I am delighted to introduce the 2016 Airbus Global University Partner Programme Annual Report. Tom Enders - Chief Executive Officer, Airbus Looking back over this year of activity and significant achievement, I see how the AGUPP has evolved apace with our company-wide commitment to innovation and change. Aviation and aerospace have entered an era of unparalleled technological innovation. Exponential advancement in the tools that are now at our fingertips is unlocking exciting possibilities and opportunities. All of this requires us to challenge traditional ways of working and thinking, including how we develop the next generation of talent. The Airbus Global University Partner Programme is a cornerstone of our ambition to develop future leaders within our sector. In facilitating international cooperation with educational institutions around the world, together we have created a fertile04
space for mutual learning and exchange. As a company with truly internationalroots, we understand instinctively that the people with the skills and experiencethat we need are to be found across the world. This year, we have seen our common AGUPP interests come to fruition with theinspirational Airnovation Summer Academy, truly a unique chance for students toprovoke the status quo, try new ideas, question everything and ultimately advancetheir knowledge of how to innovate, and how to keep innovating.Tomorrow’s innovators will change lives. Their boldness, passion and persistencewill take us to places that we can only dream of today. Their resilience will helpthem overcome the challenges we face now and those we cannot yet even predict. They will reinvent every single part of the industry as we know it today. And theywill be life-long learners.New talent not only provokes the old order, it also constantly evolves. There is nobetter way to enable such dynamic progression than by seeking exchange, spreadingideas and discussions – the core mission of AGUPP. Thank you all for your energyand your contributions this year. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
Reflecting on a busy and productive year for the Airbus Global University Partner Programme, one thing is clear – we achieved a great deal in 2016! This includes our new name, which is in line with Airbus Group's rebranding as Airbus, and also our worldwide remit. We are now seeing the first graduates, in disciplines ranging from aeronautics to cyber security and computer science, who have directly benefitted from AGUPP activities. They will enter the workplace with a new understanding of not just of Airbus, but of the interconnected and interdisciplinary ecosystem of engineering. Here’s a short summary of the 6 main AGUPP priority areas, as we look ahead to 2017. ACADEMIC COOPERATION One of the main objectives in creating this network was to share our current and future competence needs with universities. To this end, we shared a draft of the ‘Engineer of the Future’ white paper at the Singapore event in February. Since then, we have updated this with input from our engineering colleagues across all divisions. INNOVATION We are sure that you will all agree that the Airnovation Summer Academy in July was a real highlight of 2016, especially the talented students who joined us for a memorable week in Delft. This event was the culmination of our AGUPP focus on innovation, and a true partnership with both the Campus Team members who made it happen and our valued collaborators at Airbus Corporate Innovation, especially Gary Wicks. NETWORK DEVELOPMENT Focusing on the next stages of the growth of our network, we have identified key institutions that fit our requirements, and will now work with them to develop partnerships.06
COMMUNICATIONS From our existing members, we have recently launched a call for new Ambassadors and look forward to working with an expanded team of champions to develop our campus activities. And we remind you that the AGUPP survey is your chance to share your feedback with us – we are exploring all the opportunities that the partnership offers, both in traditional subjects as well as those that are new to Airbus. CAMPUS ACTIVITY You can see highlights of our 2016 Campus Team activities and achievements on page 14 – a truly global round-up of exciting events, collaboration and learning opportunities for students over the last 12 months. INTERNSHIPS We appointed a project leader to work on this important area in 2016. Several proposals will be shared with our university partners early in 2017.In response to your requests for an online community, , where you can exchange andinteract virtually, we recently launched the AGUPP Forum. This is now available toeveryone directly involved with AGUPP across the world. We urge you all to make useof this new resource – it’s YOUR space to exchange, ask questions and network witheach other! This year, AGUPP has moved from consolidation to significant activity andachievement. We look forward to taking the next steps with you in 2017, and to seeingmany of you at our event from 19-21 April in Toulouse, France.Hayley O'Rourke - Campus Team Coordinatorand Kimble Woodworth - Programme Coordinator
At Airbus, we remember always that ‘Diversity is in our DNA’. Jacqui Chan - Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Airbus What will the workforce of the future look like? As digitalisation and other fast-moving technological changes reinvent our world, so too will our people evolve. The aerospace engineers, innovators and designers of the future will learn and work in different ways, ready to take on the challenges and opportunities that the future holds. Our roots may be European but our reach is global – today half the world is connected and protected by Airbus solutions. Our ambition as a company is to achieve the extraordinary; to connect the world and beyond. By harnessing different points of view and new ideas, an inclusive culture will enable us to achieve all this and more. Recognising the value that diversity brings, we train our people to ensure that08
everyone has the right skill sets to create an inclusive and engaging climate, wherediverse teams and great ideas can flourish. We will find new and different views and ideas in our universities and institutions, who in turn are filled with students who have been inspired at secondary and primaryschools to pursue STEM subjects. Yet, whilst we can be proud of the changingdemographics of STEM graduates over the years (20% of engineeringgraduates are now women), this picture is not reflected in those who actuallypursue a career in STEM - nearly 40% of the same engineering graduatesnever enter the profession.Students must remain consistently engaged with how STEM skills can be applied toshared problems and common goals with regular opportunities to put their learninginto action on real-world projects. Without this positive reinforcement throughout theireducation, we will lose promising candidates before they ever get the chance tocontribute to our industry. As STEM students walk the corridors of our institutions, listen to their lecturers and readdepartmental publications, do they see inspirational and diverse figures and role models?I encourage you to use every opportunity to inspire the belief that a purposeful careerin STEM-related areas is possible for all.We are committed to creating a working environment where everyone can be theirbest, and I invite both our university partners and our graduates to demonstrate howwe’re all challenging norms, empowering our people and changing the portraits onour walls - the faces of our future workforce!
2016 was the year of the ‘Airnovators’! The first Airbus Airnovation Summer Academy took place over 5 action-packed days in July 2016 at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). This experience was an excellent way for 40 high-calibre students from 17 universities to get first-hand experience of Airbus’ leading edge approach to innovation. We created an environment that closely resembled a real-world innovation accelerator. Over the week, students rapidly developed four high potential concepts in response to real world opportunities and needs, supported by mentors and experts from across Airbus. The feedback from the students has been phenomenal, demonstrating the value and contribution of the Airnovation Summer Academy to strengthen Airbus- university-student relationships. Gary Wicks, Airbus Corporate Innovation10

WHAT YOU MOST ENJOYED…“Spending quality time with really friendly and communicativepeople - the 1-2-1 interactions in the social events were a key to creating a personal link between us as a community.” “The opportunity to meet and network with both Airbus and University representatives. It was also great to gather feedback from both on the Innovation Summer School workshop as we can make sure that both the academic and industry needs are taken into account.” “A good mix between different activities/topics, the mix between talks, group activities and visits, the networking opportunities, and of course, the location!” “Getting into 1-2-1 conversations with the University Professors was a real highlight. We talked about a massive range of technical and educational topics and really bonded on some core issues. The Thursday morning session was the working highlight as there was a spark of invention and creativity that I always enjoy.” “The event represented the global reach of the programme and our shared commitment.”

We are updating the Engineer of the Future white paper to include input on the required competencies of Airbus engineers from all three divisions of our business. The next published version will then bring together both the university perspective, the latest literature and research on the topic, direct input on Airbus’ needs, as well as the company’s vision of future talent requirements. Additionally, it will include real-life case studies from Airbus to show how the ideas set out can be effectively implemented. We look forward to sharing the revised Engineer of the Future white paper with you in the coming months.16
