March 2016I am passionate about teaching and my role in student learning. I set high and clear standards for my studentsthat are consistent with the state learning standards. I am an open and flexible teacher who continually adjustsclassroom activities to reflect the diversity of students’ skill levels, needs and learning styles. A personal strengthof mine is the ability to see situations from multiple perspectives and to be able to incorporate these into solutions. For the past five years, I have taught both enrichment and academic courses for the school-home partnershipwith Deer Park Schools. I taught students at all ages from kindergarten through high school in this alternativelearning environment. Previous to this, I was a teacher for a wealthy private family teaching preschool throughthe fifth grade. In addition, I have several tutor clients ranging from lower elementary age to middle school mathstudents.I encourage student learning by incorporating creative learning experiences, various forms of technology, handson activities, and engaging manipulatives. In all settings, I strive to create a learning environment which promotesa joy of learning for my students. These experiences have enabled me to gain excellent practical instructionaldesign experiences that can be applied to create a positive learning environment in any classroom setting. As my resume indicates, education in some sort or another has always been part of my professional life. Forfifteen years, I developed, coordinated, advised and implemented a wide variety of social, education, recreational, and co-curricular activities at the university level. While at Weber State University, I had many professionalopportunities which included teaching a university general education course, creating and managing volunteerprograms, and advising many other types of campus events and activities. I also assisted in the development ofan assessment plan to measure student learning outcomes. One of my greatest strengths as a teacher is my motivational skills and encouraging ways. I provide frequent, positive, early feedback which supports a student’s beliefs that they can do well. Through involvement in activelearning, students experience learning which is purposeful and worthwhile. Introducing real life experiences intothe classroom allows students to understand how academics are intertwined in every aspect of society.Throughout my professional life and my teaching experiences, I have demonstrated my commitment to fosteringthe student’s academic, social, and personal growth as well as my willingness and ability to work collaborativelywith others. I would welcome the opportunity to create and promote a successful learning experience for yourstudents.I look forward to sharing my zest and dedication along with my educational and professional experiences withyou. GONZAGA UNIVERSITY Department of Teacher EducationSeptember 2003To whom it may concernI have had the pleasure of knowing Christine Colestock for the past three years. She was a student in my MITelementary social studies methods course and I followed her student teaching with interest.Christine is, without doubt, one of the finest students I have ever had. She sets very high standards for herselfboth academically and professionally. Academically, Christine loves to learn. She is open to new ideas, solidifies her own ideas, enjoys the theoretical aspects of knowledge and then goes into the schools and practiceswhat she has learned. Christine's written and oral presentations were superb. She speaks well and comes acrossas a humorous and caring teacher. In class she was always there to support her peers. She is well respected byall who know her. In her classroom, Christine is creative and draws on a wide variety of teaching strategies. Sheis exceptionally talented in the fields of history, reading and technology. I have seen some of her lesson plansand I am most impressed. She loves her students and they in turn love her. She is concerned about individualstudents and reaches out to them in a special way so that they will fulfill their potential. Christine is a naturalteacher who does not have any problem with \"classroom management\" as she is able to incorporate that into theact of teaching.Christine has become an expert in \"Understanding by Design.\" She studied this philosophy as the major part ofher MIT thesis. Her thesis is worth reading as it is of the highest academic standard with a very clear practicalcomponent.I would like Christine to teach my children. They would be well cared for, they would be challenged and theywould learn. I have no hesitation, what so ever, in recommending Christine for a teaching position. Our schoolsneed the caliber of teacher that Christine is and our students need her even more.Sincerely,Dr. J. Nelson SPOKANE, WASHINGTON 99258-0025 (509) 323-3514
June 30, 2003As K. Christine Colestock's master teacher, I am writing to recommend her for your teaching openings.During the fall of 2002 she completed a 30 + hour field experience in my 2/3 combination classroom.Since this past January, she continued her involvement in our classroom as a student teacher.Stevens Elementary is located in Spokane W A and has an 80% free and reduced population. She is effectivein working with all students. She has constantly demonstrated the ability to differentiate her instruction and istireless in her pursuit to create engaging lesson plans. Some of the creative lessons she taught ranged from agreat American woman research project to poetry writing, from geometry to plant growth. She produced aclass web page that featured language arts and math activities that she also created. All her lessons were basedon the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements as well as the district’s learning targets.Christine is very reflective in her teaching. She likes to know the philosophy behind the practices and has takenthe initiative to read several books on her own time. Throughout her student teaching experience she made everyeffort to implement best practices in the classroom. She has participated in all staff meetings and several after school programs. Her enthusiasm and professionalismenabled her to create a network of other staff members ranging from the custodians, the cafeteria workers, teachers and parents. Her classroom management has improved a great deal throughout the weeks. She has discovered first hand thereasons behind the discipline process. She has had to deal with situations in the classroom that, even after 4years of teaching, I have not had to deal with. During such difficult times she was always poised andprofessional. The experience I have had with Christine leads me to believe that she will be an asset to any school. If I cananswer any further questions about Christine and her teaching abilities, please feel free to contact me at (509)456-8914.Sincerely,Patty BaerTeacher
