Labour of Body Fri 26 July - Maria Kingi, Arielle Walker, Sarah Houle, Sun 15 September Georgina May Young, Kathryn Tsui, Doris Tsui Opening Thu 25 July Labour of Body takes into account the many different narratives of 6 - 8pm artists who work with textiles. The artists in the show each engage with textiles in their own way, sometimes as a response to their global positioning. The focus remains on textiles and their many functions which include assisting in the development of relationships, mapping location and exploring the issues of bodily labour.

Capturing Liberty Laura Williams “Growing up my mother worked in bookstores, where I was exposed to a plethora of material on different artists and periods of art and design.” Capturing Liberty is a new series of paintings by artist Laura Williams. Through an obsessive combination of patterns, vases and objects suggestive of other eras, the artist’s vivid kitsch works are fictional spaces which evoke memory, nostalgia and imaginary worlds. It was a time where changes needed to be made if I was to move forward in life as I had been stuck in a rut for as long as I could remember. One of the biggest things for me was to set my pride aside as I reached out for help, and today due to the changes made in my life I feel a wholeness and worthiness within. Alongside this, my art practice helps to explore and depict my sense of Māoritanga and how I celebrate the Māori blood running through my veins.” - Tony Brown. GALLERY ACTIVITIES 8 JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2019 CEAC.ORG.NZ Each of our exhibitions in the Homestead Galleries is accompanied by free public programmes, providing different ways to engage with the ideas and artworks. Panel discussions and artist talks are a great way to hear from the artists or the curator, as well as to share your own thoughts on the shows. For families we have our monthly Saturday Gallery Club — fun and free art- making sessions for kids on the second Saturday of each month. Adults can explore our exhibitions through art in the monthly still-life drawing club Pencil to Paper. Learn simple drawing and sketching techniques in a relaxed environment.

EVENTS 13 Matariki Festival Celebrate the Māori new year Corban Estate Arts Centre is proud to be involved in the 2019 Matariki Festival programme. For the Māori New Year, we are offering a film event and a tikanga-based carving workshop which celebrate Māori creativity and artistry. See below for more information on how you can become involved. Kia Ora Shorts A programme of Māori-made and themed short films curated by the Wairoa Maori Film Festival, presented at the Corban Estate Arts Centre as part of the Auckland Matariki Festival. “Te Ao Mai Nga Whatu Māori” —The world through a Māori lens, film works all directed or produced by film makers of Māori descent. Participants will learn about pounamu and be introduced to a new skill set through the design process, using grinders, drills, wet and dry sanding techniques and polishing tools, while also learning lashing and binding techniques used in Māori object art. Word Up! is an exciting performance competition which gives 13–21 year olds the opportunity to present their original work: from rap, poetry and spoken word to song lyrics, or even stand-up comedy. EVENTS 17 Open Arts Day Sat 28 September Welcome to our Neighbourhood 10am - 4pm Corban Estate Arts Corban Estate Arts Centre’s annual Open Arts Day provides the Centre perfect opportunity to see behind the scenes at this creative hub in West Auckland. The highlights of the day include more than Free, All welcome 20 onsite artists and performing arts organisations who will open their studios to the public, alongside exhibitions, free hands-on workshops, live performances, studio tours, artists’ talks and a live graffiti jam! Whether you’re currently participating in arts activities at the Estate or have never visited us before, come along and be inspired and involved in all the creative stuff happening in our neighbourhood. ADULT CLASSES 19 Exploring the Art of Glass Casting ALL LEVELS Sofia Athineou 7 weeks , Tue evenings Explore the art of glass casting in this fun 7 week workshop. We will Tue 13 August – work with wax, clay and a variety of other materials to understand 24 September mould making and the lost wax method of firing our objects. We will 6pm - 9pm learn to carefully de-mould and polish our castings creating exciting objects to take home. ADULT CLASSES 21 Solar Printmaking ALL LEVELS Leela Bhai 2 days Inspired by a workshop run by Prue MacDougall at Corbans Summer Sat 10 - Sun 11 August School, Leela will guide you into the magic of printmaking using 10am - 4pm light- sensitive plates exposed with UV light. The beauty of this process is that fine detail and a wide tonal range can be achieved. $325 Participants will learn processes such as collaging, printing using solar plates and editing. We will be using these new found techniques to write and record a song collectively over the 2 day period. Through branches that twist, twirl 10am - 3pm and spiral, we will paint, draw and collage on large wooden boards, exploring symbolism, pattern work, colour and shapes to tell our own $50 life stories. CHILDRENS / HOLIDAY CLASSES 27 Playful Abstract Paintings Jean Stewart Using the iconic paintings of New Zealand painter Robert Ellis as inspiration, we will spend two days exploring abstract painting techniques, focusing on the push and pull of positive and negative space within a composition. Using acrylic paint on large boards, playful textures will be explored using a variety of tools such as palette knives, knitting needles and combs. 2 days $85 Thu 11 - Fri 12 July 10am - 3pm 7 - 11 YEARS Snuggle Up Kairava Gullatz Be inspired by animal mums and their young ones in this fun clay class. Shape soft clay into beautiful sculptures with your hands, then as the last step of our creative journey we will decorate our ceramics with slip colours. We will throw small vessels on a pottery wheel too! Vehicles that existed in the past or vehicles that will take us places in the future are our inspiration for this clay class. Create stunning sculptures from your imagination, and learn about pottery techniques in an informal way including throwing small pots on a wheel. All ceramic works will be glazed and fired to make them durable. To be collected three weeks after the class has finished. 2 days $95 Wed 17- Thu 18 July 6 - 14 YEARS 10am - 2.30pm Pug Love Leela Bhai Peanut the Pug will be our life model! We will create a series of quick drawings and observational studies, experimenting with multiple mediums such as pencil, oil pastel and paints. These will be expanded upon with each student selecting either graphic design or cardboard sculpture to further showcase their “Pug Love”. Kids who are scared of or allergic to dogs should not attend. 1 day $50 Thu 18 July 10am - 3pm 6 - 12 YEARS Beetle Boogie Kairava Gullatz A class specifically designed for younger ceramic artists. In Beetle Boogie we will make a leaf shaped dish with small sculptures around the rim using a variety of sculpting techniques. CHILDRENS TERM CLASSES 29 Swooping Owls & Leaping Leopards Kairava Gullatz Eagles, fairies, sky divers... beings high up in the sky are our inspiration! Taking a playful approach, children will shape 3D wall plaques from soft white clay. Once all forms are finished, clay slips will be applied as a final colourful layer. Pottery wheels are available to explore throwing small vessels. Everything will be glazed and fired to make the figures durable and fully functional. 6 weeks, Thu afternoons $100 Thu 15 August – 19 September 6 - 12 YEARS 4pm - 5.30pm Learn 2 Draw Julie Moselen This class is designed to give children a broad understanding, knowledge and skill base in order for them to learn how to draw. Time will be spent studying light and shade, contrast, and rendering. A range of drawing styles will be covered which will include observational drawing, step by step guided drawing of animals and imaginative free drawing. 6 weeks, Tue afternoons $95 Tue 23 July – 27 August 4pm - 5.30pm 7 - 13 YEARS Everyday Life in Oil Jean Stewart New Zealand painter Jacqueline Fahey examines ordinary objects, domestic scenes and close relationships saying “Art should come from what an artist knows”. We will explore oil painting techniques including how to prep canvas, slow drying paint application and mixing of mediums such as linseed oil to create compositions that reflect the clutter of everyday life. The process will be strengthened by still life observational drawings, resulting in a rich, layered, unique painting, ready to hang on the wall. 8 - 13 YEARS 6 weeks, Wed afternoons $95 Wed 7 August – 11 September 4pm - 5.30pm

Corban Estate Arts Centre is home to artist studios, a café, art classes for adults and children, and an ever- changing programme of exhibitions and events. Based in Henderson, West Auckland, the arts centre is set within park-like grounds amongst the historic Corbans winery buildings. Just 5 minutes walk from the train station, or off Lincoln Road for those driving. Entry is free, everybody’s welcome.
