Mission San Cayetano de Calabazas, also known as Calabasas, is a Spanish Mission in theSonoran Desert, located near present day near Tumacácori, Arizona. The JESUITS in Japan had to maintain economic self-sufficiency because they could not expectstable and sufficient payment from their patron, the King of Portugal, the king allowing theJesuits to engage in trade with Japan. Such economic activity can be found in the work of FrancisXavier, the pioneer of Catholic missions in Japan, who covered the cost of missionary workthrough merchant trading. From the 1550s to the 1570s, the Jesuits covered all necessaryexpenses with trade profits and bought land in India.Their officially recognized commercial activity was a fixed-amount entry into the Portuguesesilk trade between Macau and Nagasaki. They financed to a certain amount the trade associationin Macau, which purchased raw silk in Canton and sold it in Nagasaki.The JESUITS did not confine their commercial activity to the official silk market but expandedinto unauthorized markets. NAGASAKI is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefectureon the island of Kyushu in Japan. It became a centre of Portuguese and Dutch influence in the16th.
