OCTOBER / NOVEMBER / DECEMBER CEAC.ORG.NZ The long awaited seismic strengthening project is now underway with fencing and scaffolding being erected around the cafe, the cellar and the Opanuku Studio buildings in preparation for the earthquake proofing. The cafe has been relocated to the Lower Homestead with many of our resident artists, staff and workrooms still functioning elsewhere on-site. HOMESTEAD GALLERIES 4 OCTOBER / NOVEMBER / DECEMBER CEAC.ORG.NZ Based in the historic Homestead, our public Homestead Galleries feature an innovative programme of contemporary art exhibitions by both international and local artists. We pride ourselves on being inclusive, inspiring and offering exhibition experiences that promote and strengthen a sense of community. Each of our exhibitions in the Homestead Galleries is accompanied by free public programmes, providing different ways to engage with the ideas and artworks. On offer this quarter are artist talks and arts workshops. For families, we have our monthly Saturday Gallery Club offering fun and free art-making sessions for kids on the second Saturday of each month. And our monthly Gallery Bubs sessions welcome parents and their under 2's along to their very own curated exhibitions tour.

Nature’s Gentleman and Sistar S’pacific Fri 16 September – Sun 30 October 2022 Forgotten Vessels – Waiting for the Early Dawn Opening Nature’s Gentleman (Numa Mackenzie) and Sistar S’pacific (Rosanna Fri 16 September Raymond) have collaborated countless times over the past decade 6 – 8pm as part of the renowned SaVĀge K’lub. Expanding on their shared creative history, Forgotten Vessels – Waiting for the Early Dawn presents a dual exhibition where the artists each explore their solo- practices in conversation with one another, through the use of sound, craft-based practice and hue carving. Alongside their individual installations, the duo nod to their ongoing work as part of the SaVĀge K’lub collective in a third space serving as recreation of their shared artist studio Ana Pekapeka, lending space for activations, workshops and conversations throughout the exhibition.

Mā te horo nuku ka tūrangawaewae ai koe, Fri 4 November – To stand in place of the landscape Sun 11 December 2022 Dr Leonie Ngahuia Mansbridge Opening Through a collection of intuitive landscape paintings, multi-disciplinary Fri 4 November artist Dr Leonie Ngahuia Mansbridge (Ngāti Maniapoto) explores her 6 – 8pm connection to whenua as intertwined with her own whakapapa. Within a suite of found ornate frames, she incorporates exuberant colours and layered compositions to present abstract interpretations of the land that she calls home in both Aotearoa and Australia. Brought together with a distinct iconography, Mā te horo nuku ka tūrangawaewae ai koe, To stand in place of the landscape, explores how whenua assumes an awareness of belonging for Māori in spirituality and identity, from near and afar.

Her heirlooms in my garden includes works by contemporary artists who explore gardens as spaces for maternal connection and the sharing of intergenerational knowledge with their Mothers, Aunts and Grandmothers. Through various mediums, the exhibiting artists share their personal stories as the recipients of the precious heirlooms both grown and passed down.

CEAC.ORG.NZ In the beginning was an envelope Fri 16 December – Celebrating 20 Years on the Estate Sun 12 February 2023 Before Corban Estate became an Arts Centre, there stood an iconic Opening site in Henderson and an idea that arrived in an envelope. Under the Fri 16 December guidance of Naomi McCleary and the then Waitakere City Council, a 6 – 8pm major creative project coined the Eco Art Sculpture Symposium came to be in the summer of 1995. In the beginning was an envelope presents a fascinating suite of archival material from the project including original works on paper, various ephemera and a body of black and white photographs by seminal photographer, the late Glen Jowitt. The project remains a significant marker in Corban Estate’s more recent history, being the inspiring precursor for the future Arts Centre’s development.
EXHIBITIONS 9 Seven Sculptors Fri 16 December – Sun 12 February 2023 The multi-faceted medium of sculpture has long played a dynamic role in Corban Estate’s story, placing the site as a significant hub in Aotearoa Opening that champions the art form in its various methods and mediums. This Fri 16 December sculptural tradition is driven by the renowned resident sculptors who 6 – 8pm are based at Corban Estate Arts Centre, part of a close community of creatives. David McCracken Julie Moselen Seven Sculptors presents a survey of works as part of the resident Kevin Osmond sculptor’s contemporary sculptural practices, developed in their onsite Anton Parsons studios. Though placed under the broader sculpture umbrella, each Martin Selman of their practices is both specialised and unique, exploring techniques Chris Van Doren ranging from metal fabrication to wood and stone carving, and those Steven Woodward employing industrial materials.

GALLERY PROGRAMMES 11 Huìyì – Hui: A Ceramic Painting Circle Join artist Cindy Huang for a ceramic painting workshop and a friendly discussion around themes explored in her practice inspired by her ongoing exhibition project, A Footnote on New Zealand History. Paying homage to the historic market gardens around Aotearoa that were sites where many Chinese and Māori relationships were cultivated, Cindy invites participants will choose a ceramic kumara or bok choy which they will paint. Our Arts Education for Schools programme, based on the NZ National Curriculum, supports inquiry and achievement objectives for all levels (Years 1 - 13). SCHOOLS EDUCATION 25 Nature Journaling and Book Construction Introduces classical and contemporary bookbinding techniques using a range of materials. Students will create observational drawings of the local natural environment using art processes such as watercolour, leaf rubbing and colour swatching. We will use all our senses to best document a plant, species or place and include empty pages for an ongoing project. The pages will be stitched, weaved, or tied together for students to each create their own unique book complete with a handmade cover. Starting with a short overview of Kahlo’s artistic practice and the Aotearoa New Zealand artists influenced by her work, the students will learn simple composition principles, colour-mixing and some basics of portrait painting using both paint and Caran d'Ache water colour pastels for finishing detail. $9.50YNE+ 17 October - 16 December +GST Weekdays 10am - 1pm per student Ceramic Studio: Garden Pot Creatures In this clay workshop students will use hand building techniques to design and shape their very own bowl or vessel. They will then decorate their bowl using inspiration from bugs and birds we might find in a garden environment – constructing these using a variety of decorative techniques including slip adhering, scratching and vibrant pigments. Pieces will be glazed and fired, making their vessels fully functional for everyday use. Your term curriculum topic can easily be integrated into this workshop upon request. 26 OCTOBER / NOVEMBER / DECEMBER Putiputi in Print A bright happy springtime print and collage workshop weighted in observation of the native flora of Aotearoa. Each student will create a print of details drawn from plants, utilising observational drawing skills and learning simple print making techniques. Based in the tradition of still life they will then combine the coloured prints into an observational still life collage of native flora. Fresh flowers and leafage in vases will be available on each table for close up observation. Each student will create a unique collage developing compositional skills and observational techniques and learning the arts of printmaking and collage. YNE+ 17 October - 16 December $9.50+GST Weekdays 10am - 1pm per student Shadowy Fun Story Theatre This is a workshop all about telling stories filled with theatre fun and play. Taking inspiration from NZ artists who use shadow techniques in their practice, students will explore the age-old technique of telling stories through shadow and light. Each student will develop their own set of character puppets and scenery ready to perform. Students will also each contribute a colourful flag to a class puppet theatre so that the fun can continue back at school. The workshop will include the space to experiment and play with their puppet creations projecting their images up onto the wall. Y1 - Y2 17 October - 16 December $9.50+GST Weekdays 10am - 1pm per student Stories of Light and Shadow In every good story there is both light and shadow. During CEAC.ORG.NZ this workshop students will discuss the basic elements of storytelling, thinking about how a picture can tell a story. Each student will design and create their own light box, in which they will be able to let their imaginations run free. The workshop will develop paper construction techniques and also include an introduction to the science behind how our eyes perceive perspective and distance through light and shadow.
