Sentence Reading Strategies and Writing Parts of speech Noun – is a word that identifies or names people, animals, places, things or idea Singular examples (one): brother, home, sock, mouse Plural examples (more than one): brothers, homes, socks, mice Mary is beautiful. Paris is the capital of France. Freedom is very important.

Functions of nouns  1. As a subject in the sentence.  Ex: The earth moves around the sun.  Somsak always sends his mother a present on her birthday.  2. As an object in the sentence.  Ex: She bought a new car yesterday.  I love you so much.  3. As a complement in the sentence.  Ex: All we need is love.  My father is a teacher.

Pronoun is a word that is used instead of a noun or noun phrase. Types of pronouns  1 Personal pronoun  1.1 Subjective pronoun acts as a subject of the sentence.  I, You,We,They,He,She,It  Ex: He is my best friend.  1.2 Objective Pronoun acts as the object of a sentence.  Me,you,us,them,him,her,it  Ex: You can go with us.  2.Possessive forms.  2.1 Possessive adjective is used to show the possession.It must be follow by a noun.  My,your,our,their,his,her,its  Ex: Have you seen her new car?

Types of pronouns  2.1 Possessive pronoun is also used to show the ownership but it is not follow by a noun.  Mine,yours,ours,theirs,his,hers,its  Ex: Her skirt is white but mine is black.  3.Reflexive pronoun  Reflexive pronoun is used when we want to refer back to the subject of the sentence.  Ex: He cut himself while he was shaving.

Verb is a word that is used to indicate the states or actions of people or things.  Types of verbs  Action Verbs is a verb that express physical action.  Examples: jump, sit, talk, fly, walk,sleep,cry  Ex: Birds fly.  My uncle sent a letter to me last week.  When the police arrived,the thief had run away.  Linking Verb does not express an action , but it connects the subject of the sentence to its additional information.  Linking Verbs +Adjective or noun Appear be become come feel get grow keep remain Seem sound stay taste turn  This soup tastes delicious.

Adjective it describes a noun or pronoun  Examples: colorful shirt, funny story, tall boy My father is tall but my mother is short.  Positions of adjective  1. In front of a noun  Examples: She married a rich businessman. Her little son is sleeping in his bedroom.

Adverb is a word that describes or give more information about a verb, adjective,another adverb and a whole sentence.Most adverbs end with –ly (adjective +ly)  Functions of adverbs.หนา้ ท่ีของ adverb  1.Modifies a verb.  Examples: He walks quickly.  She never smokes.  2.Modifies an adjectives.  Examples: The dinner is extremely delicious.  He is really handsome.  3.Modifies an adverb.  Examples: They spoke very quietly.  4.Modifies a whole sentence.  Examples: Personally, I don’t agree with you.

Preposition is a word that is used before a noun or pronoun to show place, time or direction.  Examples: The concert finished at midnignt.  A cat is sleeping under the tree.

Conjuction is used to join words ,phrases and clauses in sentences.  Examples:I bought a new car and house.  He rarely reads books but he always gets A. I am still hungry although I ate a hamburger and a hotdog.
