January Focus Junk-Free January These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. January! A brand new year and a chance to reset after the excitement (and excess!) of the holidays! But you also might find that your home is in a bit of chaos after the craziness of the last few months. Have you got behind in some of your chores? Do you have piles of \"stuff\" that you don't know what to do with (ahem... toys!)? January is the perfect time to restart and get back into your routine (or start a new one!). Don't get too caught up in New Years Resolutions, instead focus on making a little bit of progress every day. Don't overwhelm yourself! Print out cleaning routine and display it somewhere you will see every day. Declutter any clutter spots and put everything away. Find a \"home\" for any new toys, items, clothes etc. Organize storage area before putting away holiday decorations. Focus on 2 or 3 rooms and sort, organize, donate or toss everything. Set goals for yourself for the coming year. Not sure how to do it? Pick ten things you want to do by the end of the year: book a vacation, start an art class, potty train your toddler, run a 5k race, start a college fund... etc.

February Focus Fix-It February These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. Is it me, or is this year flying by? February already?! When life gets busy and time flies, we often forget to do the basic maintenance and upkeep that our homes desperately need. This month our focus will be to work on a few of those home maintenance projects that we have been putting off. All homes are different and depending on the age of your home and location, you might have different tasks that you need to do. These are some ideas to get you thinking about how to show your home a little love (think of it as a Valentine's Day present to your home!). Change filters on home appliances - air conditioner, furnace, humidifiers, vacuum cleaners, water systems etc. Schedule a chimney inspection and cleaning Schedule a furnace or air conditioner service Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors Touch up paint chips or marks on your walls Clean your clothes dryer vent (try using a dryer vent cleaning kit) Check your sump pump is working correctly Pull your refrigerator out and clean the coils on the back with a brush and vacuum

March Focus Messy March These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. Winter is slipping away and Spring is almost here. It's at this time of year that we start to think about waking up our homes and Spring cleaning! You don't have to do a full \"Spring Clean\" but this is a good time to tackle some of the spots that we forget to clean regularly. This month we will focus on cleaning some of those spots that collect dirt and dust over the winter. You might clean a room but it can still seem \"grimy\" because the edges and corners aren't clean. We're going to fix that this month! Dust/wipe down any blinds or curtain rods that you have Take down and wash any drapes or curtains Wash windows (just inside if it's still too cold outside!) Wash or shampoo rugs Remove bedding and vacuum mattress Rotate or flip mattress if needed Launder blankets, comforters and duvets Wipe down all doors and door handles Vacuum around the edge of the room (using a crevice tool) Clean out refridgerator Clean inside of oven

April Focus Fresh Air April These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. Winter is finally melting away, and spring is starting to... well, spring! This is an ideal time to get our outside areas ready for the warmer days ahead (if you are in the Southern Hemisphere and it's Fall, then you can still do these tasks to get your home ready for winter!). Our outside spaces are just as important to us as our inside rooms. Many off us have decks, balconies or patios that double as living spaces during the warmer months. There is a fashion for outdoor seating areas, cooking (time to grill, anyone!), and relaxing. So let's treat these areas the way we would our inside rooms! Sweep front porch Sweep deck/patio/balconies Shake out front door mat (if you don't have one... get one! A good door mat cuts down on the amount of dirt that comes in the home) Dust/wipe down any outside light fixtures Wipe down front door and door fixtures Wash/wipe down outdoor furniture Kill weeds in sidewalks and driveway cracks Pressure wash sidewalks, driveways, fences etc. in needed Fertilize grass and plants Plant some spring flowers!

May Focus May Motivation These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. As the weather warms up, it harder to stick to a cleaning schedule because we want to spend more time outside enjoying the sunshine. So this month we're going to focus on re-igniting our cleaning motivation! It's OK if you occasionally fall off the cleaning wagon, but the important part is being able to get back onto it as quickly as you can. It's easy for chaos to descend on your home, if you let it slide for too long! Try these cleaning motivation tricks when you are losing the urge to stick to your cleaning schedule! Play you favorite music when you are cleaning. Set a timer for 15 minutes and see how much you can get done. Close your eyes and draw a mental picture of what you want your home to look like. Try rearranging your furniture to revitalize your space and ignite your desire to clean! Try a new cleaning product (a nice smelling one!). Start with a small (and easy) task and slowly work up to a bigger tasks. Reward yourself with a treat if you stick with the schedule for a week!

June Focus Junk-less June These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. June! Halfway through the year and it's time to look at our junk again! You might find that your home is in a bit of chaos during the summer months. Have you got behind in some of your chores? Do you have piles of \"stuff\" that you don't know what to do with (ahem... toys!)? June is a great time to restart and get back into your routine (or start a new one!). Don't get too caught up in trying to be \"perfect, instead focus on making a little bit of progress every day. Pick ten things you want to do by the end of the year: book a vacation, start an art class, potty train your toddler, run a 5k race, start a college fund... etc.

July Focus Juggling July These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. July can be a busy busy. Between the kids being off school, vacations and celebrations (July 4th baby!), it feels like the month goes by in a blur. However, with the warm weather, it's also an excellent time to get outside and tackle some tasks. However, if it's too hot to be outside, there is plenty you can do inside too! Ever heard of 'Christmas in July'? How about having a 'Christmas Clear-Out in July'? Just like you would in December! With the kids at home, this is an excellent chance to sort through kids clothes and toys and get ready for going back to school! Clean outdoor light fixtures Clean outside grill Sweep outside patio or deck Sort through kids clothes, toys and books Organize the remaining kids items and plan for the coming school year (will they need a homework desk?) Have a garage sale for the extra items you're getting rid of, or donate them. Sanitize pet areas and air pet bedding outside in the sun

August Focus August Motivation These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. The summer seems to have flown by (in fact the entire year seems to be flying by!), and it's already August! That means that summer fun is winding down and everyone is getting ready for back to school, end of vacations and back to reality! But it's also a good time to start thinking about Fall and the Holiday season ahead (because it will be Christmas before you know it!). August is a great time for a fresh start too. Why not take a look at your household routines and see how you can adjust them. Do you have kids starting school or moving onto Middle or High School? That's going to bring changes to your routine, so now is the time to start planning. Clean out your car ready for school runs and car-pooling Clean summer sports equipment or toys ready to put them away until next year Clean outdoor garbage and recycling cans Wash outdoor cushions, rugs and blankets Clear away any cobwebs or insect mess from your patio and front porch Review your family's weekly routine and make any changes needed for the upcoming school year Check that your children have all the appropriate clothes for school - coats, sweaters, uniforms etc.

September Focus Shifting Gears September These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. September is here and that means the official end of summer... sob, sob! But it also means the start of Fall and lots of Holidays and celebrations to look forward to! That also means lots of busy days and planning ahead! With the change in seasons, the weather is also changing. So this is a great time to get your heating or cooling systems serviced and prepared for the coming season. You'll also want to get any chimneys cleaned, gutters cleared and any other jobs you need to do outside before winter hits. It's also time to bring in all your outdoor furniture and get it ready for winter. If you're in warmer states (like me!), then it's time to put out your patio furniture after the long hot summer! Get heating or cooling systems serviced Clean gutters, chimneys and other outside areas Wash all outdoor cushions, rugs and blankets to get them ready for storage Clean and store outdoor furniture and decor Clean and flip your mattress Launder and store summer bedding and get winter bedding ready Get firework and stack it ready for the winter

October Focus Organized October These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. Fall is well and truly here and the start of the exciting (and busy!) holiday season. When we think of October, we think of Halloween and cobwebs, dust, decay and dead leaves. We might want our Halloween decorations to look old and dusty, but that's not really a good look for the rest of our homes! This month we will focus of deep-cleaning and decluttering to get our homes ready for all the festive celebrations. By spending some time now to get ourselves organized, we can make the holiday season a lot less stressful and more a lot more enjoyable! Move large furniture and vacuum underneath and behind it. Shampoo upholstered furniture or have it professionally cleaned. Clear out closets and donate any summer clothes that were not worn all summer. Store other items for next year. Schedule for your carpets to be shampooed. Carpet cleaning companies get very busy before the holidays. Make a list of everyone you plan to buy holiday presents for and start brainstorming ideas. Start making a list of everyone you need to send holiday cards to. Order your holiday cards (order a few extras, in case you've forgotten someone).

November Focus Navigating November These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. The days are getting shorter and the evenings are much darker now. It's time to embrace cozy evenings by the fire, hot chocolate, family movie night and finish preparing for the holidays! By now you are probably in full-on holiday planning mode. Your calendar is filling up with events, parties and gatherings. And your to-do list is getting longer and longer! So there won't be much time for extra tasks this month, but you can still use your time wisely to plan ahead a little. Sort through your cookware and toss/donate any pots or pans that have lost their usefulness. Go through your plastic food storage containers and make sure the containers and lids match. Clear out any family board games and check for missing pieces (kids can do this task!). Make sure you have gift wrap and other gift-giving supplies (don't forget the sticky tape!). Plan your Thanksgiving meal early to give yourself plenty of time to shop for groceries. Make sure you are fully stocked on cleaning supplies, paper towel and toilet paper.

December Focus Declutter December These tasks are optional! You want to make sure that you've established your daily and weekly routines before adding any additional tasks. December is a great time to declutter and clear out some of your spaces. As it's winter in the Western Hemisphere this is an excellent time to work on projects indoors. Put on your favorite PJs, turn on some music or a favorite holiday movie and settle down to sort through some of your clutter spots! This is also the best time to have children go through their toys and donate anything they don't play with anymore. Talk to them about donating toys to families that don't have as many toys. Get them as excited about \"giving\" as much as \"receiving\"! Pick a clutter spot and clear everything away. Donate old toys, clothes, and books. Sort through financial papers and establish a filing system ready to complete your tax return. Declutter pantry and donate any non-perishable food to a local food bank. Sort through holiday decorations and donate any that you no longer use. (Consider donating the decorations to a local care home or school.) Take time to slow down and enjoy time with friends and family. We all get so busy in December, remember to enjoy it too!

Cleaning Supplies Daily Cleaning Supplies You don't need a lot of fancy supplies to keep your home clean. Having a few multi-purpose good quality items are far more important than having a closet full of every type of cleaning supply. These are the basic supplies you need for the daily and weekly cleaning tasks: Microfiber Cloths - You will want at least 6 microfiber cloths. These are so useful, you can use them wet or dry to clean every surface in your home. Kitchen, bathroom, dusting, and more. Sponges - Sponges are useful for cleaning sinks and bathtubs. Also, you will want an eraser sponge, as they are very useful for cleaning all kinds of things. Scrubbing Brush - A good scrubbing brush will help you clean tougher messes. You can also use smaller scrubbing brushes for things like grout. Dusting Wand - There are a few different options for a dusting wand. You can use a traditional feather duster, a microfiber dusting wand or a disposable Swifter type duster. Vacuum Cleaner - Once again there are a few different options. You will want at least a full-size vacuum with attachments. I would also recommend a cordless vacuum for tight spaces and quick clean-ups. Mop - A good mop for cleaning hard floors is important. Try a microfiber mop, as they are fast, easy and washable. Squeegee - This might seem non-essential, but a good squeegee is important for windows and showers. It helps you clean better and faster. Toilet Brush - Goes without saying you need a toilet brush! Have one in every bathroom. Cleaning Caddy - You need something to keep all your supplies together and carry them around in. You can use a caddy, tote bag, bucket or any large container. Visit www.lifescarousel.com/cleaning-supplies for more information and recommendations

Cleaning Products Daily Cleaning Products To really get your house clean you need to be using the right cleaning products. There is so many brands and types of cleaning product to chose from, it can be overwhelming. The good news is that you don't need a load of different products to keep your home clean. In fact, most of the cleaners you need you can make yourself with a few basic ingredients (see \"Cleaning Recipes\" page). These are the basic cleaners that you will want to keep on hand: Multi-Purpose Cleaner - You will want a good multi-purpose cleaner that you can use on all the different surfaces of your home. You can either make your own or buy one from the store. Disinfecting Cleaner - This is useful for places like the bathroom or kitchen where you want to keep germs under control. Toilet Bowl Cleaner - A good thick toilet bowl cleaner will help you clean your toilets quicker and more effectively. Abrasive Cleaner - For stubborn dirt or dried on food, you will want to use an abrasive cleaner. It's quick and easy to make your own out of a paste of baking soda and water. Furniture Polish - For wood furniture, you want a furniture polish that will oil and nourish the wood. Mold & Mildew Cleaner - If your home suffers from mold or mildew, then you want to keep some of this close at hand. Dish Soap - Not just for doing dishes! Dish soap is a great detergent to help clean all kinds of surfaces. You will want to keep the following products on hand for making your own cleaning solutions: White Vinegar - Baking Soda - Dish Soap - Rubbing Alcohol - Hydrogen Peroxide - Essential Oil Visit www.lifescarousel.com/cleaning-supplies for more information and recommendations

Cleaning Recipes Multi-Purpose Cleaner This multi-purpose cleaner is your \"go-to\" cleaner for almost every surface (except natural stone, marble or granite). 2 parts water 1 part white vinegar 2 -3 drops of dish soap Mix all ingredients together and pour into a spray bottle. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil of your choice. I generally add 15-20 drops for every 3 cups of cleaner. My favorites are lavender or sweet orange oil. Disinfecting Cleaner This is my favorite cleaner as you can use it on any surface (except natural stone, marble or granite) and it will sanitize the surface too. Great for windows & mirrors! 2 parts water 1 part white vinegar 1 part rubbing alcohol (vodka will also work) Optional - essential oil of choice Mix all ingredients together and pour into a spray bottle. Add essential oil if you choose. 10-15 drops for every 2 cups of cleaner. Abrasive Cleaner This abrasive cleaner is perfect for scrubbing sinks, bathtubs, cookware or anything that needs a little extra elbow grease. Baking soda Water Dish soap Dampen the surface and sprinkle liberally with baking soda. Add a few drops of dish soap to a sponge or scrubber and scrub the surface. Rinse clean with water. Mold & Mildew Cleaner This is a very useful recipe to remove mold or mildew from hard surfaces. 2 parts water 1 part hydrogen peroxide 25 drops of tea tree essential oil per 2 cups of cleaner Combine all ingredients together and pour into a spray bottle. Spray liberally onto the mold or mildew and allow to sit for 1+ hours. Rinse and repeat if needed. If mold/mildew is stubborn, you can increase the amount of hyrdogen peroxide or even use it neat.
