WINTER 2021 | The Bell Chichester are theirs, (ask them about Chris Grayling) room table. I typed the contributions into my computer, and ours is Arundel. Do you think for one moment that then they were painstakingly edited with John’s either of those towns would decline an adequate bypass expertise and printed off. I can still hear John saying, “… on the grounds that it would cause more problems for change the spacing of this by 2 points”. At first, I had to us? Nonsense ask, what is a point? Then came the mammoth task of making the camera- Twenty miles West of Arundel, Emsworth is a similar ready paste-up – juggling the 45 or so adverts town also on the A27. Methinks you should perhaps intermingled with all the articles and photos. This “take the beam out of thine own eye....” (Matthew 7:5) ‘treasure’ was then taken to our printers, a local firm This is not ‘talking dreamily’ Joe and absolutely not the in Littlehampton. The quality of the publication was rampant idyll and conjecture fantasized by anti-passers always a tribute to John’s skills. Later we managed to such as yourself.... have colour photos- today the magazine is in full colour, greatly enlarged and enhanced. It is current fact that it has a similar town centre; a From a humble beginning I am delighted that The Bell bustling place with all the shops Arundel now lacks. It continues to serve Arundel as it begins its 27th year. also has a similar inner relief road that rarely encounters anything like the crawling jams that Arundel suffers from JOE HAYES and why? Because it HAS a dual carriageway running Former mayor and co-founder, with John Munro, just North of that, which flows freely, taking all through traffic out of the equation; with none of the grotesque of The Bell associations postulated by those against. Have you been Please send your letters to: there- with your eyes and mind open? The Editor, 1 Tarrant Wharf, Arundel BN18 9NY or email them to [email protected] I now live four hundred metres from that dual carriageway; the part that is a blessed relief to traverse 51 between Havant and Chichester. I’ll tell you that it does not interfere with my life at all, but it surely, surely would if all that traffic was on the A259, grinding through the villages it bypasses. CHRIS WAITE Southbourne THE BELL’S BIRTHDAY THE Bell has its 26th birthday but it seems like just a few years ago The Bell magazine was created. John Munro and I joined forces to set up the Lee Abbey mission, Tell Arundel, which involved working closely with all three churches. From our experience John realised there was a possibility for a town magazine. It would be published quarterly and a free copy would go to every home and business in our area. The church’s news would reach a much larger audience. The three churches agreed and appointed a member to join the Editorial team which would discuss every article and advert and any felt unfit for publication could be vetoed. It was 1995- at that time letterboxes were flooded with freebie papers, full of ads. We decided to limit advertising space to 20%. Before the first issue went to press, advertising for the entire year was sold and paid for up front! Soon there was a list of advertisers waiting for space to become available. To this day the magazine remains self-supporting, having never asked any of the churches for a contribution. Production in the early days took place on my dining
