EXHIBITIONS 5Yukari Kahori Sweet Dreams (2018) Courtesy of the artist. Sweet Dreams Fri 13 April Yukari Kahori - Sun 27 May Opening Thu 12 April When Yukari Kaihori’s grandmother passed away in 2016, she left 6-8pm behind a book of handwritten poems featuring tanka and haiku (forms of Japanese short poetry). Surviving through WWII and a tough upbringing, these bittersweet poems explore a deep sense of longing. Beauty and sorrow co-exist in her grandmother’s poems, and Kaihori uses this relationship as a starting point for this project. Sweet Dreams explores the process of dreaming and encourages people to embrace when their dream worlds merge with reality.

SECTIONS 7Still There (Reflecting Room), Silo 6, Artweek, 2017 Held by Stars Darcell Apelu and Emily O’Hara Traditionally, the sighting of Matariki was greeted with expressions of grief for those who had died since its last appearance. Some said the stars housed their spirits. Others made small hāngī and believed when the oven was uncovered, the smells rose to strengthen the stars. The scope of this archive ranges from the political to personal, pertaining to Pacific, Māori, and LGBTQI communities. 8 APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2018 Each of our exhibitions in the Homestead Galleries is accompanied by free public programmes, providing different ways to engage with the ideas and artworks being presented. For families we have our monthly Saturday Gallery Club — fun and free art- making sessions for kids on the second Saturday of each month. Exploring a different topic and set of techniques each time, the activities are designed for children aged four years and over, and run for around 30 minutes. While their experiences may be confronting, audiences invariably come away uplifted and inspired by the openness and courage the young people display. Robert works with canvas, sculptures, murals and traditional aboriginal artefacts. He also works as an Indigenous Programme Coordinator in Melbourne, assisting his students to recognise their culture in the mainstream contemporary art world. 18 APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2018 Clay Explorations Kairava Gullatz This popular class offers the opportunity for enthusiastic partipants to experiment with a variety of modelling techniques under the guidance of the experienced well- known tutor Kairava Gullatz. Participants will discover their own individual way of handling clay, learn about surface decorations with slips and glazes and enjoy a social environment. 10kg of clay and the glazes and firings for this amount are included in the class fee.ALL LEVELS 6 weeks, Thu evenings $200 Thu 10 May – Thu 14 June 6pm - 9pm Includes most materials Layer Upon Layer Julie Moselen This weekend workshop will focus on creating prints using a layering process. ADULT CLASSES 19 Basics in Manual Photography Maddy Stockford This workshop is for those who want to learn to take photos in ‘Manual’ mode. Get to know the manual controls on your camera and learn how they control exposure, aperture and shutterspeed. Participants will spend time getting to know their camera both indoors and outside, exploring the picturesque Corban Estate site. Discussions will be about the important aspects of great images and how to get those into your own photos. A camera with a ‘manual’ setting is essential for this workshop. YOUTH WORKSHOPS 20 APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2018 CEAC.ORG.NZ Youth Arts Workshops are a great way for young people to explore and experiment with a range of different art forms. These holidays you can learn about painting and print making techniques or immerse yourself in music to produce and record songs. Come and challenge yourself creatively through one of our inspiring two day classes. Set at a low cost, with some fully sponsored places these workshops are a great way to spend your holidays. Then decorate with texture or colour to finish off your functional work of art! Finished pieces will be fired and food safe. 2 days $35 Mon 16 – Tue 17 April 10am - 3pm 13 - 18 YEARS Celebrating our Ancestors Sarah Ormsby In this two day workshop we will design and create our own series of painted watercolour panels which explore images of those who are special to us. In the Box Dave Atai and Friends A workshop, for young people who are wanting to gain a deeper understanding about song-writing. Learn how to write and arrange a song from scratch, identifying the different sections of the song and their practice. We will put it all together by writing and recording a song over the 2 days then participants will take away an MP3 file of the finished track. CHILDRENS CLASSES 22 APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2018 CEAC.ORG.NZ Holiday Classes Join us in exploring and experimenting with visual arts and creative fun these school holidays. Classes take place in an art studio setting with friendly experienced tutors and artists. The course fees include all materials, but remember… students need to wear old clothes and bring their lunch and a drink bottle. Term Classes Term classes are a chance to delve deeper into art techniques and creative mediums over a 6 week period. 28 APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2018 Hipporaffes Kairava Gullatz Invent an animal by merging two or three animals together, creating a unique never-before-seen creature. Creatures will be sculpted from soft clay as you learn techniques for clay creations. A pottery wheel awaits you to throw cups or bowls. CHILDRENS TERM CLASSES 29 Making Molecules: 3D Sculpture Rangimarie McDowell Art and science combine to create sculptural forms. Examine the ways you can transform a 2D image into a 3D object. We will explore the structure of molecules to inspire a body of work using the methods of sculpture to make wire organisms. We are all made up of cells and energy, the plants around us, the stars in the sky, the earth we live on, the humans we are; we are all a huge mass of cells and energy. Be inspired, share and enjoy this visual conversation around cosmology and the science of nature.10 - 14 YEARS 6 weeks, Tuesday afternoons $95 8 May – 12 June 4pm – 5.30pm It all starts here: Drawing Julie Moselen This class is designed to give children a broad understanding, knowledge and technique base in order for them to develop their drawing skills. Time will be spent studying light and shade, contrast, and rendering.
