Ramona California has a long viticultural on the history, and the same applies for Vine Ramona, though the region was officially designated as an American Viticultural Area in 2006. Continued on page 16 www.ramonaguide.com 15
Ramona on the Vine Continued from page 15 A unique microclimate and ideal terroir helps make Ramona’s wine stand out in California and around the world, as many local winemakers have received prestigious awards for their craft. Popular varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Sirah, but as the vines mature and winemakers reach new heights of skill and experience, they’re also successfully growing white grape varietals including Viognier and Muscat, and producing exciting varietals like Tempranillo and Tannat. But what really sets Ramona’s wine region apart is the experience. With comfortable weather year round, enjoy tasting and dining in the great outdoors, with beautiful views of the countryside surrounding you. Consider joining a wine club, and returning for tastings at exclusive member only events. Perhaps the best part of exploring Ramona’s wineries is the friendly wine- makers and staff who come from all walks to life and endeavor to create a unique experience for each visitor. Raise a glass and make new friends when you visit Ramona’s tasting rooms! n 16 www.ramonaguide.com

Three Ways to Experience Ramona Explore Creativity There’s more to Ramona’s creativity than the murals that paint the town, with a rich artist community and opportunities to meet them. More than 30 local artists are represented at 2Create Gallery, 438 Main St., where you will find a large array of works including paintings, sculpture, glass work, jewelry, woodwork and more. You’ll even be able to learn about the artists and their process, as they also serve as docents for the gallery. Visit 2creategallery.com. Local artist Linda Kelly also has a studio, located at 603 Main St. Visit facebook.com/ artistlindakelly. Throughout the year, you can enjoy numerous art events like the Ramona Open Studios Tour, the Ramona Art and Wine Festival and AnomaR Festival. Visit EverythingRamona.com for a list of upcoming events. Hike one of Ramona’s trails and you’ll get Hit the Trail more than just a good workout. Whether you’re spotting wildlife, gaining a little perspective by taking in the view of mountains in the distance, or looking for a place to picnic in nature, you’re sure to find something great at each point along the trail. A good choice for hikers of any level, the Ramona Grassland County Preserve offers wide open spaces, views of hawks and eagles nesting nearby and cattle grazing in the field. This is a multi-use trail, so bring your bicycle or horse if desired! For a bigger challenge, check out Mt. Gower County Preserve. Some trails will take you 2,000 feet above sea level to get an expansive view of Ramona and the surrounding backcountry. Big boulders all over the mountain make this a scenic trip, no matter which trail you take. Remember to hydrate, wear sun protection, watch for wild animals, and, of course, have fun! 24 www.ramonaguide.com
Stroll Old Town Ramona’s Old Town — the stretch of Highway 78 between 10th and 3rd Streets — is a hub of great food, unique shops and friendly folks all within walking distance! You’ll find antiques, artisan made goods, locally made art, outdoor gear and more from Ramona’s small businesses owners, who are as much specialists on their wares as they are on the town itself. Need a recommendation on what to check out next? Just ask! Learn a little bit about Ramona’s history at Guy B. Woodward Museum, 645 Main St., with the help of their informative docents. When it’s time to eat, you have a big decision to make. Do you crave a comforting country breakfast of biscuits and gravy, or a fresh and flavorful salad with locally sourced ingredients? Whatever takes your fancy, you’ll have options like Mexican, American, farm-to- table and more. Top off the visit by stopping in one of Main Street’s tasting rooms, stocked with local beer, wine, cider and spirits! n Serving Ramona Since 1987 438 Main St. in Historic Downtown Ramona OPEN DAILY 7am - 8pm On your way out of town to Julian Breakfast Served All Day We are open and adhering 7 Days a Week to the County’s protocols to Serving Beer & Wine ensure a safe environment Sonja Steiner with Guy Fieri of the Food for all during this time. Did You KNow? Before it was permanently settled, the Ramona area was inhabited by the Kumeyaay Nation of native Americans (Diegueño), a semi-nomadic people, who established annual settlements there as they moved between coastal and inland grounds. Their presence is indicated by archeological evidence such as rock paintings, etchings, and grinding stones used to grind acorns into meal for bread.
