Abstract Landscapes ALL LEVELS Sally Barron 5 days Take part in this 5 day exploratory oil painting workshop, creating Mon 13 – Fri 17 sketchbook content and building a body of work inspired by the January heritage architecture and natural landscape of Corban Estate Arts 10am – 4.30pm Centre. Participants will be taught about colour theory, colour mixing and painting techniques with an emphasis on experimentation and $400 individual development to suit all levels. All these learnings will then be combined to create a single abstract landscape masterpiece on Includes most canvas. materials Born in Whanganui and now living in Nelson, Sally studied in the UK where she lived for a number of years, attending Leeds University and The Royal College of Art in London. Sally works almost exclusively in oils with key themes exploring memory and our relationship with the environment, balancing figuration with the abstract. A documentary film frames your world and it is your story as much as it is the story of your contributors.ALL LEVELS CEAC.ORG.NZ Creative Documentary - Framing your World 5 days Paul Janman Mon 13 – Fri 17 January Over 5 days, filmmaker Paul Janman will be guiding participants 11am – 4.00pm through the fundamentals of making a creative short (2 min) documentary film and equipping them with the skills to tell their $375 own impactful audio-visual stories. From development of the story concept to the basic techniques of filming and editing (on any level of Includes most equipment from mobile to professional), participants will explore the materials surprising possibilities of factual filmmaking. With 2012 film, Tongan Ark, Paul Janman celebrated bicultural philosopher Futa Helu and the independent university he founded in Nuku’alofa. A sell out at the NZ Film Festival, the documentary’s global screenings included travels around the Pacific, often accompanied by live performances. Crash Course in Glass Casting ALL LEVELS Sofia Athineou 5 days Discover the captivating art of glass casting in this fun and intensive Mon 13 – Fri 17 5 day workshop. Working with wax, clay and a variety of other January materials, participants will gain an understanding of mould making 10am – 4.30pm and the lost wax method with the goal of creating a beautiful and unique piece of glasswork. Techniques to carefully de-mould and $500 polish castings will also be covered. All classes will take place at the Corban Estate site and firing will be done in Sofia’s kiln at her studio. Includes most materials Sofia Athineou is a mixed media artist of Greek origin who lives in the Waitakere Ranges. In glass, Sofia works predominantly with organic forms that show elemental forces like wind, fire and water, with movement depicted by the play of light inside the glass. Recently, her work has shifted in scale to larger size works and installations that bring awareness to different social issues which include sexual assault and the plight of refugees. She is a recipient of many awards and writing about her artwork has been extensively published. www.sofiaathineou.com

ALL LEVELS CEAC.ORG.NZ Etching Workshop 5 days Auckland Print Studio with Jan Philip Raath Mon 13 – Fri 17 January Learn about etching with specialist Jan Philip Raath of Auckland Print 10am – 4.30pm Studio. It would be entirely possible to create a finalised etching or a small edition of prints, but the focus of this workshop is to develop $400 methodologies and a strong skill set that will help participants to achieve consistent, repeatable results using the etching techniques Includes most of hard ground and aquatint. Participants will walk away with the materials necessary skills to produce an etching plate with standard line work and tonal areas, and the fundamentals to continue their studies in the rich art of etching and printmaking. Jan Philip Raath is a printmaker from South Africa. Raath has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree from the renowned Michaelis School of Fine Arts in Cape Town. After completing an apprenticeship at Warren Editions, he established his own print studio in Cape Town. Recently he moved to Auckland, New Zealand to join forces with esteemed artist John Pusateri at Auckland Print Studio where he continues to work with artists to produce projects in various printmaking media.
WORKSHOPS 6 Writing Creative Prose ALL LEVELS Paula Morris 5 days Take your writing to the next level with award-winning novelist Paula Mon 13 – Fri 17 Morris. Develop the skills you need to write stories, novels, personal January essays or memoirs – from point of view and narrative structure to 10am – 4.30pm character, setting and dialogue. This is a practical class for prose writers of all experience levels, and includes writing exercises, $375 seminars, close reading and workshops over a lively and intense week. Includes most materials Paula Morris (Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Whatua) is the author of the story collection Forbidden Cities(2008); the long-form essay On Coming Home(2015); and eight novels, including Rangatira(2011), winner of best work of fiction at both the 2012 New Zealand Post Book Awards and Ngā Kupu Ora Maori Book Awards. Amongst other numerous accolades, Paula was appointed an MZNM (Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit) in the 2019 New Year Honours, she currently holds the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship.

Courtesy of artist.Japanese Woodblock Printing Mokuhanga:ALL LEVELS CEAC.ORG.NZSustainable Printmaking Sybille Schlumbom 5 days Mon 13 – Fri 17 Based on the principles of Japanese woodblock carving and January printing (mokuhanga), this creative workshop will introduce the 10am – 4.30pm extensive possibilities of this low tech printing method. At the end of this 5 day workshop, participants will possess a vital toolkit of $400 printmaking techniques that can be easily built upon or added to their individualised art practice. While wood blocks will be provided Includes most to create printing, experienced tutor Sybille will teach the basics of materials creating your own wood blocks to be worked on beyond the class. Materials used will be sustainable (wood, paper and water colour). Originally from Germany, Sybille has lived in various parts of New Zealand with her family for the last 15 years. After years of teaching and working—mainly in painting, drawing, murals and installations—she started working in woodcut in 2015. She has studied Japanese woodcut with numerous renowned practitioners like Roslyn Kean in Australia, Eva Pietzcker in Germany, and Mi-Lab in Japan, with teachers such as Tuula Moilanen (Doctor of Arts) of Finland, and Chihiro Taki (Master of Arts), Michiko Hamada (Master of Fine Arts), and Ayao Shiokawa (Master of Fine Arts), all from Japan.

Introduction to Carving ALL LEVELS Wikuki Kingi and Tania Wolfgramm 4 days This workshop will focus on the design, construction, and carving of Mon 13 – Thur 16 traditional Waka Hoe or wooden paddles using both hand and power January tools. Starting with an introduction to carving, Wikuki will work with 10am – 4.30pm participants to create their own paddle and understand its use, form, and function. Traditional stories and chants will be shared to broaden $500 knowledge of waka, navigation, and paddles. Includes most Wikuki Kingi materials and guest As a Tohunga Whakairo/Master Carver, with over 40 years’ speakers experience, Wikuki has created many heritage taonga, including the intricately carved masterpiece Pou Kapūa, the tallest Māori/Pacific carving in the world. Wikuki has many relationships throughout NZ and the Pacific and continues to learn and build on his passion for Mana Whenua and indigenous community development, cultural resilience and robust futures, believing stronger identities make stronger people and families. Tania Wolfgramm A creative designer, strategist, voyager and storyteller, Tania (Maori/Tongan/Pacific) seeks to ignite and empower people to come together and collectively expand the horizons of the Maori, Pacific and Indigenous worlds. With deep cultural intelligence and wisdom, thought, word and action, Tania focuses on making the natural native world visible through Indigenous culture, art, science, and technology.

Corban Estate Arts Centre is home to artist studios, a café, art classes for adults and children, and an ever- changing programme of exhibitions and events.
