Congratulations Alora! Iam so excited that my horse, AKS Aristocrats Invitation Only (Koal) received the 2018 Division A Youth Horse of the Year Award. I received Koal as a gift when I was 4 and he was 2 and I have been showing him since that time. We started with just Costume and Showmanship. Now our favorite classes are Jumping and Liberty. We are looking forward to trying Versatility this year. In addition to AMHR, I have been a member of the Mini Whinnies 4-H Club for the past 5 years. My club has over 50 kids with minis and we participate in clinics and a week long fair every year. The only year we haven’t shown at fair was when Koal got sick with Potomac Horse Fever and we almost lost him. I am also a member of the Blue Water Miniature Horse Club and ASPC/ AMHR Club of Western Michigan. I show my horse with my mom and we enjoy traveling around to different states for shows. I buy and clean used tack to resell in the spring to help pay for the shows. I love showing and I may want to become a judge when I am older. I hope other youth will try for this award this year. It is based on one horse and one handler (there’s an award for A & B). For each show you attend, your horse’s points are counted in three youth classes: Halter, Showmanship and your choice of a performance class. You keep track of your points and send them into the office at the end of the year. I am excited for the show season to start. I hope to see you at shows this year! Those are just a small example of the words written of the early years of Bud Soat within the American Shetland Pony Journal. Dominick and I have been friends with Bud and Shirley Soat for many decades, we have first handedly heard the stories of the time Chevrolet Automobile Company came to do a photo shoot of Bud and his amazing tiny horses, only for Bud to give them a real bonus and load small tiny horses in a convertible Cadillac and let them click away. Or the story of Bud and Shirley driving from Michigan to Hollywood California to delivery two miniature horses to a entertainer. Or the time Bud sold horses to Ringling Brothers Circus or to the time, or to the other time. The stories can go on and on. The history so rich. Bud Soat was the President of the Great Lakes Miniature Horse Club many times, Bud loved every aspect of having a community of fellow Miniature Horse breeders, exhibitors and lovers within the state of Michigan as well as Ohio and Indiana, as a club community we would gather and put on horse shows, have luncheons, Christmas Parties and Year End awards banquets, where Bud as our Granddad of sorts

Those are treasured moment Bud and Shirley dearly loved. One of my own personal memories of many was the time we were all at Roberts Arena at a Regional show and Bud and Shirley were unhitching their wagon and unharnessed the horses well one of the horses got loose and took off running free across Roberts Arena grounds and anyone who knows this location oh my, huge complex with a main road off in the not so far distance and a running horse, well there were golf carts following, people running, a horse most likely laughing at the people darting this way darting that Here are a couple words from others : Ray and Martha Ross Our friendship with Bud and Shirley Soat spands about 48 years. We first met them at a horse show at the Kentucky Horse Park. Bud was driving a pair of black and white pinto horses hitched to a pretty red show wagon. We competed with him that day with our sorrel horses and our green and white hay wagon. That was the beginning of many years of competition and friendship. Bud drove his team’s in many shows and win or lose he always left the ring with a hardy “Hip--ee” and RAN his team out of the ring!. What a ride! About three years ago, Bud offered to sell us his red show wagon. We brought it home and drive it each summer in our local Ohio shows. It brings back fond memories of our good friends Bud and Shirley Soat Debbie Grayson Our family met Bud through our mutual love of breeding miniature horses. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. We were blessed to know him and will always remember him with great fondness. Bud kept a treasure chest of miniature horse history so many times when we talked our goal was to compile the history so those in the future could know the road that was traveled to get the recognition of the tiny horse. What we have evolved to in the current world of American Miniature Horse Registry really has not been all that long ago and yet the simplicity of the journey when we all just wanted to enjoy these amazing little horses, have some laughs, tell some jokes, talk to new people and tell them about our horses, eat some good food and simply just have fun becomes lost in the world of cell phones, social media, blue ribbons. So when I ask if there is something you wanted to achieve, don’t wait do it. The words I tried to put together about Bud Soat are one friend trying to reflect on another friends impact on their life and a whole community that he had no idea that many years ago he would help create. Thank You Bud
