Happy VSatcaarttioHnerMeemories Celebrating 25 Years! Since the Summer of 1992 Sweethaven Resort is where beach excursions begin, snowball fights breakout and hayrides happen. We’ve hosted hundreds of family reunions, weddings and corporate retreats. We’ve welcomed young lovers and watched them return as partners and then parents. We delight in noticing how much the little ones have grown year after year. We have become a home-away-from-home for people with pets. We’ve celebrated countless birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, retirements, commencements and engagements. But, it’s the quiet moments, a picnic in the treehouse, a walk to the beach, making s’mores under a starry sky that make the happiest memories. It’s amazing how quickly 25 years has flown by. This year treat yourself and your loved ones to some happy memories at Sweethaven Resort. The Heart of Harbor Country 9517 Union Pier Rd., Union Pier, MI 49129 269-469-0332 ≈ sweethavenresort.com

CRAFTSMANSHIP Handmade craftsmanship still thrives right here in Harbor Country. Center of the World Woodshop Showroom offers a rich collection of locally made furniture and home Lorraine and Terry Hanover accessories, along with a custom design service for furniture and cabinetry. ~ Center of the World Woodshop This year, owners Terry and Lorraine Hanover celebrate forty years in business – years in which Terry has built a solid reputation for designing and creating heirloom quality furniture in the Craftsman tradition. “I love sketching a solution to a need a client is expressing, and hearing them say, ‘That’s exactly what I want!’” said Terry. When he creates a piece of furniture, it’s a hands-on affair, from details such as hand- cut dovetails, leaded glass, inlays, tiles and hand carving, to hardwoods selected to showcase their natural beauty. “Wood has a warmth and beauty that can’t be equaled, he explained. “My job is simply to enhance the natural beauty it already possesses.” In their Harbert showroom, Lorraine displays Terry’s work along with pieces created by more than a hundred other artisans. “I’m proud of our collection” she said. “We represent some incredibly creative people.” The Hanovers are also dedicated to the environment and their community. Furniture made to last for generations, from sustainably harvested trees, minimizes their impact on the environment. An annual tree-giveaway replaces all those used by their shop. And every year, they organize and sponsor fundraising events to support the New Troy Community Center. Customers often wonder about the origins of their name. Terry’s shop is located in New Troy, which has been known as the “Center of the World” since 1860. A sixth-generation resident of the town, he is fond of quoting the man who first coined the name for a general store: “If you can’t find it at the Center of the World, seek no farther;” and, “Wherever you are is the Center of the World.” See ad on page 69.TRUSTWORTHY Tom Hemingway has been a realtor in Harbor Country for over a decade. As Tom Hemingway/Remax Harbor Country he specializes in lakefront and cottage properties stretching from New Buffalo to Saugatuck, Michigan. Along with his other business, Bluefish Vacation Rentals, he has developed a vast knowledge of income producing vacation homes. Tom was originally from Michigan, but lived in Chicago for many years. He bought his first cottage in Union Pier in 1997 and fell in love with Michigan all over again. He moved here full time in 1998 when he purchased an older resort with his partner and turned it into the Firefly Resort in Union Pier. How did he get into real estate? Tom said that he had a design business in Chicago and always had an interest in real estate. Once they sold the Firefly Resort, the natural step was into real estate. Tom felt that he was lucky to find Remax Harbor Country with Dan Coffey as the Broker. Since his other business is Vacation Rentals, Tom feels his knowledge of the second home market helps him find the right properties for his clients. He is also a developer, so his understanding of construction helps his buyers and sellers know how they can change an existing home to improve its value. He enjoys his freedom to make all of his own choices. “There is a lot of creativity involved in molding a business. It’s exciting,” he commented. Tom plans to continue to stay involved in the community and hopes to build another development in the future. See ad on page 91. They have a wide selection of homes to meet every vacation needand budget from one bedroom charming cottages to exceptional two to five bedroomproperties. Some of their listings are on Lake Michigan or have lake views, and mostare in within a short walk to the lake, beach or town. They have a tag line that says“You’ll have more FUN at our house.”John and Tom spent weekends camping at Warren Dunes State Park and visiting friends here in the mid 90s. Theyeventually bought a fixer-upper in Union Pier. They loved being here so much as it was a nice respite from theirChicago life, they eventually bought a mini resort; sold their home in Chicago’s “Bucktown”; and eventually settled inthis magical place year round.John had extensive hospitality experience with both the Sheraton and Hilton hotels in Chicago. He and Tom opened up John Natsisa resort and then started the vacation rental business. John felt that everything happened organically from there. “Tom ~ Bluefish Vacation has always been very interested in real estate, and is very customer focused, so it is not a surprise to anyone whoknows him that the vacation rental business and his real estate career would be a success,” John commented. RentalsJohn stated that they did not start off with this idea as their “master plan”, but the fact that they see this business form a 360 degree perspectiveis great for everyone. Not only do they rent fabulous vacation homes, but they sell them too. Their renters sometimes turn into buyers; theirbuyers sometimes decide to have them rent their homes; and on occasion if they go to sell, they consider them since they really know the homeinside and out – hence the 360 degrees reference.John said that their business is multi-facetted. On any given day it is different than it was the day before, and that is exciting. A huge factoris that they get to provide thousands of their customers with a wonderful vacation experience. He feels that they have found their “sweet spot”managing an inventory of around 50 to 55 homes, which is a perfect place to be. They have determined over the past decade that this is agood number to be able to fill the rental homes for their owners, manage and take care of the properties so that their renters have the bestexperience they can have, plus just a little free time for themselves.“Just to say that we realize living in a place like Harbor Country is a privilege for us. It is not always easy to be able to make it work in a townthat is very tourism driven, but over the past decade we see that changing. New businesses who work hard can really make it work here. Weare becoming more of a year-round destination, and that is good for everyone,” John added. See ad on page 52 & 53. harborcountry.org 9

He enjoys being hands-on with all of his projects and working closely with his clients. He listens to their wants and needs, visits the space and works around existing pieces and their budget. It is important to him to know how they live in their space. Are there children, pets, or do they entertain a lot? What is their style? Are they traditional, contemporary or eclectic? He goes over the blueprints, does furniture layouts and helps them with the selection of fabrics, rugs and accessories. “Most homeowners get overwhelmed and sometimes make poor choices that often result in costly decisions. HOMEMADE Colleen Froehlich of Froehlich’s is all about homegrown-homemade. Her business is currently undergoing a transformation that will beColleen Froehlich unveiled this spring. Her current location will be a coffee shop with a~ Froehlich’s full line bakery including pastries, cakes and doughnuts. Across the street, in the old Three Oaks Pharmacy building, will be a full process kitchen with a sit down dining and carry-out menu. Of course, she will still be offering her full line of preserves and pickles and catering services. Colleen grew up in a Mom and Pop grocery business in St. Joseph, Michigan that taught her the bounty and beauty of the area’s produce production. She got the retail food bug at an early age working side by side with her Grandpa and Dad and tried to get rid of it, but just couldn’t shake it off. Froehlich’s is close to where she grew up, but with more of a “small town” feel than St. Joseph. She feels that she is different from other similar businesses because all of her products are made in the store’s kitchen from scratch. Many of their products come from their own family farms and those of local growers. Colleen is all about making food that people enjoy. “This year my dream came true to be able to expand and do more of what I love – food and service – year round!” she commented.
