Calendar of Events Hari Raya Aidilfitri Date: 6 & 7 July 2016 (subject to th th change) INTRODUCTION where Muslims would celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the day their victory over their spiritual achievements during the whole month of Ramadhan. It is a very special occasion and this is considered the most important celebration for Muslims in Malaysia. There are several interesting traditions practiced in Malaysia during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and some of them conjured due to cultural assimilation. For example, the tradition of giving out “duit raya” (raya money/gift) is actually derived from the Chinese tradition of giving “ang pows”. In the Muslim context, this is considered as giving alms (Malay: sedekah) especially to family members and those in need. Other than that, this occasion brings family members together every year in which leads to the tradition of “balik kampong” – literally means going back to one’s hometown. Another Hari Raya tradition practiced by Malaysians is lighting oil lamps and arranging them at the front yard, another cultural assimilation to the Tamil tradition. All in all, this shows the strong unity among Malaysians where age-old traditions collide and embraced for the beauty and significance in them, although the context might differ but they remain pure in nature. 10
