Birding // St. Lawrence County’s “crazy quilt” of habitats The region has become prime habitat for osprey and bald eagles. In the north central Adirondacks, Massawepee Lake is a large boreal peat land surrounded by fir, white pine and spruce forests. Woodpeckers, grouse, jays, grosbeaks and many more species all call this northern coniferous forest their breeding ground. Golf // Some nature lovers prefer the manicured greens to the rough exteriors of the hiking trails. St. Lawrence County features 15 golf courses from par threes to the meticulous groomed challenging course. Massena Country Club and the St. Lawrence State Park Golf Course in Ogdensburg are both located on the banks of the scenic St. Lawrence River. Partridge Run and St. Lawrence University Golf Course both offer 6,000 plus yards, par 72 courses in the village of Canton. All types of water exist for canoes or kayaks, from exciting white water to calm and still ponds. The Cranberry Lake region, one of the largest remote areas remaining in the state, is a great destination for paddlers. The lake covers 11 square miles and has 155 miles of shoreline, as well as more than 40 primitive campsites.
