TECHknowledge 2019-2020 School Year, Boerne ISD Digital Learning Team RECAP

For the 2019-20 school year, the Digital Learning Team realigned its service structure to improve service and provide equitable support for all campuses. This new support model was designed after researching larger districts and their Digital Learning/ Educational Technology department’s approach to campus support. The details of the Digital Learning Support Model can be found here. In summary, the objective of the Digital Learning support model will: ● Ensure training delivery is consistent across all campuses. ● Provide teachers access to multiple Digital Learning Specialists during each campus visit to meet the needs of the teachers in both expertise and availability. ● Provide teachers the ability to schedule support, co-teaching opportunities and technology integration planning sessions with any of the Digital Learning Specialists in the district instead of access to only one DLS. ● Enable teachers to be exposed to a wider range of integration tools for various curriculum implementation on a more regular basis. ● Establish an environment to utilize the strengths and availability of each DLS to match the needs of campus teachers instead of an “on call” atmosphere. Leveraging CTCs Support at the campus level was also revamped and launched this year. The stipend role of Campus Technology Coach (CTC) was overhauled to better leverage campus-based teachers to assist with support and professional learning. Their title and duties were changed from “coordinator” to “coach” which shifted focus from inventory management to professional learning. Our recruitment process was changed with requirements to fully support Skyward and to offer a minimum of 6 hours of outside contract Professional Learning hours. The Digital Learning Team invests time in training and supporting the CTCs. Monthly meetings are required and communication is open and fluid on a daily basis. Nurturing Innovative Teaching As an additional form of communication, the DLS team began producing a district digital magazine called TechKnowledge. Inside each edition, we showcase 3 teachers who lead by example. They receive a Creosity Award (an award created by DLS team to symbolize the blending of CREATIVITY and CURIOSITY). Twitter kudos, shout outs, and “cheerleading” via email are a few ways we nurture these trend setters. Student Digital Readiness The DLS team helped transition courses in Tech Apps and Digital Literacy to increase rigor and relevance. Read the restructuring here. Additional efforts to enhance security and digital citizenship through assisting with student password changes from grades 3-12. Bringing in Resources The DLS team wrote TIG grants to BEF and received funding to bring emerging technologies to the district. Teaching with AR/ VR/ mixed reality experiences are helping to keep BISD a leader in innovative teaching. Resources to provide students opportunities to put real world experiences into the classroom environment.
