Carriage Committe Updates Submitted by Karen Shaw, Committee Chair Hello Carriage Drivers! As I write this column we will have completed our two national Shows, the ASPC/ASPR Congress and the AMHR National Show. Both national shows were well represented by our carriage drivers vying for those top honors. The Stake winners at both shows were awarded with beautiful monogrammed harness coolers with our Carriage logo along with Stakes Champion. I want to take this time to say thank you to all the clubs/shows who added the carriage division for both the ASPC and AMHR to your class line-up. The carriage division was one of the largest driving divisions across all eight areas of our association. Thank you drivers for your support and if this year was your first time giving carriage driving a try, we say thank you and hope you are hooked! Thank you to the many carriage sponsors out there this year who donated some beautiful crystal awards to be given away to those who were over-all high point carriage drivers. If you want to be a sponsor next year, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help you there. I know those drivers who were recipients were very surprised and enjoyed those beautiful pieces too. If your show didn’t offer the carriage classes and there is interest, please offer to sponsor those classes until they start building and gaining interest. Clubs and show managers if you need some insight on what to offer please don’t hesitate to drop me an email ([email protected]) and I’ll be happy to visit with you about it. As we wind down the 2019 show season, don’t forget to submit your Carriage End of the Year form for the High Point Carriage Driver Award in the ASPC and AMHR division. The form is up on the ASPC/AMHR Registry website (www.shetlandminiature.com). Please fill in the top of the form and you can also attach a copy of your horse’s performance record too. Those forms are due to me by December 1st, 2019….Karen Shaw 10500 CR 606 Burleson Texas 76028. Our goal for the future is to have a High Point Carriage driver from all eight areas that we can honor. If you have not joined the Carriage Facebook pages, ASPC/AMHR Members Carriage driving, the Small Pony-VSE or the All Things Carriage Buy, Sell, Trade, come on over and see what the ASPC/AMHR Carriage drivers are talking about. We have a great group who are full of helpful information so don’t be afraid to post your questions. If you have not tried carriage driving, don’t be afraid to jump right in. Come drive with us in 2020. As I close, I want to thank you all for your generous support this year; we have seen great numbers and beautiful turnouts all across our registry. Without YOU our members and carriage drivers we would not have grown as much as we had this year. Hat’s Off to you All! Till next time….Happy Driving and Happy Holidays! 40 The Journal • December 2019/ January 2020

Carriage Driver of the Month Bronagh Floyd Hi, I am Bronagh Floyd from Area 5. My husband five years ago we found a little green phaeton that I used always had an interest in antique carriage and their in Sunday In the Park and continued to drive Bucky in history. I wanted something different that a mini could the Country Pleasure classes at that time Area 5 added pull. Everyone said we were looking for a needle in a some of the carriage classes to their shows. I wanted haystack! Big mistake telling Earl that he couldn’t find an to learn more so I joined the Carriage Association of antique miniature size carriage. He then went on a quest America which has a wealth of information plus I to find one. started following anything that was carriage related on My AMHR gelding, Hallmarks Boomer’s Buckingham Facebook. is 36” tall and it has been difficult finding a carriage 2016 was the first year carriage classes were added to light enough, and in proportion to the horse plus having the AMHR National show. We decided to give it a try enough leg room inside the carriage for an adult. About but wasn’t sure if a four wheeled vehicle would be out of place. I added wooden wheels to my Jerald show cart, pulled off the boot and painted the basket black. It turned out great and we ended up with a Reserve in Carriage driving. I didn’t attend nationals in 2017 but in 2018 I decided to drive the little four wheeled runabout and ended up having an amazing show. Winning carriage reinsmanship, carriage stakes and Sunday In the Park. Carriage driving is growing by leaps and bounds. We used to have very small classes but now we are seeing as many as twelve carriage competing now. There isn’t a show I haven’t aggended where people come up to me and ask all about my carriage and carriage driving. They have questions about finding aprons, what type of cloths and hats to wear and much more. At the Club of North Texas shows the carriage classes are drawing an audience. There are so many different types of vehicles and also different types of horses. All are correct. I love the fact that my horse is not using a martingale and is not all checked up. He seems happier and it is a division I truly enjoy. Give it a try you just might fall in love with carriage driving! 42 The Journal • December 2019/ January 2020

Royalty Update A Final Farewell from ASPC/AMHR/ASPR 2019 Registry Queen Samantha Payne Thank you for an amazing year representing the registry! I enjoyed meeting many new faces and seeing some familiar ones along my journey. Congratulations to all I got to see in center ring and thank you for all the memories from the tears to the horses that were a hoot to put neck ribbons or flowers on them. I had the opportunity to represent the organization at multiple events. The first was Farm Day for elementary kids at my college. I then had the honor of handing out awards, specifically the Roelene Lundy Memorial Trophy, at the Iowa State Fair Miniature Horse Show. Finally, I attend the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show to hand out awards and interact with participants. I am honored to hand my crown off to my sister, Allie. Her passion for the registry will drive her to do great things in this role and involve many new people. I am thankful for the support of the office staff, the center ring folks, the board of the directors, all registry members, my barn family, and my family over my year as royalty. I could not have done it without you all! I cherish the many memories made over the year and will cherish them for the years to come. Thank you for a great year and good luck in the years to come!
