ASHINGTON New York–based SHoP Architects designed a 838,480- square-foot building for 1100 15th Street NW in Washington, D.C., to replace the ancient headquarters of The Washington Post. The proposed building (called Midtown Center) will house the new headquarters for Fannie Mae, as well as 42,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor. Washington, D.C.–based 9tted materials to the city’s zoning board on July 27, 2015. Local firm WDG Architecture was the architect of record on the project. Tvitec manufactured the architectural glass for the facade. Over 20.000 sqm of insulating glass. Oldcastle Building Envelope was the metal frame worker And Clark Construction developed the building.

MIDTOWN CENTER Built to LEED Gold certification standards, this 14-story building will replace the existing Washington Post buildings and neighboring office building with a 14-story project with 45,000 square feet of retail on two levels. There will also be a rooftop terrace, fitness center, and curtain wall with 3D panels and copper cladding.

Along the north side between the addition and Columbia Center, an existing private drive will remain, however, this area will be improved will higher-quality paving and include a sizable flexible seating area. In addition, a large canopy structure, approximately 3,000 - 4,000 square feet, is proposed

over this area which will connect the proposed addition to Columbia Center, therebymaking them a single building for purposes of zoning. Along the south side of theaddition, the two wings, or towers, of the building will extend toward L Street, separatedby a large open courtyard that will provide seating, landscape and other outdoorpublic amenities.

MIDTOWN CENTER By shop Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., Midtown Center is a 14-story mixed-use office, dining, and retail complex arranged around a large new public plaza. The building works to integrate with its environment— and honor local architectural traditions—through a unique glass-and-copper facade designed to slowly patina over time. This architectural expression optimizes solar shading while maintaining maximal daylight conditions for the workplaces within; it also serves to negotiate the scalar differences inherent at this site, where larger civic buildings abut smaller-scale streets. A series of three bridges cross between the two wings of the complex, sculptural elements that animate the courtyard below. Much of the ground plane is given over to smaller gathering places linked by public pathways that “cut the corners” and connect adjoining neighborhoods along the most direct and natural pedestrian routes. Together with our client, Carr Properties, SHoP has created conditions that will foster dynamic public spaces—a critical addition to the larger network of open spaces that defines the city’s increasingly lively downtown. isolar awards 2018 | 1100 15 th ST. MIDTOWN CENTER By OLDCASTLE (OBE) OBE was hired by the owner and contractor to develop in partnership with the architects a custom unitized façade system. The façade is made of curtainwall panels that integrate full height glazing, patinaed copper panels and aluminum extrusions in a shingled format. From concept to completion, the project façade was fully designed, engineered, manufactured and installed by the OBE Toronto EP team. The façade integrates unique features such as; 40 different articulating panel geometry’s which make up the unique shingling façade and 3x 100’+ bridges which span a courtyard of glass, intersect in multiple locations and are wrapped in custom extruded and patinaed fins structure. In January 2018 OBE Toronto EP was awarded the prestigious Washington Building Congress award for the Craftsmanship which recognizes the outstanding skills and achievements of individual craftsmen. Our leadership has been based on the growth of automated and innovative processes in the transformation of eco-efficient glazing solutions for the main world markets of singular construction . The Spanish architectural glass transformer supplied for this work close to 22.000 sqm of diferent high performance glazing products. Mainly Tvitec fabricated double glazing (IGU) with tempered (HST) and laminated glass. The coat type glasses used in this building was Guardian Climaguar Premium 2T and AGC Ipawhite Stropray Vision 50T. Tvitec processed close to 5.000 units for the facade of Midtown Center.
