Youth Committee By: Joanie Tamboe Greetings from your 2020 Youth Committee Coordinator! Our committee members have been working very hard to ensure our kids have a stellar year filled with tons of opportunities. We’ve been busy securing sponsorships and donations, planning events, and getting the word out to our Youth to join the FUN! I encourage parents and trainers to have your Youth Exhibitors explore the many award, contest and scholarship opportunities available through our website. From our T Shirt designing contest to our Essay Contest, you’ll find something for every child to participate in. By the way, did you know that a Congress or Nationals Class Sponsorship is only $25? That’s right $25! Sponsor your favorite class today by contacting me through Facebook Messenger or email [email protected] and we’ll get the ball rolling! Let’s all look forward to a great year with our Youth Exhibitors! Joanie Tamboe Youth Committee Chair Foundation Committee By: Phyllis Hopwood The committee would like to have feedback from members on both positive and negative thoughts and concerns regarding the foundation ponies. We would welcome comments and ideas on how to effectively promote the foundation ponies. The foundation pony is truly an ideal all around pony for adults and children. What suggestions can you give us to more effectively promote the foundation pony to the general public that may not want to show but want a good family pony? This is a market that we are not effectively currently promoting to as potential buyers. How do you feel on how the foundation ponies are being judged? Do you feel the judges are doing a better job at judging to the foundation breed standard? Are there any suggestions on how we can better educate judges and competitors on the breed standard? We would welcome anyone that would like to be on our committee. You can contact me by phone at 308-940-2447 or email at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you. Stewards Committee By: Rob Crater, Committee Chair Hello to the Membership of the ASPC/AMHR/ASPR; I hope this column finds everyone well, and we all hope that Spring is near! In Seattle it has been a long GRAY GRAY winter. As I write this, we just had our stewards’ clinic in Indianapolis on the 16th of February, and though a small turnout, the training and discussion was excellent. The key focus on our training has included hands on measuring exercises etc. As we move into the 2020 show season, I want to remind ALL STEWARDS AND EXHIBITORS, that we will once again be taking both last mane hair measurements, and whither measurements on all miniature horses. THE ONLY OFFICIAL MEASUREMENT is the last mane hair measurement, so please do not get confused. This is strictly for data collection about the possibility of moving toward measuring at the whither if a proposal is ever put forward. Your Stewards Committee works hard, and we do it collectively, to decide on clarifications of the rules when we are asked by the home office. Also, there is a lot of discussion between our group of how we move forward in progress in measuring and rule enforcement. For those of you that do not know who is on the Stewards Committee it is myself Rob Crater as the Committee Chairperson, Kim Seipp is the head of the Board of Governors, and she takes over the clinic duties when I am not available. Our other members are Mike Mounts, Mel Downs, Mary Hensley, Alene Rutledge and Pam Christopher. I want to personally thank each one of them for the many items I have had them review over 2019, and I while sometimes we didn’t agree on everything we are a good working committee. Now let’s all get focused on an amazing 2020 show season, and I ask you to please respect the rules of this organization along with the Stewards you will see at the shows this year. Best of Luck! 22 The Journal • April through July 2020

Driver of the Month - February Daniel Crider - Area V I started driving carriage at the AMHR Nationals in 2016, earlier in the year I was driving a two horse team in the chariot classes and added a John Deer wagon to my lineup. Jan Toby, an experienced team driver and close friend was giving me lessons on how to drive a team. She pointed out that my wagon was a type known as a “buckboard”, which was one of the vehicle types that was legal in the brand new carriage class. I had not even heard about carriage at that point. I said, “Sure why not carriage a try”. It is now one of my favorite classes. I have now won two National Reserve Championships in Team Carriage, one National Championship in Team Carriage, and one Reserve National Championship in Single Carriage. My wife, Carla has won a Reserve National Championship in Sunday In the Park. In 2018 we finally got a “real” carriage. A actual 1890’s pony Phaeton. We now use it with a single carriage horse, a two horse team and a four horse team. We also have a large number of children that show our horses. One of them, Miss Faith Bowen, learned to drive at age 6. When we heard there was a youth carriage class at some of the local shows Faith was dying to give it a try. Last year she won first place in a youth carriage class and even drove our carriage in a local Christmas parade. We love the carriage classes and plan to continue driving from now on. We are looking forward to seeing this expand at the AMHR National Show too hoping to see the carriage timed obstacle and maybe a youth class too. Small Pony VSE Feature Driver - Sheryl Raff The American Shetland Pony Club and your ASPC/AMHR/ASPR Carriage Committee sponsors ribbons to any CDE event that offers VSE, Small Pony or Both divisions at their venues. These ribbons honors those registered Miniatures and Shetlands that compete. I would like to take this time to say “Congratulations” to Ms. Sheryl Raff of Edgewood, Washington. Sheryl and her registered miniature, Flyin G Bonsais Tribute to Vegas won the VSE Training division at the Donida Farm Equestrian Center Show back on August 9,10,11, 2019. Here is what Sheryl had to say: “This is my second year doing CDE events. It is my first year with Flyin G Bonsais Tribute to Vegas as my partner. I use to show Pinto but love the combined driving events. I want to say “ Thank You” to the American Shetland Pony Carriage Committee for the sponsorship of the beautiful ribbons. This was my first time winning in Dressage and I was so thrilled and happy!” Again, Congrats Sheryl! 28 The Journal • April through July 2020
