3 hours to make something tasty. I wanted to prove it to my Mom that cooking is simple and anyone could do it. I looked up many recipes in google and decided to make a smoothie. MY ADVENTURES IN THE KITCHEN!! I started making a peanut butter banana smoothie. I battled with different fruits and powders. In the end it did not come like what it was shown in the internet.
I assured myself that it’s not always in the looks but in the taste. I served it in big glasses with straws and a banana on the side of the glass. My mom tasted it and stopped my dad from drinking and told that it was terrible. I was sad but being it was my first attempt I convinced myself that it is okay to get such results in the initial try. Next day I woke up quite early and since it was the weekends my parents were still asleep. I decided that I would make tea and sandwiches for them to make it up for yesterday. I heated the water and poured the milk. Now it was time to put the coffee powder. I saw two containers which said coffee powder. I took one without thinking twice and poured 2-3 spoons I added the sugar and put it aside after pouring it into the glass. Then I made cereal for myself. I thought it would be a good idea to make sandwiches since possibly nothing could go WRONG? That’s when my parents woke up to all the loud noises. They were shocked as well as a bit furious that I made something again. I told them I just made tea, cereal and two sandwiches. They were relieved. My dad took a sip of my coffee while my mom took a bite of the sandwich I had made. First sip my dad screamed and ran to the wash basin to wash his mouth.
It seems that the containers did not have coffee powder and the one I chose had coriander powder, no wonder it had an odd color.. I was told that if I ever came inside the kitchen, my mom would chop my hands off. That was definitely not what I wanted to hear alaas ... In the afternoon my parents went to take a nap while I was watching TV. I got pretty bored so I decided that I would surely make something in the kitchen. It didn’t turn out as such a good idea. Well I thought it was harmless to make something I had done before. So I decided to make a milkshake since we had all the ingredients and I knew how to make it. I finally made it. I was pleased that I had made such a tasty strawberry milkshake and this time I tasted it as well, so I knew it was good. I looked for a cherry to put on the top as it thought it would look grand. But I found a container with white creamy product. I took since it looked like whipped cream and put it in the milkshake as a topping. I also added the cherry as well. Now I served it to my dad. My mom woke up and found out I had made something in the kitchen and yes she shouted at me and was as mad as a pressure cooker. I think she felt pity for me because she actually tried it!! I noticed frowns on their faces. My dad said the milkshake was great but not the topping !I was curious and tasted my topping and that’s when I understood that I might have just poured mayonnaise. What a crazy person I was! I was upset with the fact I could make nothing tasty that people would actually eat.
My mom felt sorry and told me that we will bake sponge cakes together tomorrow. I was so happy to get another chance and this time I was determined to make the right thing. Next day I baked the perfect sponge cake with the help of my mother. I was delighted and everyone liked it!!! I had finally proved that I could bake something properly and this time. I did not put any toppings. I was sure my parents were convinced I could also make delicious food. I was filled with glee when my dad came up to me and said “ I cannot believe you took three days to make something good, I used to make so many good things at the age of 7!! . You know what; I will show you how it’s really done and make some cupcakes.” Well me and my mother got out of the kitchen. 1 hour later, my dad bought the cupcakes and served it on the table. It looked really good and both of us were surprised that my dad cooked so well. We took a bite of it and spit it out instantly. We found out that he had put 4 spoons of SALT instead of SUGAR. Well now I realized where I got my cooking skills from!! Although it was such a dramatic and funny experience, it was adventurous and great…. So I recommend you all to cook something if you are bored at home but make sure to follow the instructions and NOT be a chef like ME!!! Alida Maria Grade 6
It was a rainy morning in 442 court street, Birmingham. Dan was lounging about in a sofa. Suddenly Ronald came bursting through saying that he found a case to solve. About 6 hours back a murder took place in Taunton it was the 5th murder of that kind in the week. Dan said “ Is it the killer who gives notes before committing a murder? \" “Yes, how did you know?” “Norris phoned me and told me to pitch in. But, I did nothing.” \"Well if we don’t stop this killer, that guy might go on a rampage. ” Dan said. “ Then let us go and investigate Ron.” Without further delay the duo reached Taunton to examine the body. From the crime scene Dan was able to make out that the murdered was Christie Daniels a dart throwing expert. He deduced that: The victim was right handed. There was no sign of blood, marks or bullet holes. It might have been a poisoning. It was a poisoning. The poison was a Neurotoxin. Detective Dan: A Dart Attack
The killer is an expert at aiming and darts. Before leaving the crime scene Dan found a dart. It was a dart with a liquid dripping. Dan immediately went to the forensic department and found out that the same neurotoxin was dripping out from the dart. Dan went home and showed this to Ronald. He made another deduction. From this basis Dan said “ It might be easier to catch our perpetrator\". There are 16 dart clubs in and around Taunton. If we check all these clubs out, we have a chance to find the killer. Is the killer always leaving a single word in his notes? “Yes, some words like short, ugly, useless, dumb and worthless.” “Wait a minute, these words, hmmm. Eureka, I got it! The killer is a dwarf.” Ronald said “ Tell me \" “Yes. These words describe a dwarf perfectly and there are only 2 dwarves in the whole of Taunton.” “How do you know that?” ” I checked the police records of the Scotland Yard. We must hasten.”
Dan immediately phoned the police chief, Norris. By midnight, Dan, Ronald and Norris questioned the prime suspect. The suspect said he had no connection whatsoever as he is one - eyed, can’t see properly. However before meeting the next suspect a dart was shot near Dan’s head it was missed by a few inches. The next moment was a chase and catch. The dwarf was caught red handed with a poisoned dart and a shooter. Ronald asked “Why commit these murders?” The dwarf replied “I did these killings because I wanted to enter the dart clubs but the leaders of the clubs always mocked me so I decided to extract my revenge.” Dan said. “ All in a day’s work.” -Sudev Santhosh Grade 9

Get out of the house (not during covid-19) Leave the place where you are studying in order to re-energize. Go alone and spend time with nature to relax your mind. Spend some time thinking about something other than your exam. Do something you enjoy Hobbies can help you relax. Put aside the books and take a few minutes or up to an hour to put your stress towards an activity you enjoy. Reduce your phone usage. Researches shows that overuse of mobile phones not only cause stress, but can also have a negative impact on your mental health. That’s all! I really hope this helped.
