It will also have an excellent heating and cooling system! Edith and George: in our sea of islands Fri 19 February - Edith Amituanai and George Crummer Sun 4 April 2021 Initially shown at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington Opening (2019), Edith and George: in our sea of islands is reimagined in the Thu 18 February Homestead Galleries. With 100 years separating photographers 6pm - 8pm Edith Amituanai and the late George Crummer (1868-1953) each come together in the exhibition capturing moments in time from their Pacifica communities through photography. The two sets of portraits present important conversations around colonisation, migration, settlement and identity in the Pacific. This exhibition is part of the Auckland Arts Festival programme.
6 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2021 Each of our exhibitions in the Homestead Galleries is accompanied by free public programmes, providing different ways to engage with the ideas and artworks. For families, we have our monthly Saturday Gallery Club — fun and free art- making sessions for kids on the second Saturday of each month. Exploring a different topic and set of techniques each time, the activities are designed for children aged four years and over, and run for around 30 minutes. EVENTS 9 Summer School 2021 Monday 18 - Friday 22 January Summer School 2021 offers an exciting line up of hands-on workshops, delivered by accomplished arts practitioners from across 10.00am - 4.30pm daily Aotearoa. The programme provides ample opportunities to develop and hone-in on existing skills across a broad range of disciplines. From textile design through to comics, mobile phone storytelling, graffiti, glass-casting, fiction writing, and traditional Māori carving, there are many potential creative directions in store for participants. Summer School 2021 is the perfect place for you to learn practical skills from field specialists and engage with like-minded peers, in a supportive environment dedicated to creative exploration. ADULT WORKSHOPS 12 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2021 CEAC.ORG.NZ Adult workshops are a great way to stimulate your creativity and develop your passion for the arts. We offer sessions covering a range of mediums, contemporary art practices and skill levels to cater for all abilities. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to take your creativity in a new direction, experienced tutors will guide and inspire you to create in our supportive, studio environments. The six to eight-week term workshops offer a deeper experience, allowing you to develop and build your skills alongside like-minded classmates. Alternatively try a weekend workshop, the perfect way to explore and experiment with new mediums and art forms and encourage discoveries. YOUTH WORKSHOPS 17 Bone Carving Maha Tomo Have fun creating a bone carving in this tikanga based contemporary workshop. You will be introduced to a new skill set through the carving design process, using grinders, drills, wet and dry sanding techniques and polishing tools. 20 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2021 Coral Reefs Kairava Gullatz The astounding and diverse life in and around coral reefs is our inspiration for this clay class. Dive into your imagination and draw the colourful world of your reef with its inhabitants. Afterwards all shapes will be formed into clay wall plaques and painted with colourful slips. A pottery wheel is available to enjoy throwing small vessels too. The final artwork will be a large scale narrative, layering collaged images both found and hand drawn to create an untamed world. 28 APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2021 Brilliant Batik 7 - 12 YEARS Susanne Williamson 1 Day Traditional batik is an ancient art form practiced by many peoples Thu 22 April around the world. In this one day workshop we will be using a cold 10am - 2.30pm water wax resist to draw imagery on cotton cloth. The resist is applied using brushes, pipetts, stencils and stamps. The non-toxic $55 dyes will then be hand-painted onto the fabric using water colour techniques.
