ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA STUDIES After the entrance of the Department of Media Studies in 1991, nothing was the same at CHRIST. Since then, the department has been the torchbearer of imparting distinguished media education to the students. The Department of Media Studies is where the pen is mightier than the sword, where the camera is more than just an acquaintance, where vision becomes reality and where teachers become family. Whether it’s creating a conducive learning environment or conducting the most happening events on campus, the department has always been at the top of its game, creating the leaders of tomorrow. ABOUT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY Florida State University preserves, expands, and disseminates knowledge in the sciences, technology, arts, humanities, and professions, while embracing a philosophy of learning strongly rooted in the traditions of the liberal arts and critical thinking. CONCEPT NOTE Crisis, pandemic, community spread, and its bearing on people and societies have been topics of discussion over the past one and half years. “Access to information in the time of crisis” was announced as the theme of the 2020 edition of IDUAI (International Day for Universal Access to Information) by UNESCO, and the event focused on the right to access information with a slogan “Access to information-saving lives, Building Trust, Bringing Hope. It emphasised the vital role of access to information in saving lives and moderating the impact of crises such as the current pandemic. Access to truthful and appropriate information is the greatest priority now, and the role of the media, the fourth pillar of democracy, forms a substantial part of it. While there is no doubt about the timeliness with which messages are disseminated through the media, there is always a question regarding the accuracy and authenticity of the news related to many factors, especially in social media. According to eMarketer, India has more WhatsApp users than any other country, with 390.1 million monthly active users and 448 million active social media users. So, the magnitude of implications due to the spread of misinformation, disinformation and mal- information in social media can be understood. @ .mediameet christuniversity in Media Meet 2021 | 2

This is true especially in terms of the Covid-19 crisis - lack of information clarity in presenting numbers in the articles and particularly spreading misinformation regarding the availability of beds and oxygen facilities in hospitals, mortality rate and livelihood needs of the poor people during lockdowns, etc. have led us to be sceptical about the authenticity of media reportage. Hence, by assigning a central role to the nature and scope of both traditional and social media, the conference intends to receive proposals that focus on the possible ways in which these parameters of different media could be analysed and how the shortcomings (if any), could be rectified. While the multi pronged crises posed by the pandemic made the importance of media evident for all sections of the society, they also resulted in the media being put to scrutiny like never before. At the same time, almost every section of media - film, television, advertising, music, gaming, print and digital - were faced with their own challenges and they came up with their own solutions. Not all solutions were equally considerate of the media workers though. While the streaming media experienced a staggering rise in consumption, user base and profits, news workers were faced with lay-offs, furloughs and cutbacks. Media Meet 2021 attempts to bring together the stakeholders including those from the media industry and the academia to comprehend the breadth of the repercussions and to conceive ideas that could make the media industries more resilient. @ .mediameet christuniversity in Media Meet 2021 | 2
