Learning Objective: To define global dexterity and utilize it effectively in various areas of life to become better global citizens. Some characteristics of good Global citizenship are tolerance, respect, and mutual understanding. Definition of Global Dexterity Author Andy Molinsky’s book, titled Global Dexterity, defines this as the ability to adapt our behaviors when dealing with different cultures than our own, to give due respect while remaining authentic to ourselves in the process. The adaptation can be frightening and a daunting task, as it takes us outside of our comfort zones. Being in an uncomfortable situation can make someone feel awkward or insecure.

Learning cultural differences Do the research utilizing the internet checking for language, customs, monetary exchange, food, etc. Make part of your research finding what may be offensive to that particular culture. Locate and use the US embassy website for country-specific resources and information and note any special events or holidays that may be occurring during your visit. Self-assessment for comfort level Utilize the information obtained and imagine yourself in the place of the person representing the host country. If there is anything that you are uncomfortable with, make a note of it. Think about foods, gestures, or customs. Being empathetic will allow you to walk in someone else’s shoes as a means of comprehending their way of life. Identify areas that make you uncomfortable and try to find an alternative that will allow you to maintain your identity and personality while showing respect. Step outside of our comfort zone In some cultures, foods that are offered as a token of respect, it may not be palatable to you or you may be allergic, how can you handle this in a manner that shows respect and does not offend? Knowing what your boundaries are will allow you to step beyond your comfort zone and modify your response to the gesture and prepare yourself to honor your host without losing yourself in the process. A cultural ambassador can be useful in preparing you on how to respectfully decline the food item without offense.
Make the behavior your own. During uncomfortable situations you can be awkward which can be seen as being fake and inadvertently offending others. You cannot be prepared 100% prepared for every situation however, if you have tested the limits of your comfort zone then you can face these situations with more preparedness thereby taking away some of the insecurity and awkwardness of the situation. You will know how to make sincere apologies and continue with the dialog. Utilize a cultural mentor. We can read, research, and prepare for some interactions with other cultures, and a cultural mentor or guide can be invaluable in educating and navigating the cultural intricacies. Mentors can be peers who live and work in the country that you are visiting or persons in the same field or area of study. Develop a forgiveness strategy. Despite thorough preparation and having the best intentions, things can go wrong, acknowledge this and should it happen, you can be comfortable with apologizing, correcting the action if possible, and continuing with the dialog. A sincere apology may counteract an ignorant offense. Accept the mistake and use it as a learning moment.
Global citizenship Key thoughts This global dexterity method shared by Andy Molinsky has proven invaluable to me as I utilize it in my work, school, and personal life. I feel much more prepared to go into meetings with my clients from various cultures, genders, ages, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. I have an interactive method or tool that I can use to bridge the gap. When preparing for the interaction I refer back to his book and Mr. Molinsky's website.
