Gordon Bennett! – the story behind the exclamation! Gordon Bennett was the sponsor of many Motor, Motorcycle, Balloon, Flight and Ship/boat races in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The expression Gordon Bennett, relates to (in 1878) the 35 year old, all-round hell-raiser James Gordon Bennett Jr. Son of wealthy New York Herald’s Scottish owner (and Irish mother) – another...Gordon Bennett. It’s reputed that at a New Year party in 1878 at his fiancée Caroline May parent’s house, he turned up late, intoxicated and proceeded to urinate in a fireplace, (mistaking it for a toilet... apparently). This was in front of his hosts and other guests... and the expression ‘Gordon Bennett ’ was apparently born... it also put a hasty end to the forthcoming nuptials! The Guinness Book of World Records, bestowed the ‘Greatest Engagement Faux Pas’ on Gordon Bennett and considered the reason for the exclamation ‘Gordon Bennett’. Gordon eventually married for the first (and only time) at the ripe old age of 73! Midget Mk3,1500 MG Midget MkIII (1966–74). From 1966 the engine grew to 1275cc (from 1098cc) using the Mini-Cooper ‘S’ engine development. A detuned engine was used for reasons of model range placement. The Midget could have been faster than the more expensive MGB! Minor facelift changes were made to the body trim in late 1969 (1970 model year), with sills painted black, a revised recessed black grille, and squared off taillights (as on the MGB). The 13-inch Rubery Owen “Rostyle” wheels were standardized. In 1972 the square-shaped rear wheel arches became rounded between 1972-1974 and some consider the most desirable Midget. The 1500 engine and rubber bumpers were added in 1974 due to US safety legislation. The last Midget was produced on 7 December 1979. The last 500 UK home-market cars were painted black.
