Area VIII not only has talented horses, we have horses that are able to do all kinds of great and wonderful things. One such horse is owned and loved by Sheri Dingman. This is her story of a very special little horse named “Drama”. Vintage Farms Hallmark Memory, also known as Drama, Since that time, we have made several hundred similar visits. 2019 FEI Driving World Championships By Mary Phelps It was a strong showing of pony power for the U.S. with Mary Phelps in the Pair Pony division and Leslie Berndl in the Single Pony division as they competed in the 2019 FEI Driving World Championships for Ponies, September 25-29, in Ászár-Kisbér, Hungary. Blast from the Past Special Feature (Published in the Feb ’99 issue) AMHR OPEN HALTER – HIDDEN OBSTACLE A New Class? Dr. Tom Allen Horse Dentistry Horse dentistry has been one of those things we’d rather not think about. It’s hard to get the vet to do it; we can’t see any reason for it in most cases; and we’ve got plenty of more obvious problems to con- sider in our horse care. It can, however, be more important than we realize, as this short poem illustrates, followed by some reasons that care of the horse’s mouth is being emphasized more and more recently. THE UNPLANNED OBSTACLE The young horse was so uptight being led through the night, approaching the obstacle course. His ears pricked forward, each step going toward that place where he’d try for top horse. Though he knew he was good at hurdling the wood, he could not help being meek because though they promoted him, his owners hadn’t floated him, so a sharp point was hurting his cheek. Sharp points form on the outside of the upper cheek teeth because these teeth are set wider apart than the lower ones, and they grind against each other as horses chew grass and hay. The points that form there are painful as they press against the inside of the horse’s cheek. It is not necessary to have a bit in the mouth for the point to be pressured into the sensitive tissue: the side of the halter or even hackamore or bosal puts pressure on the side of the horse’s face, causing irritating discomfort. Floating teeth [this can only be done effectively with a full-mouth speculum in place, allowing thorough inspection of the oral cavity, and in most cases, under light sedation] removes the points not only on the outer edge of the uppers, but also the inner edge of the lower cheek teeth, where sharp edges continually [24 hours daily] rub against the tongue. Horses that are under five hundred pounds in weight have more dental problems than larger hors- es because of overcrowding of the teeth. We see more retained caps [baby teeth], double rows of incisors [front teeth], crooked incisors, and eruption cysts [bumps on the side of the nose] because of the crowd- ed condition. Fortunately, we cab help most of these horses be comfortable and perform well – even live longer – if we begin to correct the dental problems early enough. The younger the animal, the softer their teeth and the faster they wear them into points. If we have our horses just to look at [many of us do – be- cause it makes up feel good], then we probably won’t be able to tell when points develop in their mouth. But if we are asking them to perform, we can see the effect of pain from points and cheek ulcerations sooner [as soon as three or four months after floating some horses]. The most common myth about horses is that they will show us when they have points on their teeth. If they have teeth that have not been effectively floated within six months, the animals have sharp points or worse. Tom Allen is a veterinarian who limits his practice to horse dentistry in several states. He can be reached at 1-888-603-5628. Questions on dentistry are welcome. Long distance charges will be reversed on return calls.
