Using repetition of archival images, Charan subverts the “record of power” to form connections with these women, creating a textile narrative of celebratory love.

Adopting its title from the Dutch still-life paintings of the Seventeenth century, Still Life with Flowers presents artists in contemporary New Zealand, who adopt the centuries- old tradition of depicting a floral still life arrangement as the subject of their composition. Though typically rendered hyper-realistically in oil paint throughout the history of art, the featured artists have each turned to a different means of rendering their common subject. 8 JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018 Each of our exhibitions in the Homestead Galleries is accompanied by free public programmes, providing different ways to engage with the ideas and artworks being presented. For families we have our monthly Saturday Gallery Club — fun and free art- making sessions for kids on the second Saturday of each month. Exploring a different topic and set of techniques each time, the activities are designed for children aged four years and over, and run for around 30 minutes. Let’s Talk About It Through music, spoken word, raps and personal stories, young people speak out about their challenges with mental health: they share their anxieties, experiences of depression, and about their attempts to end their lives, along with what is helping them recover. While their experiences may be confronting, audiences invariably come away uplifted and inspired by the openness and courage the young people display. If you write your own material in any word-based genre then we need YOU! Word Up! is an exciting performance competition which gives 13–21 year olds the opportunity to present their original work: from rap, poetry and spoken word to song lyrics, or even stand-up comedy. Whether it is functional or sculptural, this is the time to find support for your creative ventures. The class offers the opportunity to experiment with a variety of modelling techniques under the guidance of experienced tutor Kairava Gullatz. Students will discover their individual way of handling the clay, as well as enjoying a social creative environment. ADULT CLASSES 19 Collagraph Printmaking Sarah Ormsby Explore the exciting, image rich and low cost printmaking technique of collagraph. In this course we will learn a range of techniques available within this medium, including detailed and precise intaglio processes and building up textured plates with materials such as leaves, carborundum and gesso. We will also cut out graphic relief prints and emboss these onto soft papers. Participants will gain understanding and experience of the many possibilities of collograph and how it can be used towards their own creative interests. YOUTH WORKSHOPS 21 Painting Dreamscapes Sarah Ormsby In this exciting and fun two day workshop we will explore and create our own world of fantasy characters and places, based on the study of cartoon characters and contemporary Japanese art. We will then combine these in a finished mixed media painting on board, which explores the possibilities of a range of paint mediums and drawing materials including acrylic paints, collage, spray paints and Indian ink. 2 days $30 Tue 10 – Wed 11 July 13 - 18 YEARS 10am - 3pm Street Art: Sketchbook to Wall Harry McNiven This workshop will introduce participants to historical and contemporary examples of street art and technique through practical and detailed demonstrations from initial sketches to spray painted murals. Learn how to write and arrange a song from scratch, identifying the different sections of the song and your practice. They will re-create a favourite space or a scene conjured up from an imagined fantasy, complete with its various characters, ready to put on a one-man show! 24 JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2018 Whale Rider Kairava Gullatz Take a ride on the wild side and make a personalised sculpture from soft clay! Perhaps you would like to create yourself riding a white whale or a Formula 1 racing car? These are just a few examples to get you inspired. On the second day you’ll learn how to decorate your sculpture with colourful slips. A pottery wheel is available to enjoy throwing small vessels too. Everything will be glazed and fired for you to make it durable. 2 Days $95 Mon 16 – Tue 17 July6 - 12 YEARS 10am – 2.30pm Picasso Portraits Leela Bhai As one of the most influential artists of all time, Picasso introduced the world to Cubism over 100 years ago. We will examine how he explored ways to depict form, reducing it to a collection of two dimensional planes. CHILDREN / HOLIDAY CLASSES 27 Polymer Clay Miniatures Charlotte Maguire Learn to make fun polymer clay miniatures. Will you make delicious donuts? Figurines? A character from your favourite movie? A garden or a cactus collection? The choice is yours. Students will select a theme, sketch their ideas and be introduced to polymer clay and basic techniques for moulding.
