These included the exotic-looking Banded Demoiselle with its undulating flight, iridescent ©Ian Powell body and inky wings and the less common White-legged Damselfly. We also continue to add butterflies to our long list and now have recorded 30 species, which is half of the UK total, and quite something for a comparatively very small area. This includes the elusive Purple Hairstreak, which has declined 54% since 1976 and is still declining, and the beautiful and rare Purple Emperor. We can pick any given area to survey and unearth an Aladdin’s Cave of creatures. One small pocket of woodland, known as Lynwood, has had a handful of surveys which have already unearthed 55 species of fungi (3 of which are listed on the Sussex Rare Species Inventory), a number of declining bird species such as the Red-listed Marsh Tit and Song Thrush, 18 Ancient Woodland Indicator plant species, 44 invertebrates (from a number of taxa) and Grass Snakes and Toads. A family of breeding Hazel Dormouse was found a stone’s throw away in the adjacent woodland. Wildlife populations are on the decline locally, in the UK and globally – yet the Mid Arun Valley continues to amaze and surprise. This little gem of relatively undisturbed countryside is surely lost in time and we sincerely hope it stays this way. ©Ian Powell 54
