COMMIX Withnail and I The first time I heard of Withnail and I that helps me get through the misery me. I have lost someone I thought I was when Edgar Wright was promoting that e ngulfs everyday life. would never lose, and vice versa. You The World’s End. He said that his movie But above all, the reason the movie has can spend the most precious moments was along the lines of Withnail and I, such a big impact on me is because of of your life with someone, thinking that and this made me curious, because the way in which it depicts a dying they will last forever, and yet, it is not to once I finished The World’s End (my favourite Cornetto in the trilogy), I found friendship. It is inevitable that we slowly be. I find this to be poetically it to be a singular movie, and didn’t start to drift away from the very same tragic (or tragically poetic). I think that another movie could be people we share our dinner table with, could relate to the pangs of similar to it in any way possible. So, in and the movie beautifully captures this. jealousy that engulfs order to satiate my curiosity, I ended up No matter how much I have tried, there Withnail when his friend is watching Withnail and I. It blew me have been friendships that have ended selected for the lead role, away like no o ther m ovie h as. because I drifted away from that and at the same time, I person, or that person drifted away from could relate to what “I” goes I have never had a sip of alcohol in my through, of having outgrown life, I have never stepped foot onstage, I his friendship and setting out have never been unemployed, and yet I on his own. I am Withnail, found the movie to be extremely and I a m “I”. relatable, the struggles of Withnail and Marwood to be extremely relatable. The While it is a comedic movie depicts loneliness even when you are surrounded by people, the masterpiece, I don’t think struggles of an artist in pursue of his one true love, the ability to find humour any other piece of art has in the most dire situation, and the eternal search for happiness when moved me as much as surrounded by gloom. These are some of the themes that hold true for me to Withnail and I. The climatic this day. While I am no artist, I do find Withnail’s inability to make soliloquy, taken from compromises in order to achieve his goal extremely relevant to me. And the Hamlet, performed dark humour in the movie is something magnificently by Richard E. Grant perfectly captures what mankind is capable of, and yet what mankind eventually achieves. I am yet to be impacted as deeply by anything as I was by this scene in particular and this movie in general, and for this, I say to thee, Mr. Robinson, “Chin-chin”. -Srisudhan R Editorial T eamApeksha S | Devyani M adaik | Mriganko Basu | Serene Z achariah | S risudhan R | Varsha N arayanan 4
