We do however make decorations every expense and indulgence and it’s hard to see another way. year which is a fun festive activity and also sustainable. Dried oranges and lemons and popcorn garlands are a So here are my tips on how you can make the most few of our favorites to make. Salt dough ornaments are of some sustainable festive options for families in and something I used to love as a child and I think the boys around Arundel that will hopefully help with the bank are just old enough to make something pretty whilst not balance too! actually eating the dough (check out the recipe at the end of this article to make your own)! Collecting pine cones always looks festive too – the pine trees up in Binsted woods is a good spot to find your own. As far as the main event – the Christmas tree – buying locally from a Christmas tree farm that doesn’t use nasty chemicals is preferable. Our favorites are Christmas tree farms where you can go and cut down your own tree and make a real day of it. We’ve found you do have to travel a little further afield, Sussex Trees in Lindfield is a great spot. Not only can you pick and chop down your own tree, there’s also a farm with reindeer, donkeys and alpacas for the children to see. 2. Wrapping and gifts When it comes to gifts, it’s hard to get out of the mindset that we want to spoil the ones we love with heaps of gifts to show how much we care. There are more ways to do this though then buying new. We took part in Second Hand September this year (run by Oxfam), which completely opened our eyes to the bargains you can snap up through the likes of Facebook Marketplace – I bought some great nearly new finds from people just a few streets away in town! In a bowl combine flour, salt, and 1 1/2 cups water. Mix together well (mixture will be very crumbly, but will hold together easily when squeezed). 3. Knead dough for 10 minutes. Check that dough is smooth and pliant. If not, drizzle in a bit more water and knead a few minutes more. 4. Divide dough into 4 balls. Roll one of the dough balls into a rectangle 1/4 inch thick (you shouldn’t need any flour for this). Use cookie cutters to cut out your ornaments, carefully placing cut ornaments on a cookie sheet. Round up dough scraps, knead a bit, and roll out dough again until you’ve used it all. Once ornaments are on cookie sheet, use a chop stick or similar implement to poke a 1/8 inch hole in each for the hook or string. 5. Bake for 25- 35 minutes or until ornaments are firm and cooked through, but not browned. Cool on tray 15 minutes, then set on a rack to cool completely. 6. Paint with acrylic paint, dry completely. Thread in a hook or string, and hang on the tree or gift. 55

Diana and success as a hub for creative industries. I moved into Tarrant Street in the summer of 1969. We chose Arundel because you could commute to London Many of the old pubs have gone – The Newburg, Victory, and bicycle to the beach, and of course the astonishingly Ship and Abercrombie, along with the Bridge Hotel. The different house prices then meant that a couple in their Kings Arms, where we went for refreshment during our mid-twenties, both working, could be quite picky. In consequence the town was full of vacant sites and semi-derelict buildings. This had its advantages, for us a double garage opposite for 50p a week. Planning control was of the lightest, until the destruction of a rather fine warehouse by the river, and erection of a soulless replacement prompted the Ministry then in charge to send down an Inspector to list everything. As values increased building work followed, guided by an intelligent District Conservation Officer, and an active Arundel Society monitoring applications. With cuts to local government the quality of Arun District planning has suffered, but the current refurbishment of listed buildings seems to me to do credit to the new householders. Shops extended right the way along Tarrant Street, with the Coop next door selling tinned peaches, and men’s underpants opposite. Arundel had two banks, a chemist, fishmonger and greengrocer, and a wonderful hardware store where men in long brown overalls could find you any kind of nut or bolt. Charity shops were unknown. 56

Diana once cut herself fetching food for an Arundel Museum outdoor meal, was whisked up the hill, patched up, and returned to the table without the guests noticing. Doctors routinely came out to visit patients with the most minor ailments, with only a blip in service when one of the doctors ran off with the Practice Nurse. Now people are more inclined to help themselves, walking, jogging, and doing Zumba and Pilates in the Cathedral Centre. And I won’t have a word of criticism of our Surgery, as Diana has just had an appointment within half-an-hour of telephoning for one. The local police, who fifty years ago didn’t look all that young, had a zero-tolerance attitude to minor misdemeanors. A small boy who had thrown a snowball through our window was brought to the door to apologise, without our having reported anything. We took that kind of service for granted, and most people left their doors open. A golden age, maybe, but nobody thought to clear up after their dogs. So on balance you win some and you lose some. What hasn’t changed is the feel of a small town where people generally say hello, generally step up when the need arises, and generally enjoy living here, as we do.
