BOOK OF THE WEEK ___ “WHEN DEATH TELLS A STORY, YOU REALLY HAVE TO LISTEN.” Narrated by Death, following the unlikely events of a German girl, a tragedy and some stolen words.“The Book Thief is resonant, angry and beautiful: a gem inthe dirt. The story takes place in 1983 during the two World wars when a scrawny orphan girl moves in with the Hubermanns, her new foster family. As Death tells her story, Hans, her foster father, teaches her the beauty of words when he realizes she can’t read. Thus, she grows to love the words - even steals a book from a Nazi bonfire. Though their family barely scrapes by, their situation becomes even more precarious when they secretly shelter a Jewish boy. At first glance, I didn’t seem to like it much but when I finally came to read it, I was Instantly spell-bound. I fell in love with the words, as much as the heroine did, and hated them just as much. It’s a unique story told in a very different perspective of WW2 and with the odd perspective of Death bringing life (or you could say souls) to the Words. Soon I, and probably you once you’ve read this that is, have come to respect him will and ultimately feel sorry for him. In the long run, the message is clear, there is more to us humans as to what meets the eye, that we have a capacity to be resilient and compassionate, that even through a tragedy there is still a small burning fire of good and the absolute power that words have on us. Final note: (and a spoiler, so if you mind look away) At the end of the book, Death pronounces the last lines of the story which reads, “I am haunted by humans.”” - Mary 9G
My Experience In English Lessons: By: Sarah Danish
We are Reading ( Year 9 ) A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens The Christmas Carol is a book that includes the importance of love and compassion. The main character fixated on making money that he no longer knew how to live in a loving community. The book says alot about greed, selfishness. It emphasizes that we all have the opportunity of being more kind towards each other. This book teaches us a moral that we can transform ourselves for the better through kindness, generosity, compassion and love. I personally recommended reading this book to anyone because it really educates people on the importance of morals and values and why we should help others when we are able to. In class we discussed why people categorize each other based on their higher and lower society. Overall I think that this book is really worth reading. - Fauziya 9G

MOVIE RECOMMENDATIONS: “Wonder is a brutally powerful story of a 10-year-old boy named August Pullman, who has a facial anomaly. He is an ordinary kid who plays Xbox, is obsessed with Star Wars, but despite the 27 operations done for his face he will never look normal. I'm the type of person who enjoys books over movies, as I find words can easily fuel my imagination. However, never have I been this impressed with a movie being able to capture the elements the book originally had. The movie 'Wonder,' inspired by the book, truly blew me away. The actors were amazing, the emotions so wonderfully told, and the story so perfectly conveyed. I was hooked for every minute, every second. This movie showcases one of the rare events when a director is able to put the magic of a book onto the silver screen. I heavily recommend this to those who enjoyed the book, and I tell you all to brace yourself when watching it. The emotional moments made me shed a tear, and this movie will forever have a place in my heart.” - Faryal 9G (Fauziya 9G, person below)
