Masi in my Blood Fri 15 February - Rowena Rooney Sun 7 April Masi in my Blood contains a show of contemporary artworks that Opening Thu 14 tell the story of how Masi and Masi designs were woven into the February 6-8pm practice of New Zealand born Fijian artist Rowena Rooney. Her personal connection with Masi, through passed-on tradition, culture and language can be seen in these recent pieces, with elements drawing from the artist’s Melanesian roots.

CEAC.ORG.NZThe Ulumate Project Fri 15 February -Daren Kamali and Inise Eremasi Sun 7 AprilUlumate or ‘Dead Head’ was the ancient practice of wig making by Opening Thu 14indigenous Fijians, over 200 years ago. Normally practised during February 6-8pmthe time of mourning, the drau-ni-ulu (hair) is cut and made intoa wig then worn until the hair beneath grows back. The UlumateProject has been 21 years in the making and this exhibition willfeature the research and journey the artists have taken.

Nakilamai Creations Fri 15 February - Railala Gade Sun 7 April As a young child on the island of Moce, artist Railala Gade was Opening Thu 14 brought up surrounded by the making of Masi (Fijian barkcloth). As February 6-8pm she grew older, making Masi became a way to earn a living for the artist and she would eventually learn to make and design beautiful pieces for herself using specific patterns from her island. This exhibition explores the unique patterns and knowledge specific to Moce island.

GALLERY ACTIVITIES 8 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 CEAC.ORG.NZ Each of our exhibitions in the Homestead Galleries is accompanied by free public programmes, providing different ways to engage with the ideas and artworks being presented. For families we have our monthly Saturday Gallery Club — fun and free art- making sessions for kids on the second Saturday of each month. Exploring a different topic and set of techniques each time, the activities are designed for children aged four years and over, and run for around 30 minutes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The last Saturday of every month we will be exploring our latest exhibitions with a free 1 hour drawing club for adults. So bring a friend to spend some time with, learning simple drawing and sketching techniques in a relaxed environment.

SUMMER SCHOOL 14 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 CEAC.ORG.NZ Summer School 2019 promises an exciting array of talented artists from all over Aotearoa and further afield offering their skills and experience in a range of mediums and techniques. The programme caters to serious creators as well as those wanting to reconnect with creativity and start the year with an inspiring and lasting experience. SUMMER SCHOOL 15 Solar Stories: An intro to Solar Plate Printmaking Prue MacDougall Solar Plate is a simple and safe approach to traditional etching. Light sensitive plate is exposed with UV light and developed with ordinary tap water. Offering fine detail and a wide tonal range using photographic imagery, hand drawn originals and the use of found material, this technique is easy to learn making it suitable for beginners as well as those with printmaking experience. 16 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 Place Particulars: Discoveries in Abstract Landscapes Tom Voyce, UK Explore the ‘sense of place’ using Corban Estate as the subject matter. This workshop pushes the boundary between abstract and figurative scenes so participants can decide the focus of their artworks. Working in water colour, acrylic or oils paints, participants will produce a series of paintings over the week, from initial drawings and colour notes to finished layered artworks.ALL LEVELS 5 days $400 Mon 14 – Fri 18 January 10am – 4.30pm Includes some materials The Lost Wax Process: An Intro to Glass Casting Christine Cathie This workshop is a basic introduction to the technique of lost wax kiln casting glass. Participants will make two simple forms by using various techniques to create their own unique works, then work through the processes of mould making, finishing the week with firing the works in the kiln at Christine’s studio in Te Atatu.ALL LEVELS 5 days $500 Mon 14 – Fri 18 January 10am – 4.30pm Includes most materials Waka Hoe: Introduction to Wood Carving Wikuki Kingi and Tania Wolfgramm This workshop will focus on the design, construction, CEAC.ORG.NZ and carving of traditional wooden paddles or Waka Hoe. Starting with an introduction to carving, participants work from initial design through to cutting, grinding and sanding to each create a uniquely adorned paddle. SUMMER SCHOOL 17 Shibori: Shaped Resist Dyeing Susanne Williamson Shibori originates in Japan and involves patterns created on fabrics using folding, stitching and pole wrapping. This workshop is an exploration of Shibori vat dyeing techniques using cotton dyes and the bleach back shadow technique. Participants will practice with fabric samples, culminating with making a scarf and apron. Suitable for all levels. 3 days $400 Mon 14 – Wed 16 January 10am – 4.30pm Includes most materials ALL LEVELS Drawing for the Figure Paul Woodruffe Explore a simple set of methods to enable the use of minimal lines to draw the human form in multiple poses, within perspectives, different genders and ages. We offer a range of mediums, contemporary arts practices and skill levels to cater for all abilities — whether you’re a beginner or looking to take your creativity in a new direction, experienced tutors will guide and inspire you to create in our supportive, studio environments. The 6 and 8 week term classes offer a deeper experience, allowing you to develop and build your skills alongside like-minded classmates. YOUTH WORKSHOPS 23 The Story of Pounamu Maha Tomo Discover the story of pounamu in this tikanga based contemporary Māori visual arts workshop. Construct and prepare a framed plywood board, then create stencils and experiment with colours to screen-print the story of pounamu onto your crafted wooden canvas. Please bring kai for shared lunch each day. 2 days $60 Mon 21 – Tue 22 January 13 - 18 YEARS 10am - 3pm Whale’s Tooth Bone Carving – Rei Niho Maha Tomo Create your own whale’s tooth out of bone in this tikanga based contemporary workshop. Learn how to write and arrange a song from scratch, identifying the different sections of the song and your practice. Classes take place in an art studio setting with friendly experienced tutors and artists. The course fees include all materials, but remember… students need to wear old clothes and bring their lunch and a drink bottle. Term Classes Term classes are a chance to delve deeper into art techniques and creative mediums over a 6 week period. Prepare to design, draw, cut and construct your own lightbox which contains imagery relating to the rich ecology of the Waitakere ranges; trees, birds, insects and fungi. Sharing stories about special characters from books as well as animals that appeared in our lives, you will learn how to shape the soft material of clay into the creature of your choice using a variety of modelling techniques. 28 JANUARY / FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019 Under the Sea Andrea Gerbic What do we find when we look at the ocean? Explore the huge variety of patterns, shapes, colours, textures and lines that make up the underwater world of the sea. Drawing inspiration from New Zealand artists Pat Hanly and Claudia Pond-Eyley we will create a mixed media collage and painting that reflects the special character of the plants, water and creatures living under the sea. 2 days $85 Thu 24 – Fri 25 January7 - 13 YEARS 10am – 2.30pm Painted Pizza Platters Kairava Gullatz Hands on soft clay! We will make a very special plate, decorating it with a colourful painting once we have shaped it. Everything will be fired and glazed to make all platters functional. 1 day $60 Fri 25 January 10am – 2.30pm4 - 9 YEARS Totally Tropical Prints Gabrielle Binks Print your own T-shirt in this tropical print extravaganza! Inspired by pop-art and nature, the workshop will explore the use of bold shapes and colours. Using tropical leaf shapes and stamps you will experiment on paper then print directly onto your t-shirt. CHILDREN’S TERM CLASSES 29 Drawing is Fun! Julie Moselen This class is designed to give children a broad understanding, knowledge and skill base in order for them to learn how to draw. Time will be spent studying light and shade, contrast, and rendering. A range of drawing styles will be covered which will include observational drawing, step by step guided drawing of animals and imaginative free drawing. 6 weeks, Mon afternoons $95 Mon 18 February – Mon 256 - 14 YEARS March 4pm – 5.30pm Eye-Popping Butterflies of NZ Jean Stewart Learn how to paint a butterfly with its shadow. First we will create our favourite New Zealand butterflies out of paper clay, then light these models and create an observational painting looking very closely at the shadows and the light. The end result will be a beautiful butterfly painting that appears to pop off the page. 6 weeks, Tue afternoons $95 Tue 19 February – Tue 266 - 12 YEARS March 4pm – 5.30pm Giant Squid Dessert Bowls Kairava Gullatz Anything unusual is good enough for our designs! You will make your very own special dessert bowls from soft white clay. The vessels can be adorned with 3D applications, carvings and colourful decorations. You will learn how to realise your creative ideas in clay following demonstrations for hand building techniques.
