PROJECT AIM PROJECT AIM project ‘tao’ aim to rejuvenate hickory building mainly the interior to provide a more pleasant view without replacing entirely with new design. project ‘tao’ focuses on respecting the spirit of the place through remaining some of the existing design or materials PROJECT INTRODUCTION chosen site was located at hickory situated on penang hill, malaysia. a guesthouse with long history since british colonization and fell into the hands of the japanese due to its strategic location to be used as a scouting point for harbour. the name of this guesthouse was dulce domum and changed to hikari by the japanese which is the name that the guesthouse used today- hickory. the name hickory brings the meaning of ‘light’. 1

DESIGN STATEMENT INSPIRATIONAL POEM “everything is bound to fall” “fall is bound to a new existence” “everything has no totality and oblivion” peom above were made based on hickory’s history where this building was first occupied by a local tin miner in 1930 and was sold to the second local due to economic crisis back in the 40’s. after being occupied for a period, the place was taken over by the japanese in the 1942 due to its strategic location, the owner was put into prison. the name of the place was changed from Dulce Domum to hikari which is known as hickory today. after the end of japanese colonization the place was left stranded until MR raj, the current owner bought it back in 2013 and developed it into a tourism spot. the poem was insipred by the every end of ownership of the building where the ownership does not stop and the legacy of the building was continued by every owner to make it a better place. there are no complete story which can be unfold by one onwership as it was passed down to different owner and there will be no oblivion in the story as every ownership has its own story that will be unfold by themselves. DESIGN STATEMENT “totality and oblivion” “tao” is abbreviation for totality and oblivion. totality means completeness while oblivion means nothing. humans is seeking for completeness but will not ever reach to it as there are no perfectness in this world. adequate is the term that has become the completeness in human’s heart. there will be no perfectness but only adequate which the rest that humans is seeking for will be balance out by oblivion. oblivion is the nothingness that humans is seeking for that will never be found. the imperfectness can be said as the oblivion in our life. yet the oblivion in our life is the key factor to balance out the completeness in us. oblivion is important to reveal the state of gratefulness in us. there has to be have darkness to reveal the light, just like in life, got to have sadness once in order to know when the good times come. 2
