EXHIBITIONS 6 JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2021 CEAC.ORG.NZ Based at the heart of Corban Estate Arts Centre in the historic Homestead, our public Galleries host a year-round programme of innovative contemporary exhibitions and events that make a vital contribution to our vibrant arts scene in Waitākere. Exhibiting works from acclaimed local and international artists, we pride ourselves on inclusivity and the ability to offer exhibition experiences that educate, showcase a range of contemporary art forms and strengthen a sense of community. EXHIBITIONS 7 Paula Friis, The Remembrancer. 2019. Courtesy of the artist. Thought-Forms Fri 23 July - Paula Friis Sun 12 September Thought-Forms comprises a suite of tactile, woollen works by multi- Opening disciplinary artist Paula Friis. Taking inspiration from Matisse’s 1940’s Thu 22 July series, The Cut-Outs, Friis’ practice centers around her ever-growing 6pm - 8pm ‘library of shapes,’ that have been dissected from experimental drawings. Investigating these organic shapes, she creates abstract compositions in fibre using needlework, through a slow collage technique. In rendering her imagined scenes in richly coloured wool, Friis draws attention to the traditional, assumed role of needlework as a mindless female craft. Thought-Forms instead emphasises the meditative experience of Friis’ textile practice and offers a glimpse into her subconscious world.

With each gesture we transform, nurturing a sense of belonging to each other and our surroundings. CEAC.ORG.NZ A Footnote on New Zealand History Fri 17 September - Cindy Huang Sun 24 October Inspired by her experience as Tauiwi in Aotearoa, Cindy Huang Opening uses object-based installation to recreate a market garden Fri 17 September within the gallery space that reflects the sites where many 6pm - 8pm historic Chinese and Māori relationships were cultivated around Aotearoa. In a continuation of her ongoing practice, Huang interrogates how our written history has skewed in favour of Pākehā historians who have told the stories of others from their perspective, usually presenting a positive colonial narrative. A Footnote on New Zealand History instead highlights the lack of written knowledge around Chinese, and specifically Māori- Chinese, history in Aotearoa.
EXHIBITIONS 11 Ruby Joy Eade, Elmer (2021). Courtesy of the artist. 1924 Fri 17 September - Sosefina Andy, Ruby Joy Eade, Sun 24 October Daphne Espiritu, Karen Rubado, Erica van Zon Opening Fri 17 September 1924 marks the year that building on the Homestead at the heart of 6pm - 8pm Corban Estate was completed, and the Corban family first resided in their new home. Almost 100 years later, 1924 presents a dynamic group of contemporary textile artists in Aotearoa who each nod to the domestic nature of both the Homestead Galleries and their considered practices in embroidery, weaving, crochet, quilt and tuft- rug. Through the complexity of fibre, 1924 considers the historic role of textiles in the home alongside the domestic heritage of the interior gallery spaces; once a parlour, a library and various bedrooms within the Corban household.
