Corporate Case Study10 Independence Blue Cross Renovation. Laminam by Crossville® - Filo Mercurio
Project Info:Project: Independence Blue Cross renovation Distributor: Garden State Tile (Philadelphia, PA)(Philadelphia, PA) Installer: Belfi Brothers & Co., Inc. (Philadelphia, PA)Architect: Meyer Interiors + Design, George T. Wilson, Architectural Photographer: Jeffrey TataroPhil Burkett, Todd Sell (Ardmore, PA) (Gladwyne, PA)Interior Architect: Meyer Interiors + Design, SuzanneH. Nicholson, Kathryn HuncharGeneral Contractor: The Riff Group, George W.Schmidt (Phoenixville, PA)The renovation of Philadelphia’s Independence Blue Cross (IBC) corporate headquarters, housed in the city’s iconic 11Independence Tower, was significant in both its size and scope; the redesign of the 45 floors—accounting for a total of 840,000square feet—was to not only create a dynamic workspace for employees but also launch the company’s new brand identity. The five year project encompassed, according to project designer Meyer Interiors + Design, “…a complete interior buildingmodernization including the overhaul of the 1987 building’s lobby, full-floor cafeteria for its 3,400 employees, and all officefloors.”As with any corporate office, the lobby—a location utilized by both visitors and employees—plays an important role in settingthe tone for the entire space. In the case of the IBC project, the front of the lobby is comprised almost entirely of windows, sothe space becomes a part of the streetscape, experienced not only by those within the building but also by passersby. The lobbyis the face of the building, making it imperative that it be redesigned to offer a true representation of the business within. The towering ceilings of the lobby demanded that the design team choose a material that was on scale—something substantialin size yet visually interesting. The specifiers sought surfacing that “feels” corporate yet breaks free of the stodgy, uptight imagethat the business of insurance can evoke. With a total of 10,000 square feet of surface to cover, this material needed to be abeautiful, durable, and reasonable to install. The specification of Laminam by Crossville®, with its collection of large format, thin porcelain tile panel products, supportedthe design goals and material requirements. The design team selected Laminam’s Filo collection in the Mercurio color to beinstalled on the walls and in elevator lobbies within the space. The Laminam panels’ textured, metallic finish creates a uniformyet dimensional canvas upon which the lighted Independence name and logo shines as the focal point. With their generous1M x 3M exterior dimensions and lean 3 mm thickness, the Laminam panels offer the size and style the space demanded. What’s more, the overall installation carries a decidedly modern aesthetic, communicating the idea that the businesshoused within the space is contemporary in its approach. There were significant challenges on the project related to phasing and timing, and, in addition, the installation team, BelfiBrothers & Co., Inc., had not previously worked with Laminam—adding a bit more pressure to the already-tight timeline.Because the fast track of the project didn’t allow for the demolition of the core wall granite that was already in place, theexpansive Laminam panels were installed over the existing material. The ability to install the Laminam porcelain tile panels overthe granite was a time saver and reduced costs associated with demolition, as well. The installers opted for Mapei’s Eco PrimGrip, a bond-promoting primer, to improve the performance and adhesion of the mortar. Importantly, the team used a well-coordinated system to ensure a successful installation. They decided to clad walls at their own building as a training session fortheir installers. This endeavor not only allowed for Belfi’s more than 100 year old facility to receive an update, but it also servedto educate the team on approaches for effective large format, thin panel tile installations for clients.Interior architect Kathryn Hunchar adds, “…[Laminam] is unlike any other tile installation we’ve ever done. It is a veryspecialized tile, which requires unique tooling, training for the mechanics as to how to handle and set it, as well as revisions tothe way we usually bid projects…Once the system is in place, it’s pretty easy to work with but getting there takes effort.”She adds, “It was very important that we had the right team on the job and that all involved made sure to learn about theproduct up front and asked the right questions. Laminam made for a very good solution to a unique design challenge.”IBC has the goal of being “The Best Blue,” according to president and CEO Daniel Hilferty, and that goal was certainly brought tolife in the IBC lobby design, where a thoughtful approach to materiality yielded a stunning and smart result.

Education Case Study18 Baylor School Guerry Dining Hall. Crossville® - SpeakEasy, Retro Active, . Shades by Crossville®, Argent, and Color by Numbers®
Project Info: Tile Installer: United Enterprises Tile Manufacturer: Crossville Inc.Architect: Franklin Architects Distributor: Louisville Tile Distributors of ChattanoogaInterior Designer: Sara Webb Louisville Tile Representative: Bethe MotlowPhotography: James CrowleyGeneral Contractor: Morgan ConstructionExclusive, traditional, time-honored… These are just a few words commonly used to describe Baylor School of Chattanooga,Tennessee. Established in 1893, Baylor is a private, co-educational preparatory school for grades 6 through 12, with both day andboarding school options. With a long-standing reputation of excellence, the institution has thrived in its mission to nurture students tobe people who make positive differences in the world. Those in leadership at Baylor are keenly aware of all the details involved in promoting quality of student life and enhancing learning—including the state of the school’s physical environments. It’s imperative that spaces be continuously updated in order to attract andretain students and provide an atmosphere that’s comfortable and conducive to camaraderie and education. To that end, officialswith the school recently pursued a large scale renovation of Guerry Dining Hall. Guerry, built in 1931, is home to the campus’ maindining facilities and hosts more than 1,200 students and faculty daily for meals. The goals for the Guerry Dining Hall renovation wereto improve traffic flow, maximize seating, and provide a more inviting on-campus living environment for students, faculty, and theirfamilies. From an updated serving area with multiple cooking stations to new seating configurations for a variety of events, the designhad to not only accomplish many goals for modern-day student life but also compliment the classic architectural style of the campus.Criteria for the hall’s flooring selections focused on function and style. The floors needed to be extremely durable in order to 19withstand constant heavy traffic, and they had to offer the right, upscale look befitting the building’s overall design aesthetic. Leadinterior designer on this renovation project, Sara Webb of Franklin Architects, ultimately determined that Crossville’s SpeakEasycollection made the grade for the main dining hall specification. Offering the look and feel of American hardwood, SpeakEasy capturesthe historical and traditional sensibility while providing the superior functionality of porcelain tile that the environment requires.Manufactured in the U.S., SpeakEasy contains a 4% pre-consumer recycled content and is Green Squared certified through the TileCouncil of North America for its proven standards of sustainability. In addition to the SpeakEasy specification, Crossville’s Retro Active and Shades collections were also incorporated into the flooringdesign to help create visually distinguishable spaces that guide and ease of traffic flow. As students may now move more easily inthe dining hall to access the many updates and features of the space, students report increased satisfaction, and more of them arechoosing to eat on campus.Crossville’s Color By Numbers® collection also made the grade for as the surfacing of choice on the interior restroom walls. Thesecolorful tiles were specified with the addition of Crossville’s proprietary Cross-Sheen® finish to ensure easy maintenance and cleaningfor the long term. Additionally, the Argent line brings a colorful, modern touch to the floors in these busy spaces.Crossville® tile works in harmony with other design elements to create a positive place for Baylor students to gather, learn, and grow.

Exteriors Case Study24 De Anza High School. Crossville® - Exterior Cladding

Such was the case with De Anza 25High School in Richmond, California. Originally opened in 1955, the school was showing its half-century in operation by thetime the facility came under scrutiny by administrators and local voters in 2005. With the changing needs in education andenrollment numbers, administrators decided that the school should be completely rebuilt instead of renovated. Citizensconcurred, passing a bond measure that included $161 million to construct a new De Anza campus. With a student population of more than 1,400 De Anza students in grades 9-12 at any given time, the design team developedplans to ensure the school could remain open during the 6+-year rebuilding process. Construction started in 2007 with anall-weather track and artificial-turf football field followed by a new Field House building. These new athletic facilities alloweddemolition of the existing gymnasium to make way for the construction of the new classroom buildings in 2010. The entirenine-building campus was completed and opened in the fall of 2013.Decisions regarding exterior façades of the nine buildings were just as important a consideration of interior surfaces, as officialsanticipated lots of weather, wear and potential defacing. The original specification called for thin brick façade. Soon after thethin brick installation on the Field House building, administrators requested an additional application of anti-graffiti finishes thatproved to be expensive and ineffective. Looking for better solutions, the design team then turned to Crossville® for its superiorexterior cladding system and Cross-Sheen® finish that provides defense against graffiti, scuffs and stains. With more than 200color and size combinations available in Crossville’s exterior cladding options, designers were able to match De Anza’s thin brickappearance utilizing Crossville’s Cross-Colors® porcelain tile in the Terra Rosata colorway cut to mimic the size and shape ofbrick. The product was finished with Cross-Sheen® to provide simplified cleaning and maintenance.Inside the school, specifiers prioritized both the technical properties and aesthetics of interior flooring. Special attention wasplaced on slip resistance, particularly in restrooms, to provide safe environments for students. The team again specified theCross-Colors® collection, opting for a mix of colors to complement the interior’s palette of tawny, white, bamboo and sunflowertones. Again, this tile offered the look, performance, durability and ease of maintenance that are imperative for an educationalinstitution. The results of the entire endeavor are a totally transformed, modern campus that is inviting for students and communityfriendly, as well. With design input from former and current students, the new school grounds now feature a street side plazaproviding easy public access to the performing arts, library, gymnasium, and school administration. The buildings’ interiorsinclude carefully designed and configured classroom facilities, food service and gathering areas. Thanks to a contemporaryapproach to the architecture and design backed by superior product selection, De Anza High School is welcoming its next 50years in grand style.

Regarded as 31“one of the best places in Broward County to give birth” for over 55 years, Holy Cross is renowned as the first hospital in the county tonot separate newborns from their mothers–an approach that raises the bar for early mother-child bonding. In 2013, Holy Cross initiated the Blessed Beginnings remodeling project to raise the bar once more for quality care and comfort inthe Holy Cross Maternity Unit, originally built in 1960. Facility renovations were divided into three separate phases for ease of projectmanagement and execution, with the first phase scheduled to complete at the end of January 2014. The end result of the entireendeavor is a fully remodeled, beautiful, and sophisticated environment that offers both aesthetic improvements and the latesttechnology in obstetrics.Architectural firm Gresham Smith and Partners led the project, and tile contractor PFC was awarded the contract for renovation of 18facility bathrooms and showers in the individual maternity ward units. The bath facilities were outfitted in 4 1/4” x 4 1/4” glossy glaze, talc body wall tile, original from the 1960 construction. In order to bring the facilities to modern standards and style, all bath/showerwalls required approximately 190 square feet of surface area be updated.Rather than demolish the existing tile surfaces of the bathroom and shower walls, the project team opted to find a surfacing solutionthat would install over previous materials.Designers wanted a large, modern porcelain tile that would exude elegance and tranquility in the maternity unit while offering optimalperformance. PFC’s installers prioritized the selection of a material that would be easy to handle, maneuver, and apply to a preexistingworkspace.Enter Laminam by Crossville®. The PFC team was familiar with Laminam by Crossville’s large format, lean profile porcelain tilepanels. These innovative panels are durable, versatile, and ideal for installing over existing tile. With overall dimensions of 1M x 3M yetjust 3mm in thickness, these panels can be easily trimmed and installed over a range of substrates—just what was in order for thisrenovation project. The design team selected the Laminam 3+ I Naturali in Ossidiana Vena Chiara to create a clean, fresh palette forthe renovated showers.A week prior to the installation at Holy Cross, PFC installers attended a Laminam by Crossville® workshop that proved extraordinarilyuseful in understanding how to handle, cut, and install the panels. As a result of this training, the installation crews experienced nobreakage and substantially less scrap than anticipated. These efficiencies helped to keep the Blessed Beginnings project on time andin budget. For the installation, four crews, each with one installer and one helper, were assigned to renovate the baths and shower stalls. Thecrews cleaned the existing substrate (the previously installed wall tile) and applied Mapei ECO-Prime Grip bond-promoting primer.Next, they applied Mapei Ultraflex LFT thin-set mortar to both the prepared substrate and the Laminam panels with the appropriatetrowels to achieve 100% coverage. Edge levels were used for spacing and flatness, and an orbital sander flattened trowel ridges anddrove out any remaining air. The team used Schluter® aluminum profiles for edge protection and aesthetics, as well as LaticreteSpectralock grout for a quality, finished installation. The installed Laminam 3+ panels provide a attractive, smooth surface that is easier to clean with minimal grout joints. This createsnot only a sophisticated design with seamless lines and contemporary appeal, but it also enhances the cleanliness and ease ofmaintenance of the maternity unit—an all-important factor when creating a safe environment for newborns and postpartum mothers. The speed of installation, lack of demolition, and reduced construction residue made Laminam by Crossville® an excellent choicefor this project. From start to completion, the renovation of all bathrooms took only 14 days. For a remodeling project 50 years in themaking, that speed, quality, and efficiency is unparalleled.

Hospitality Case Study36 Oak Creek. Crossville® - Retro Active and Main Street

The clubhouse facility, designed by the iconic architectural firm, Wurster Bernardi & Emmons, opened in 1968 to provide residents, including Stanford students, a place to socialize, exercise and enjoy the oak studded grounds.By 2011, the iconic clubhouse was in need of extensive architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing and lighting renovations.Drake Design Associates (DDA), led by firm principal Janet Drake, was selected to strike a balance: maintain the building’s 1960sstyle yet upgrade the facility to comply with modern aesthetic sensibilities, disabled access compliance and California energyconservation requirements.DDA accepted the challenge, and soon after the project began, the firm faced even more circumstances that would test the mettleof all involved. The original wood-frame structure was found to require extensive structural upgrades to address deficiencies andmeet current seismic code requirements, above and beyond the vast renovations already deemed necessary to achieve completedisabled access compliance. During demolition, hazardous materials, termite damage and water penetration were uncovered andhad to be thoroughly remediated. The original building floor plan was altered dramatically to address an outdated and maze-like interior of small rooms. The resultis an open and more inviting plan which allows for line of site views through the east / west axis of the building. The new layouteliminated various floor levels and associated sets of stairs that were not disabled accessible. The new, open design is sure to bemore navigable with easier transitions throughout the interior space—better for all facility guests. In addition to the second floor clubhouse renovation, the clients commissioned the construction of a 3,000-square foot fitnesscenter with adjacent locker rooms, toilet rooms, showers and spa facilities. Again, DDA was charged with keeping the 1960sinspiration while creating a contemporary environment. To get the look and performance needed, DDA carefully selected colorsand materials with a mid-century aesthetic.Crossville’s Retro Active and Main Street Porcelain Stone® collections provided an ideal fit for the look and color palette of thefitness center’s design. Additionally, Drake liked the technical characteristics, ease of maintenance and environmentally sound,LEED-supporting features of the lines, even though the project was not submitted for certification.Featured on the walls throughout the wet areas of the fitness center, Crossville’s Retro Active collection in Empress White providesa minimalist design scheme with an upscale look. The 2 x 12 Retro Active cove base finishes the look with clean, streamlineddetailing. Floors in the toilet rooms, changing areas, spa vestibules and shower interiors were completed with Crossville’s MainStreet collection in Cinema Champagne to create a subtle stone look. From new doors and windows to new LED lighting and exterior deck reconstruction, the Oak Creek Clubhouse has received a newlife while maintaining its mid-century, architectural aesthetic. Alongside the new fitness center, Oak Creek remains at home in itsuniversity surroundings, iconic as ever.“It’s our intent that the respectful redesign of this Wurster Bernardi & Emmons building will serve our clients and the communitywell as the building enters its next half century” Drake summarizes. “Hopefully William Wurster would have been pleased with thefinal result.”It’s an honor that Crossville® porcelain tile collections earned specification on such a unique, high profile and well-balanced project.
