Clash of Stances: Political and Diplomatic StabilityAs the committee began, the question arose; does political stability carry more importance than diplomaticstability among the nations of the world? Should a country focus on developing itself after being subjected to acatastrophic war or concentrate solely on helping the international community regain its power? The definitionof war crimes were vague to be said the least, and the real struggle was to find a middle ground at a crucial stage, asthe United Nations was set up a mere 4 years ago and this was deemed a test of its strength.Over the matter of superior orders and soldier’s accountability, the Vatican City clearly stated that when a manchooses to join the army as a soldier, his aim is to protect the innocent lives before saving his own. Furthermore, there was a clash of stances over the question of morals over order. The delegates examined the fine line betweencivilians and the military personnel. They discussed the relevance of soldiers being accessories to murder, execution and manslaughter. The delegate of Venezuela brought forth the lack of evidence of the orders given bythe superior authorities, which acts as an obstruction to justice. The ambiguity of the extent of the sentenceprovided was further discussed, which led to the delegate of Mongolia citing the importance of ranks in the armyand the judgement given must vary. The delegate of Germany further stated that low ranking soldiers are notcompletely innocent, yet should not be treated equally as guilty. As the committee progressed forward, the topic of experimentation with specific emphasis to concentrationcamps, was discussed. Germany came forth to boldly state it was the fault of the previous government led byAdolf Hitler but took responsibility of its future decisions and insisted that the doctors that conducted theexperiments were not fully responsible for their actions, further implying the role of superior authorities’ powerover its subordinates. Instances regarding the experiments included, changing the colours of the eyes’ iris, freezing a child to death and injecting them with viruses to find medical cures. The balance between beneficenceand nonmaleficence is vital in experimentation. But, the aim to help the people by making them healthier waseventually overlooked. On that account, though there are many facets to discuss and deliberate, to reach a united viewpoint on whatsignifies as a war crime, the Historic International Legal Committee is steadfast in reaching its goal.- Correspondent of Bild j3

The Hindu and Diário de NotíciasThe World Economic Forum, was agreeably the mostexciting committee of today’s conference. With a crisiswithin the first hour of committee and outlandish claimsbeing yelled out by individuals; being a reporter of theWEF was truly ‘winning the jackpot’.Globalization seemed to be an extremely pertinent topicof discussion for the delegates, since they were both, critizing and applauding globalization in their speeches. Both, Mr. Rupert Murdoch and Mr. Ri Yong Ho statedthat globalization was the primary cause of globalinequality. Mrs. Janet Yellen stated in her speech, thatwhile globalization, had to an extent, reduced inequalityglobally, it had increased unemployment within one’sown country.Pope Francis started his speech by citing the basiceconomic problem, i.e. excess demand with limitedsupply due to scarce economic resources. The original crisis was as follows: Saudi Arabia hasannounced that they are looking for privateshareholders in Saudi Aramco. There has beenspeculation that this is a measure to mitigate the effectsof the country’s social welfare programs. CNN hasbroken news that ExxonMobil had suffered an oil spill. While the company has played it off as a minor event, doubts persist over the effect on it's (ExxonMobil’s)share prices. Committee broke into a heated discussionalmost immediately, with Point of Orders thrownaround to the extent where the Director suspended themtemporarily. The French OrganisationDoctors Without Borders has sent a preliminary groupto investigate. The disease presents similar to thepatient’s face being burned off. The Oil leak has beenisolated to Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. The total amountspilled is 5 million US gallons. The representative ofReuters had much to say on the matter, releasing 2 pressleaks for the WEF. Binding or not binding? Editorial Board That is the real question. Miss Philu Rose Jose Sanjana N | Meghana V “There is a time to fight, and a time to be clever” – Pablo Escobar, Narcos (Netflix Original Serie) Design: Joy Vadakkan Antony With a friendly chair and noisy committee, The EDC (The Economic Drug Commission) started with a rather slow roll call and a seemingly extremely energetic group of delegates. With an introduction from the Chair, briefing of the agendas, rules of procedure and apparent lobbying right before Committee was about to even commence, The Director, along with his Assistant and Moderator set the air. The European Drug commission started off with an explosive debate as to how the committee proceeded, through a binding resolution or through a non binding one. This topic being highly controversial resulted in the committee immediately splitting into two main block and a third one, the latter being one that maintained a neutral stance and was being bombarded by delegates convincing them to take a stance in their favor. The delegates of the United Kingdom made a strong stance for binding the committee, they were supported by Sweden and Germany. This bloc was represented in the ‘1 for 1 against’ by Russia, who was very vague about his stance and wasn’t really able to make a strong enough speech or even express himself clearly. This lead to their block losing faith in their own stance. France made It clear that until and unless the committee is unbinding, they would not be able to pass motions fast enough due to extra procedural matters, and also stated that the opium trade in Afghanistan, a major issue for their committee couldn’t be taken up. Netherlands made a very strong point when they mentioned how whenever an unbinding resolution is passed, there aren’t enough implications resulting in no change whatsoever. The final vote ended with a sweeping victory for unbinding an eighteen for and eleven against ,was mainly due to a very strong and opinionated stance for the French block. Ergo, making the EDC’s Double Delegation committee a non-binding one. Post voting, Greece put forth the motion to start a General Speakers List, and with a GSL consisting of 6 countries all stating the obvious, each delegation recognized were given 90 seconds overall. The committee proceeded with explosive debate and an even more exhilarating crisis. The first ever simulation of the EDC set extremely high standards for posterity.
